Rhazira forcibly opens a gate to Wyrmfall, sacrificing wyverns in the process. Upon arrival, she immediately confronts Kael, furious and seemingly mistaking him for someone who wronged her. Their intense battle is interrupted by a massive surge of mana, drawing both their attention to a central chamber where Riley is in grave danger.

Maybe there was some sort of ranking for the worst possible things that could ever enter someone’s line of sight.

Somewhere up there would probably be the most horrific crimes imaginable, the sort of things that would have even someone like Kael doing a double take just to make sure he’d actually seen what he thought he did.

But regardless of what else made that list, there could be nothing worse than watching his mate succumb to danger right in front of his eyes while knowing he didn’t have enough time to reach him.

Kael couldn’t even see anything else.

His entire field of vision seemed to narrow to that extremely small space between Riley and the massive claw descending toward his head, a distance that continued shrinking with every passing moment.

The Dragon Lord’s heart, which had momentarily stopped beating in utter dread, suddenly slammed back to life.

His face contorted in sheer terror as he pushed out as much mana as he possibly could, desperate to cross that distance and intercept the claw before it could ever reach his mate.

At the same time, Rhazira’s expression couldn’t have been more different.

While the golden Dragon Lord looked absolutely horrified, the Wyvern Queen was practically beside herself with elation.

Her beloved was finally moving!

He was finally taking matters into his own hands, so when she saw that blasted golden dragon attempting to interfere with his path to healing and completion, there was absolutely no way Rhazira was going to allow it.

So she moved too.

In a beat that would’ve been missed by most mortal eyes, Kael was already heading straight for Riley.

He moved faster than he should’ve been capable of moving, especially beneath the overwhelming and practically crippling intensity of the innate dragon fear radiating from the colossal figure currently attempting to harm his mate.

Blood was already dripping from Kael’s nose and ears.

His body was practically tearing itself apart from the sheer amount of mana he was exerting just to resist the influence of the Primordial Dragon’s corpse and keep moving at such an impossible speed.

But Kael wasn’t consciously doing any of that.

At that point, there was no careful thought behind his actions, no consideration for what channeling such an insane amount of mana could do to his body.

There was only Riley.

Kael’s arms were already outstretched as he zeroed in on his mate, desperately trying to close the remaining distance between them.

Only for something to slam into the golden Dragon Lord with the force of a natural disaster.

The impact drove every bit of air from Kael’s lungs and sent him crashing violently against the cavern wall. Stone immediately fractured beneath his body, causing significant structural damage to a place that was already being held together primarily through the Wyvern King’s abilities.

But Kael barely seemed to notice.

He was operating on pure instinct at that point, practically no different from a beast surviving on its last remaining reflexes.

His body could break.

His bones could shatter.

None of it mattered.

His attention remained entirely on Riley.

"NOOOO!"

Kael’s terror-stricken scream tore through the cavern as he immediately tried to rush back toward his mate, who, from where he stood, had just been struck by the Wyvern King.

The entire cavern practically shook from the intensity of the wail that left him.

Kael didn’t even seem to register the Wyvern Queen’s claws puncturing straight through his shoulders as she tried to hold him back.

Rhazira cackled.

But her laughter quickly turned into a shriek when deep blue flames suddenly erupted from the golden dragon’s body, engulfing her at the same time Kael’s form began violently shifting in unconscious desperation.

He was losing control.

And it was that heart-wrenching scream that Riley last heard before he finally succumbed to the admittedly painful blow.

Strangely enough, however, more than the pain of his physical body being torn by the very claws he’d spent practically his entire life trying to avoid, what bothered Riley the most was Kael’s distress.

His mate sounded absolutely devastated.

If only Riley could comfort him somehow.

If only he could tell that rascal of a dragon that everything was going to be alright before Kael ended up doing something ridiculous.

Unfortunately, that was becoming increasingly impossible when Riley could barely keep his eyes open.

