Kael rushes to save Riley from an attack but is intercepted by Rhazira. Kael pushes himself beyond his limits, causing himself immense pain and damage, to reach Riley. However, Rhazira attacks Riley, and just as Kael lets out a desperate roar, Riley succumbs to his injuries. As Kael continues to fight Rhazira, Riley's blood begins to form runes and levitate, revealing a strange transformation.

For several seconds, Rhazira could only stare.

No.

This wasn’t right.

Whatever desperate explanation she’d been clinging to immediately began falling apart as she took in the damage spreading across her beloved.

"My love, this restoration... isn’t this too—"

The violent snap cut her off.

Rhazira flinched.

Then another section gave way.

And another.

What had started as a thin break along the ancient shell rapidly worsened until entire sections of its hardened surface began splintering outward.

Pieces actually broke free.

Fragments of the Primordial Dragon’s body struck the ground one after another, scattering across the chamber as Rhazira’s expression finally twisted from disbelief into outright horror.

"No."

Her voice came out as barely more than a horrified murmur.

Another fragment splintered off.

"No, no, no, no..."

More cracks spread.

"NOOOOO!"

The Wyvern Queen’s voice finally broke into a full-on, distressed scream.

Her hands twitched uncontrollably before reaching toward the massive figure, fingers clawing desperately at the distance between them as though she could somehow hold everything together from where she stood.

She even made frantic, almost caressing motions in his direction, trembling fingers grasping at nothing but thin air while more pieces continued splintering away from the body she’d spent so long trying to restore.

Then another violent crack thundered through the chamber.

The entire cavern shuddered with it.

Stone groaned under the strain as dust and loose debris rained from the ceiling, the surrounding walls trembling as though the damage tearing through the Primordial Dragon’s body was somehow being inflicted upon Wyrmfall itself.

Yet right in the middle of it all, that anomaly was still floating in mid-air, surrounded by blood runes that continued revolving around his body in ways Rhazira neither understood nor appreciated.

Something inside her finally snapped.

Whatever desperate hope she’d been clinging to disappeared as the Wyvern Queen lunged across the distance toward her mate.

"Khan!"

Her voice came out as a raw, hysterical shriek.

"Do something!"

Rhazira immediately rushed toward her beloved.

At that point, nothing else mattered. Not the golden dragon she’d been fighting moments ago, not the blood still dripping from her injuries, and certainly not whatever was happening to Riley Hale.

All she needed to do was reach her mate.

And she was almost there. Almost.

Her eyes remained fixed on the colossal figure ahead, so completely consumed by the growing fractures spreading across his body that she never noticed the presence that had closed in behind her.

Not until something seized the back of her head.

"?!"

Rhazira didn’t even have time to turn.

One moment, her beloved was directly ahead of her.

The next, her entire field of vision violently flipped as an overwhelming force dragged her backward before slamming her face straight into the ground.

Stone exploded beneath her face as the entire chamber once again shook from the impact, cracks tearing outward while dust and debris burst into the air.

And standing over her was a golden dragon who, by that point, no longer had anything resembling sanity left in his eyes.

Kael had caught up to her.

Blood was still streaming from his ears and nose, and now even more noticeably from his wounded shoulder, but somewhere along the way, he’d completely stopped caring about what his body could withstand. He’d pushed himself even further beyond his limits, surrendering more and more of himself in exchange for greater power as he trusted nothing but the instincts screaming at him to reach his mate.

Rhazira snarled and violently wrenched herself out of the deranged Dragon Lord’s grasp, releasing enough mana to blast him away.

How ironic.

Just moments ago, she’d been the one trying to keep Kael away from that Hale brat.

Now the tables had completely turned, and the maddened golden dragon was unconsciously doing everything in his power to prevent from getting anywhere near him.

But it was fine.

If Kael Dravaryn insisted on being difficult, then Rhazira would simply take out that anomaly herself.

There had been a time when she’d been almost obsessed with figuring out what was so unique about Riley Hale. She’d wanted to understand what exactly made him different and why so many inexplicable things seemed to revolve around him.

But whatever he was, one thing had become painfully clear.

He wasn’t good for her King.

So it would be better to eliminate him right now.

