Kael's mother, Lady Cirila, urges him to leave and find his mate Riley, assuring him she can handle the remaining wyverns. Kael departs, but struggles to locate Riley due to distorted senses. Meanwhile, the Wyvern Queen Rhazira, frustrated by the siege's failure, orders her remaining forces back to Wyrmfall. To reach it faster, she begins a dangerous ritual, sacrificing her own wyverns to power a gate. Orryn, witnessing this, decides to leave, as his mission to buy time and gather proof for Riley is complete.

Between the gate being forcibly opened right in front of the MBE and the agonized wails of the helpless wyverns being sacrificed to power it, Rhazira actually couldn’t hear a thing.

At that point, even if an explosion had gone off right beside her, she probably wouldn’t have noticed, much less cared. All she could hear was the deafening rush of her own blood circulating through her body as the massive runic formation forcibly squeezed mana out of her at a rate that would’ve already brought anyone else to their knees in sheer agony.

But despite the excruciating pain, the distressed Wyvern Queen remained standing.

She had to.

Because right now, Rhazira needed to be prepared for anything and everything that could possibly be waiting for her on the other side.

Just what the hell could’ve gone wrong in Wyrmfall?

Had whatever happened already been going on since earlier, back when she’d first lost the connection to the other half of the relic? Or had she actually caught it early enough that there was still time to stop whatever was happening?

The uncertainty was driving her mad.

Because if something had happened to him, or if his already progressing treatment had somehow been compromised by anyone stupid enough to enter their domain while she was gone, then Rhazira genuinely wasn’t sure she’d be able to maintain whatever remained of her composure.

Not even in front of her own beloved.

The runes surrounding her grew brighter.

More screams erupted as the last of the mana needed to stabilize the passage was ruthlessly ripped from the wyverns unfortunate enough to remain within the formation. One after another, their mismatched bodies collapsed until the glowing runic gate finally materialized before her, leaving behind nothing but a pile of grotesque remains sacrificed for a single use.

Rhazira didn’t even look at them.

She didn’t spare a glance for the beings who’d just been sacrificed for her sake, nor did she hesitate to consider what she’d left behind.

The moment the glowing doorway stabilized, the Wyvern Queen simply walked straight through it.

__

Traveling toward Wyrmfall like that was truly far from the most ideal experience.

With how damaged and unstable the entire territory had become, there was always the possibility that the gate wouldn’t even successfully deliver them to their intended destination. But considering how Rhazira managed to reach their base in one piece, along with a few straggling wyverns who’d apparently been strong and fortunate enough to survive the passage, she figured the heavens must truly be on her side.

Not to mention, it didn’t even take her much time to find the probable culprit behind everything that had gone wrong.

The first blow came out of nowhere.

Kael’s expression changed the moment he sensed it, and by the sheer amount of mana he had to dispense just to stop that outstretched claw from reaching him, there was no mistaking who had suddenly appeared.

The Wyvern Queen.

Kael immediately jumped back, his slitted golden eyes tracking her every movement as he settled into a lethal stance.

He’d already been desperately trying to find his mate, and now, of all the things that could’ve gotten in his way, it just had to be this crazed woman.

The wretched meddler snarled at him as though she were personally offended by his very presence.

Which was honestly rather rich coming from someone who’d once done practically the same thing by invading his home.

Then again, maybe this was simply the heavens’ way of giving them an opportunity to settle past grievances, but regardless of the reason, the two of them facing each other again had probably been unavoidable from the moment she returned to Wyrmfall.

Because Kael had absolutely no intention of allowing this woman anywhere near his mate.

He wanted to reach Riley as quickly as possible, but he was painfully aware that, for some reason, the crazed creature standing before him currently felt like an even greater threat than the Wyvern King, who was supposedly still in the middle of his reconstruction.

At least there was a handicap that would hold down the latter.

But this one?

