Eh?
Wang Yuyan froze, pointing at her own nose. “Me?”
“Yes, precisely you.” Li Mochou’s answer left no room for doubt.
“I can’t! I don’t know martial arts!” Wang Yuyan shook her head firmly, waving both hands.
She had read plenty of martial arts manuals, true, but she had never trained a day in her life. She was, quite literally, too weak to truss a chicken, while Old Monster of the Xingxiu Constellation Ding Chunqiu was a first-rate master of the rivers and lakes. The gap was enormous.
“Not knowing martial arts can be fixed.” Li Mochou’s face was placid, her tone unhurried. “Your aptitude and constitution are excellent. You should reach the Xiantian realm within half a year.”
“Mochou, what nonsense are you spouting?” The corner of Li Qingluo’s mouth twitched, black lines crowding her forehead.
As Li Qiushui’s daughter, steeped in the martial arts from her earliest days, she had no taste for training herself, but her discernment was far from ordinary.
She knew perfectly well what the Xiantian realm meant: a supreme expert who had opened the Ren and Du meridians and bridged heaven and earth within. Her own father, Wu Yazi, and mother, Li Qiushui, were both Xiantian-realm masters.
But according to her parents, going from first lessons to Xiantian had cost them at least twenty years. Li Qingluo knew exactly what her daughter was made of: a photographic memory and rare comprehension, yes, but the girl had long since passed the prime age for training.
Even if she threw herself into it starting today, reaching Xiantian would take eight or ten years at minimum. Half a year? Impossible!
“Whether it’s nonsense, you may see for yourself soon enough.” Li Mochou’s face brimmed with confidence, her gaze shifting to Wang Yuyan. “But first, we must consider the wishes of the one concerned.”
“I… I don’t know…” Wang Yuyan’s expression wavered.
In her heart of hearts, she had no wish to learn martial arts, otherwise she’d have set down that path long ago, as a child. But if she truly could reach the Xiantian realm, she could surely aid her cousin far better. That thought left her deeply torn.
“My decision. This matter is settled.” Li Qingluo drew a breath. “You will train with all diligence, and until you reach Xiantian, you will not go see that boy of the Murong family.”
Eh?!
Wang Yuyan’s eyes went round, her face a portrait of disbelief. “Mother, how can you!”
“How can I not!” Li Qingluo’s face was cold and stern as she said flatly, “That boy was never a good man to begin with.”
As Li Qingluo saw it, whether her daughter ever reached the Xiantian realm hardly mattered, so long as she never saw Murong Fu again. She had been down that road, and she knew full well that boy was no fit match.
“That’s not true! Cousin treats me very well!” Wang Yuyan, summoning her courage, argued her case with all the reason she could muster.
On other matters she might never dare defy her imperious mother. But the moment Murong Fu was involved, she hardened in an instant.
“You…” Li Qingluo’s palm slammed the table as she shot to her feet.
“Do not be angry.” Li Mochou shook her head and gave her sleeve a gentle tug. “In matters of the heart, guidance beats damming the river. It was true of you back then, was it not?”
“Mochou!” At those words, Li Qingluo’s whole face flushed violet. Things like that are between the two of us, how could you say it in front of the child?! If she ever found out, how would her mother ever show her face again?
Mother, back then… what?
Wang Yuyan froze, staring at her mother’s suddenly contorted face, quite bewildered. Mother and daughter had rarely if ever opened their hearts to each other, so Wang Yuyan had no idea that her mother had been even more rebellious than she was, pregnant out of wedlock, no less.
“Though your mother’s words were harsh, and she gave no thought to your own wishes,” Li Mochou said, turning to Wang Yuyan with a smile, “she does have your interests at heart. That much is true. Matters of love are far too early for you.”
“I…”
Before Wang Yuyan could finish, Li Mochou cut in: “Of course, I don’t intend to block you the way your mother does. I only need you to be clear about one thing: whether Murong Fu is truly worth your love. Once you have your answer, if you still adore that Murong Fu, I will speak to your mother on your behalf and see you both united.”
“Really?” Wang Yuyan instantly lit up with excitement, glancing gingerly toward her mother. Li Qingluo’s face was grim and she said not a word, but she seemed to have silently acquiesced. “Thank you, little auntie!”
“No need for thanks.” Li Mochou smiled and waved a hand. “But for these six months, you will follow my arrangements. Train diligently. No slacking.”
“All right!” Wang Yuyan nodded with great resolve.
For the sake of a beautiful future at her cousin’s side, a mere half year was nothing at all. Her mind was made up: she would give her little auntie an absolutely flawless performance.
“Off you go.” Li Mochou winked at her. “Rest well today. Tomorrow, the suffering begins.”
“I’m not afraid!” Wang Yuyan gave her little fists a squeeze and skipped out of the room, turning at the door.
Only after the girl’s figure had wholly vanished did Li Qingluo let out a long breath. Gazing at her sister, she said, “That Murong Fu… he isn’t right for our Yan-er.”
“Mm, I know.” By now Li Mochou had reined in her smile and risen to her feet. “Come. It’s been a long time since I saw the scenery of Lake Tai.”
Is this really the moment for sightseeing?
Li Qingluo ached to ask her sister exactly that, but in the end she trailed along behind Li Mochou like a timid young bride. There was nothing for it, since childhood, she had never once been able to manage this little sister of hers.
Out of the room, Li Mochou strolled at an unhurried pace toward Lake Tai, the very picture of a woman with everything in hand. In reality she was already composing a message and sending it into the group for help: Question, how do I get a teenage girl to swear off puppy love?
Lin Fengjiao: Simple. Break her legs.
Skirt-Flipping Maniac: Pfft! Devil Uncle Nine! It’s only puppy love, how could you break her legs over that?
Soul Society’s Villain: Mm. Legs alone won’t suffice. Both arms should go as well. That way she couldn’t go looking for the man even if she wanted to.
Doujin Artist: Hsss, terrifying! Ruiko-chan, you’d best watch out.
Skirt-Flipping Maniac: ?
Doujin Artist: Asking a question you already know the answer to, hm? You count as puppy love too.
Skirt-Flipping Maniac: LOL! I’ve got the X-Factor, broken arms and legs don’t scare me!
Machete Girl: Nice one. Truly worthy of you, Ruiko-chan.
Scarlet Lotus Fairy: Speaking plainly, I don’t think what you two have even counts as puppy love. And Wang Yuyan isn’t a degenerate veteran of love like you lot, her mental age is more mature than mine.
