Ah, how they all would’ve loved for that much wishful thinking to actually come true!
Regrettably for one intensely in-demand group, however, they barely had any time to enjoy any semblance of peace when even a single night’s rest already felt like something they’d borrowed and would eventually have to pay back with interest.
Not even counting everyone who now had some serious thinking, planning, and probably praying to do after realizing they needed miracles on top of several extremely expensive overhauls, there were plenty of people who’d spent the night occupied with surveillance, security, research, and everything else that couldn’t simply be shoved aside until morning.
Then again, there were also those who’d genuinely wanted to stay up but simply couldn’t.
One Oliver Mylor, for example, would like to argue that he’d barely even blinked before the rest and recreation he’d fought so hard to obtain disappeared right before his eyes.
Prior to any part of his body coming into contact with a bed, the newly licensed mechanic had made several very passionate declarations about all the things he intended to do now that he was officially a free man with a career secured ahead of him.
He’d even proudly informed his husband to prepare himself for a lawless night.
Unfortunately, the moment his dedicated human stroller managed to carry him into their shared room, the supposed menace to society was already knocked out cold.
So much for a night of debauchery!
And naturally, Ollie made sure to complain about this great injustice to his good brother the next morning.
"My free time just poofed away!"
The blonde looked genuinely aggrieved as he lamented the loss, treating it like the greatest tragedy he’d experienced since discovering that square pizzas had apparently existed for years and he’d simply learned about them far too late.
Luca, who’d been walking beside him toward breakfast, listened sympathetically as his good brother continued mourning everything he’d apparently planned to accomplish during those precious unconscious hours.
It was only after another round of complaints that Ollie finally noticed something different.
Or rather, something missing.
"Hey, where’re your glasses?"
Luca stopped.
The blonde glanced at his face again before casually asking, "Did you forget them?"
"!"
To Ollie’s surprise, his saintly brother practically flinched as though he’d just been caught red-handed doing something extremely suspicious.
"No! But I swear I hid it well!"
"?"
Several people who’d already been seated for breakfast immediately looked up as the Kyros heir froze in place.
Only then did he seem to realize that he’d practically shouted his incredibly suspicious defense across the room without anyone actually accusing him of anything.
His face immediately flushed.
"Ahem."
The golden-eyed cadet awkwardly cleared his throat, desperately attempting to recover whatever innocence he’d just thrown straight out the window.
Meanwhile, Ollie’s curiosity shot through the roof.
His eyes narrowed.
Instead of letting the matter go like any considerate friend probably would’ve done, the blonde slowly began slinking around Luca, inspecting him from different angles as though whatever horrifying secret his good brother was talking about might suddenly reveal itself if he stared hard enough.
"What’d you hide?"
"That! I hid "
"Huh? What do you mean? Are you saying you hid your glasses?"
Luca’s face grew even redder.
Finally, as though deciding it would be best to simply come clean, he straightened his back and declared with complete seriousness, "I don’t need to wear something so dangerous anymore, brother!"
"Eh?"
Ollie’s little hair antenna practicallyto the side.
His gaze automatically drifted toward Luca’s perfectly normal face.
Since when had eyeglasses become dangerous?!
For several seconds, the newly licensed mechanic genuinely wondered if there’d been some horrifying defect in the pair that they’d somehow failed to notice.
But no.
Apparently, none of those perfectly reasonable concerns had anything to do with the problem.
Because the glasses themselves were completely harmless.
The danger had only appeared after one initially well-behaved little chipmunk made the absolutely devastating discovery that his husband, Xavier Solaris, could wear them too.
Yes.
Of all the things that finally got Luca to act on the whole emulated bloodline ability situation, it actually ended up being a pair of eyeglasses that somehow found its way into the hands of the Imperial Crown Prince.
Because that night, while practically everyone else was doing their best to get whatever precious sleep they could, Luca had unfortunately been doing far too much thinking.
He’d been particularly bothered by what he’d heard would likely happen to the twins.
It wasn’t that he felt guilty about Lyrian and Cyrion finally experiencing the consequences of their own actions. Luca understood that they’d hurt far too many people, and whatever happened from there would be the result of choices they’d knowingly made themselves.
But even then, he couldn’t help feeling a little sad at the thought that the Luxastras would likely disown them the moment they learned that the twins had cracked.
More than anything, Luca found himself wondering what those two might’ve been like if they’d never possessed such a bloodline ability in the first place.
Would they still have turned out the same?
Would they have grown up believing that everyone around them was either someone to control or someone who might eventually control them?
Or would they have gotten the chance to become completely different people?
The conflicted little guide had no way of knowing.
So instead of sleeping like he ought to, he simply sat there on the bed, staring off into space while his thoughts continued running in circles.
Just as expected, Xavier noticed.
His husband had already been watching him for some time before finally approaching, his gaze lingering on the very obvious pair of glasses still sitting on Luca’s face.
"Are you planning to sleep with those on?"
"Hm?"
Luca blinked before realizing what Xavier meant.
His fingers rose to adjust the frame.
"I think it’s better like this," he murmured. "The glasses work really well, and if I get used to wearing them, then I’ll be able to keep them on more often. At least until they’re not needed anymore."
Xavier raised a brow.
There it was.
He’d already suspected something was bothering his little wife, but that answer made the problem considerably clearer.
With everything they’d discovered about the incense burner, Luca had apparently decided that keeping the emulated Luxastra ability for longer was somehow his responsibility now. Never mind that everyone had already assured him there was no need to maintain it when there wasn’t an immediate threat.
His little wife was clearly prepared to adjust his everyday life around keeping the ability available, even if that meant forcing himself to get used to wearing protective glasses practically all the time.
Xavier stared at him for a moment.
He could’ve reminded Luca that they already had more than enough information to work with, the twins were safely secured, and so far, they hadn’t encountered anyone else who needed to be freed from the effects of their ability.
But the Imperial Prince also knew exactly who he’d married.
Luca being Luca meant that once he’d convinced himself he could make things safer or easier for everyone else by accepting a little inconvenience of his own, getting him to stop would probably require far more than a reasonable argument.
The Imperial Crown Prince’s gaze dropped toward the glasses again.
Then, with an admittedly sly thought taking shape in his head, Xavier decided it was time to take matters into his own hands.