Especially when a voice suddenly echoed through his mind.

Riley’s remaining awareness slipped away almost immediately.

And because of that, there was no way for the black dragon to know that one particular golden dragon had gone completely feral following the events that rocked Wyrmfall.

Farther away, the wyverns still locked in battle with Lady Cirila abruptly stopped.

Even the golden dragoness herself froze when an extremely distraught and livid roar tore through the territory, carrying the unmistakable agony of someone who had just lost everything.

"!!!"

The effect was not only immediate but also encompassing.

Even the more mindless creatures still roaming Wyrmfall scrambled to hide or flee as the massive wave of power rolling out from that area swept across the territory.

It was the sort of pressure any being with even the slightest survival instinct would know to fear.

But at that point, one Kael Dravaryn couldn’t have cared less.

He could die right then and there if that was what it took to force his way toward Riley.

His entire body radiated with such an obscene amount of mana that his father would’ve immediately warned him against continuing.

Kael knew what happened when a dragon pushed beyond the limits of what their core could normally sustain.

He knew he could very well extinguish his own life force if he kept supplementing his power like this.

Yet...

None of that mattered.

Not the possibility of dying.

Not the damage already accumulating throughout his body.

And certainly not the maniacal Wyvern Queen currently standing between him and his mate.

Rhazira, on the other hand, had to give the youngster some credit.

Managing to take out her other arm this time around was rather impressive, especially when he was simultaneously fighting against the suppressive influence of her beloved’s body.

It really was unfortunate.

If she could’ve gotten his heart intact, then it would’ve undoubtedly been one of the best replacements they could procure at the moment.

But with the way the foolish golden dragon was burning through his own life force so recklessly, there was a very real chance none of his organs would remain in good enough condition to harvest afterward.

What a shame.

Still, that was fine.

If Kael Dravaryn insisted on making himself useless like this, then all Rhazira had to do was keep him away from her King and that blasted Hale brat until the foolish golden dragon finally exhausted himself to death.

__

The noticeably hurt yet still excited Wyvern Queen spat out a mouthful of blood as she prepared herself to stop the already maddened dragon lord from getting any closer.

Then, almost as an afterthought, she turned her head toward Riley, intending to provoke Kael even further by taunting him about how that little toy he seemed to care about far too much must already be serving his purpose.

But the words never made it out.

Because much to Rhazira’s utter shock, while blood was certainly seeping out of the clearly injured Riley Hale from the vicious gash across his chest, something far stranger was happening to it.

The blood pooling beneath him was moving.

At first, she thought it was simply being drawn somewhere. But then the droplets began trembling so violently that her expression slowly changed as she watched them rise from the ground.

One by one, they expanded.

Ancient runes formed in the air, each symbol made entirely from the anomaly’s blood before suddenly collapsing back into liquid. Then, rather than returning to the ground, the blood began revolving around the black dragon’s body in a continuously moving helix.

Rhazira stared.

Still, despite the bizarre sight before her, she somehow managed to maintain the same look of elation she’d worn earlier.

This was probably part of the process.

It had to be.

Her beloved had finally taken matters into his own hands.

For so long, Rhazira had been forced to do everything herself. In fact, the brief period after she’d first managed to restore him had been the last time he’d actively helped her build the future they’d always wanted together.

But knowing her mate, always so thoughtful even when he could barely hold himself together, he must’ve finally decided to do what he could despite his deteriorating condition.

So whatever was happening before her couldn’t possibly be something to fear.

It had to be part of his plan.

She only needed to trust him.

At least, that was what she continued telling herself until Riley Hale’s body slowly began levitating off the ground.

Rhazira’s smile stiffened.

Then came the sound.

Her eyes immediately snapped toward her beloved.

For a moment, she simply stared at the thin spiderweb fracture that had suddenly appeared across the colossal body she’d spent so long trying to restore.

And just like that, whatever remained of the devoted woman’s smile completely fell.