Someone this unhinged would probably take Riley apart for everything he was if she thought she could offer the pieces to someone else.

"You dared to come here yourself?" the Wyvern Queen spat.

A psychotic grin slowly twisted across her scarred face, her eyes widening with such unmistakable madness that Kael’s entire body instinctively tensed.

"You should’ve done that before!" she shrieked. "Then I wouldn’t have had to go through all the trouble just to procure some poor replacement!"

Kael stopped.

Replacement?

His expression immediately contorted.

For the briefest moment, his mind supplied him with every possible meaning behind those words, and every single one ended with someone he cared about in that woman’s hands.

Worse, Riley.

Something inside the Dragon Lord snapped.

The pressure exploding from Kael’s body was enough to make the entire cavern tremble as he lunged forward, deep blue flames erupting around him before rapidly spreading across the surrounding space.

Rhazira screeched and thrust her claws forward.

Those grotesquely reinforced limbs shimmered with the indestructible scales of the Primordial Dragon, slicing toward Kael with enough force to tear straight through ordinary defenses.

Unfortunately for her, there was absolutely nothing ordinary about the Dragon Lord she was facing.

Kael didn’t pull a single punch.

An insane amount of mana poured out of him as a dense barrier formed directly against her claws, rebounding the first vicious strike before Kael immediately retaliated with a concentrated blast of blue fire.

The impact sent Rhazira flying backward.

Flames roared across the cavern, consuming everything in their path and eating through the surrounding rock, but the Wyvern Queen tore straight through the inferno with her reinforced claws.

Her unusual, halfling constitution meant Kael’s blue flames couldn’t simply consume her the way they would most beings.

But neither was she completely immune.

Flesh scorched.

Smoke rose from her mutilated body.

Rhazira didn’t seem to care.

The fighting rapidly intensified into a near-blinding exchange of reinforced claws, blue flame, and violently tearing winds. Their movements became so fast that anyone unfortunate enough to witness the battle probably would’ve struggled to tell where one ended and the other began, if not for the destruction constantly marking wherever they landed.

Walls cracked.

Structural pillars shattered under direct impacts.

Entire sections of the cavern trembled beneath the overwhelming pressure generated by two beings who clearly had no intention of letting the other pass.

Then Rhazira suddenly charged straight through another burst of blue flames.

Her eyes were wild.

"Your heart!"

Kael’s pupils constricted.

"Give me your heart!"

The Wyvern Queen lunged forward, her reinforced claws aimed directly for a fatal strike.

Kael was already moving to meet her.

Then both of them froze.

The change was so sudden that even their brutal fight came to an abrupt standstill.

Mana.

The already tumultuous mana surrounding Wyrmfall was moving.

No.

It was being pulled.

Kael’s head snapped toward one direction as the environmental mana around them began rushing toward a single location at such an alarming rate that it almost felt like something had suddenly opened an enormous vacuum in the middle of Wyrmfall.

Rhazira reacted at practically the same moment.

Whatever rage had consumed both of them was immediately overtaken by the realization that something far more significant was happening elsewhere.

Then they moved.

Kael shot forward, no longer caring about finishing their fight as he raced toward the source of the disturbance.

Unfortunately, Rhazira did the same.

He wanted to stop her.

Every instinct demanded that he prevent the woman from getting anywhere near whatever was causing such an enormous disturbance, especially when there was a very real possibility that Riley was somehow involved.

But Kael was painfully aware of one undeniable disadvantage.

This was her territory.

No matter how fast he moved, Rhazira knew these tunnels considerably better than he did, and if that disturbance was coming from somewhere important to her, she would undoubtedly know the fastest route there.

Sure enough, she did.

Kael followed the violent trail of mana as fast as he possibly could, tearing through whatever obstacles stood in his way until the central chamber finally came into view.

He burst inside.

And for one horrifying moment, everything seemed to stop.

There was Riley.

His mate.

And heading straight toward him was a massive claw.