Rhazira regained her footing and immediately rushed toward her beloved.

Only this time, instead of being hampered by Kael or the overwhelming dragon fear radiating from the Primordial Dragon’s body, what she collided with was something else entirely.

A solid barrier.

"!"

Pain exploded through Rhazira’s body.

She hadn’t braced herself in the slightest, having never expected a barrier to suddenly appear inside the very place she’d guarded for most of her life. The impact was so brutal that it felt as though the bones along the front of her body had crumpled all at once.

But the pain barely registered before another massive crack echoed through the chamber.

Rhazira’s head snapped upward.

Her face immediately paled.

The colossal body of her beloved was changing.

Its color was fading before her eyes, that once-powerful form rapidly turning ashen as more fractures continued spreading across its surface.

"KHAAAN!"

Rhazira slammed both hands against the barrier.

"I can’t get to you right now! You need to finish him! It’s that one!" she screamed, frantically pounding against whatever was keeping her away. "If you just get rid of him, the pain will stop! It’ll all stop, I swear!"

Then, much to the Wyvern Queen’s momentary hope, the massive figure finally moved.

Barely.

A strained groan came from the Wyvern King, as though even the smallest motion had suddenly become incredibly difficult.

But he still spoke.

"Rhazira..."

She immediately stopped pounding against the barrier.

"...You can stop now."

Rhazira stared.

For a moment, she genuinely seemed incapable of understanding the words she’d just heard.

"What?"

Her hands slowly slid against the barrier.

"Khan, what are you saying?!"

Her body began trembling violently, almost as though some part of her already understood what her mind was desperately refusing to accept.

"My love, just one strike! I know it must really be painful, but—"

"There are... worse pains than this."

Rhazira suddenly felt faint.

The Wyvern King sounded impossibly weary when he continued, "We’ve overstayed for far too long now."

"No."

Her head immediately shook.

"No! You can’t possibly be saying that now! Not now when we’re right here already!"

Her voice rose with every word as she pressed herself harder against the barrier.

"Just a few more steps and—"

But before either of them could say anything else, movement from the center of the chamber caught Rhazira’s attention.

Riley was changing.

Still suspended in mid-air and surrounded by streams of revolving blood, the unconscious man slowly shifted positions.

His body curled inward.

His limbs folded close to himself until he almost resembled someone sleeping, and then something massive began emerging from his back.

Black wings.

Rhazira gawked.

For several seconds, she simply stared at the enormous wings continuing to unfurl behind Riley.

Then, completely out of nowhere, she started laughing.

The sound came out so crazed that another spurt of blood flew from her mouth, but Rhazira didn’t seem to notice.

Sure enough.

A dragon!

She’d been right all along!

That anomaly really was a dragon, and if that was the case, then everything should’ve been perfect.

So why?

Why was everything going so horribly wrong?

"No..."

Rhazira’s laughter gradually softened into an unstable murmur.

"No, you’re mistaken. You’re just confused."

Her bloody fingers dragged almost soothingly across the barrier.

"Right. Always confused, you silly goose."

A strange, affectionate smile appeared on her face despite the tears gathering in her eyes.

"But don’t worry. I’ll take care of it. I’ll always take care of it."

The Wyvern King released another strained groan as more cracks slowly spread across his deteriorating body.

He wanted to dissuade her.

After all, he knew the woman before him well enough to understand that she would never accept reality easily. But now that things had already progressed this far, it was only a matter of time.

Only, the Wyvern King seemed to have forgotten something that Rhazira, once a draconic halfling herself, still remembered very well.

It was fine if she couldn’t get to that shifting dragon.

It was fine if her beloved was simply too confused to understand what needed to be done.

Because everything could still be fixed as long as she got rid of the golden dragon.

After all, if that anomaly truly was what Rhazira now suspected him to be, then she could only thank the heavens for the fated bond connecting him to Kael Dravaryn.

The Wyvern Queen went completely still.

Then she slowly turned around.

Whatever remained of her sanity disappeared along with the last trace of emotion on her face.

And much to the Wyvern King’s surprise, her eyes immediately locked onto the unconscious golden dragon whose body was partially lodged in the cavern wall where he’d landed.

Then she lunged.
