Doujin Artist: Damn it!
Skirt-Flipping Maniac: Sis Mochou, groundless accusations like that really wound my tender young heart.
Lazy Kitten: Immature? I don’t think I’m immature at all. I’m just an adorable little kitten, how could I possibly be mature?
Machete Girl: A d-degenerate veteran of love, you say…
Katsura Kotonoha felt genuinely wronged. She truly didn’t consider herself any veteran of love. When it came to understanding matters between men and women, she was even worse at it than her little sister, Kotonoha Katsura.
Though if the topic was innocence, then yes, this Sis Mochou, raised in the ancient world, really was more innocent than girls like them, who lived in the modern world and had been bombarded with explosive information from an early age.
“What? The final Demon God is in the Holy See?” Just as she was thinking this, Janet beside her suddenly cried out in alarm. “How is that possible? Old Andrew doesn’t even know what a Demon God is!”
“I don’t know who this Andrew of yours is, but I can say with certainty that Bael’s true body is in the Holy See’s headquarters in the Vatican,” Lilith said flatly.
“Andrew is Janet’s direct superior, one of the four cardinal archbishops,” Katsura Kotonoha explained in a low voice.
The three of them were already aboard a plane bound for New York. Somewhere over the clouds, Lilith had dropped the bombshell that the final Demon God lay within the Holy See itself.
Janet’s disbelief was only natural, that was the organization she had sworn herself to.
And the Holy See of today, whatever filth and darkness it harbored, was in general genuinely fighting on the front line of humanity’s survival. Even Andrew the cardinal archbishop had once bled on the front lines of battle.
He was like a grandfather to Janet, and had always been good to her. She refused to believe he would hide the matter of the “Demon God” from her.
“It seems your understanding of the Holy See is rather shallow.” Lilith understood now, and sighed. “The cardinal archbishops do appear to be the highest tier beneath the Pope, but between them and him stands the Oversight Bureau.”
“The, the what?” Janet had clearly never heard the title.
“The Holy See’s Oversight Bureau is the Pope’s own personal punitive force.” Lilith’s gaze drifted out the window, over the sea of clouds stacking away into the distance. “Every one of its members is a fusion of human and horror. Their first duty is to purge all unstable elements within the Holy See.”
A fusion of human and horror?
Janet and Katsura Kotonoha stared in open astonishment.
What is a “horror”?
It was a monster that could never be tamed or reasoned with, its heart filled with nothing but hatred for the living. How could such a thing possibly be fused with a human? At its root, it was simply impossible!
“True. By any normal standard, it’s impossible.” As if reading their thoughts, Lilith gave a slight nod. “But with Bael’s power, it can be done. Among the Walkers Among Men, he is the one who embodies reconstruction and creation.”
“Two laws?” Katsura Kotonoha’s eyes narrowed.
Walkers Among Men, the Demon Gods, ordinarily possessed only a single ability each. But this Bael had two? Good lord, he was the “Father’s” favorite, wasn’t he?
Sure enough, Lilith’s answer confirmed her suspicion. “Bael is the eldest among us, and the strongest as well. Five hundred years ago, Saint Peter summoned him back to the Holy See with a blood sacrifice of nine hundred ninety-nine people and a soul-locking array.”
“Saint Peter?” Janet’s jaw hung open, her face a study in disbelief. “Saint Peter of the Gospel of John? The radiant saint, the apostle of heaven? This man, used a blood sacrifice to bring a Demon God back to the Holy See?”
“Mm, the very same.” Lilith nodded firmly. “And the Bael who was brought back to the Holy See was given a new name: the Blood of Jesus.”
“The Blood of Jesus?! It’s the Blood of Jesus?!” Janet drew a deep breath, and understanding dawned. “So that’s it. I see it now!”
Janet had heard the title “Blood of Jesus” before, back when she was still very young.
In those days, a girl named Fiona at their orphanage had vanished without a trace, stirring up no small uproar.
The guilt-stricken director had spared no effort searching for her, only to be told by two members of the Inquisition that Fiona had been “chosen by the Blood of Jesus” and made a Keeper of the Way.
Janet still remembered how the director had looked when he heard the news, struck by lightning, aged a dozen years in a moment. Never again did his face wear its old smile, and within a few years he passed away from illness.
Later, once she had grown, Janet had probed her colleagues with artful little questions about the “Blood of Jesus,” but the answer was always the same: they had never heard of any such thing.
Back then she had believed she’d understood the truth: Fiona was dead, and the Inquisition pair’s story to the director was a cover for the church’s crimes against children.
Only now did she understand. The “Blood of Jesus” was real. It was a Demon God. And that Fiona had likely already fused with a horror, becoming a member of the Oversight Bureau.
And thinking back on the director’s demeanor that day, he must have known exactly what the “Blood of Jesus” was, which was why he’d looked so utterly shattered. And a human fused with a horror probably carried dreadful side effects besides.
The Holy See. Hah!
“Janet, are you all right?” Seeing her friend’s face suddenly turn grim, Katsura Kotonoha asked with real concern.
“I’m fine. Just remembering some old things.” Janet let out a breath, then turned. “Promise me, Koto. You must destroy that Demon God in the Holy See!”
Katsura Kotonoha paused, seeming to grasp the depth of her friend’s resolve, and her own expression turned grave. “All right. I promise you.”
Even without Janet’s plea, she had already meant to destroy that “Bael.” But Janet’s expression and her words stirred something in Katsura Kotonoha.
So her dear friend had been royally fooled by the Holy See’s brainwashing specialists. How pitiable. I simply must post this in the group for everyone to have a good laugh… no, no, to sympathize. Sympathy is called for.
Skirt-Flipping Maniac: Kotonoha-chan, what you’re actually thinking is “good laugh,” isn’t it? It’s absolutely “good laugh,” isn’t it?
Machete Girl: How could it be! Miss Janet is my dear friend!
Doujin Artist: And it’s precisely because she’s your dear friend that she’s such good material for a laugh, no? I see right through you, black-hearted girl!
Machete Girl: I most certainly was not! Don’t go making things up!
Scarlet Lotus Fairy: Heh heh. Whether you were or not, you know in your own heart! Wait, hold on. You people still haven’t answered my earlier question. This bargain-bin sister of yours is waiting, hello!
