Bam! Bam! Bam!
For some time now, Adam and Midgar had been moving across the rocky plain, locked in endless clashes.
The Lords, hovering in the distance, watched the battle with curiosity, as none of them yet knew who would emerge victorious.
However, one Lord never doubted his bet for a single moment.
"It looks like we’re nearing the end, doesn’t it?" Ergander smiled warmly as the battlefield reflected in his eyes.
But his friend wasn’t quite so optimistic.
Blafor narrowed his eyes, closely studying their clashes.
"They’re evenly matched. Adam made the right decision when he chose to use his wings as a weapon, but... that’s not enough to win."
"You’re still underestimating him, Blafor. You say they’re evenly matched, yet you still don’t believe he’ll win. Why?" Ergander tilted his head.
Blafor had an answer.
"You know why. Adam possesses incredible strength for a K4-Phantom, but he’s still a First Circle Warrior. He doesn’t have the power that Midgar has, and you know that."
Ergander nodded. He didn’t deny it.
"Sure, but something tells me Adam has another ace up his sleeve. Maybe he doesn’t even know it himself yet."
"Hmm? How is that possible? You... Ergander, I want to believe you’re right, but you believe in this guy too much. In this world, there are only a few K4-Phantoms who can defeat a Viscount."
Ergander shrugged as he put his hands behind his back.
"Yes, and Adam is the top contender to become the next Second Rank Phantom. He has to do it even if his opponent is a Viscount from the Befallen Crown. He has no other choice if he wants to survive."
True, and Adam understood that better than anyone else.
Clang!
He swung his blades, knocking Midgar aside.
Midgar slammed the blunt tip of his poleaxe into the ground to slow himself down, but Adam was already ahead of him.
SPARK!
With a bright flash, his blades burst into a shimmering flame. It radiated intense heat, but it wasn’t red or amber. The color quickly shifted from white to purple and then to red.
Midgar’s eyes widened as, at the last moment, he thrust his poleaxe forward.
But it was already too late.
"I told you so, Lakma," Adam’s voice rang out. "You can help me. Together, we still have many victories ahead of us."
Midgar didn’t know who Adam was addressing, but he didn’t have time to think about it.
"DAMN IT!" Midgar exclaimed as a torrent of flame crashed down on him with a bright flash.
BLAST!
A deafening explosion ripped through the rocky plain as the impact sent Midgar flying to the side, trails of dark smoke trailing behind him.
Midgar soared over the surface of the plain before crashing into a random rock.
Crack! Crack! Crack!
His back smashed into the first rock, but the impact didn’t stop there - a second and third followed until Midgar finally came to a halt.
"GHA!" Blood gushed from his mouth as waves of pain washed over his body one after another.
His face contorted in agony as he struggled to roll onto his stomach and brace himself with his hand on the ground.
"You bastard... After all our clashes, you still have such pathetic tricks up your sleeve?" Midgar exclaimed, his voice filled with a rage that gave him strength.
Unlike him, Adam wasn’t bleeding out, he was on the winning side in this round, but... they had both reached their limits.
"Agh... Agh... Agh..."
Adam was breathing heavily, while sparks of flame flashed before his weary eyes.
Step.
Midgar took a step forward, but he couldn’t go any further. His body wouldn’t obey him.
"I see..." Midgar’s eyes grew deeper as he looked at his poleaxe, his Arc. "So, in the end, you’re the only thing I have left."
’Huh?’ Adam noticed Midgar’s changed expression. ’Why does he look like that? He... he seems to be making a difficult decision.’
Adam expected that now would be the moment for the final and most powerful attack. Ideas about what he could use against Midgar flashed through his mind, but Midgar had other plans for their battle.
Tremble.
Midgar’s aura trembled as he gathered all his remaining strength to soar high above the ground.
"What the...?" Adam was confused. "Is he trying to escape? No... That can’t be."
Adam was right. Midgar would rather die than flee the battlefield as a loser.
As a Lord, he had one advantage over a K4-Phantom.
No matter how talented Adam was or how powerful his abilities were, there was one thing he still lacked.
"Adam Vinter..."
Midgar’s powerful voice boomed as he gripped his poleaxe tightly with both hands.
"I admit you are a worthy opponent, and the Befallen Crown has every reason to want to kill you. That is precisely why I am using my last trump card against you, something I would never do against another K4-Phantom, for that would be a great disgrace."
"But..."
"It’s true, you are a completely different case."
Adam didn’t understand the meaning behind Midgar’s words, but soon he saw everything.
Tremble!
Midgar’s poleaxe trembled as his blue eyes shone brightly.
At that very moment, a gray circle appeared before him, filled with runes along the edges and bright lines with dots in the center.
Adam’s eyes widened as he immediately realized what it was. He had seen the Lords use these abilities at the Dark Shore.
What’s more... very soon, he, too, was supposed to receive something similar, for now a constellation was hovering before Midgar.
"Demonic Gates - open!" Midgar exclaimed as he swung his poleaxe through the air as if it were a staff.
TREMBLE!
A powerful pillar of energy burst from the poleaxe, shaking the very fabric of space as a wave of energy surged downward.
As soon as the first wave reached the ground, the pillar of energy gave way to a black rift that opened up within it.
In the next moment, a multitude of red eyes, just like those of the gray demon, appeared from the rift as dozens of claws grabbed hold of its edges, preparing to emerge into the real world.
They all had only one goal - to kill Adam and carry out the order of their master, the one who ruled a constellation.
