Kang Li discusses her fifth sister-in-law's recent change in behavior with her mother, Cai Xiufen. While Cai Xiufen remains critical of the fifth sister-in-law's past jealousy and possessiveness towards Kang Li's brother, Kang Li defends her, attributing it to her upbringing and deep love for her husband. Kang Li suggests her fifth sister-in-law is now understanding and looking forward, urging her mother to let go of past grievances.

"Cold salad!"

Cai Xiufen shot Kang Li a look, saying, "Stop clowning around, it doesn’t help! I’m even more pissed than you! My daughter’s sharp as a tack, but the second she’s bullied, she turns dumb. I’m so angry I don’t even know what to say."

Kang Li blinked, grinning, "You’re imitating Guoguo now."

Sharp as a tack!

That’s Guoguo’s catchphrase.

Cai Xiufen ignored her.

"Mom~"

Kang Li deliberately dragged the last sound, acting spoiled: "Come on, don’t be mad at me, okay? I really didn’t take Fifth Sister-in-law’s side—I’m just worried for my little brother. And I don’t want you to waste energy over his family’s troubles. Plus, think about it, would I really let someone just walk all over me?"

Cai Xiufen glanced at Kang Li but still said nothing.

Kang Li had no other way, so she told Cai Xiufen all about what Wang Pan said to her at the gate on the afternoon of lunar December 29th, and also what she herself said back. Finally, she said, "Mom, you heard it all, right? I wasn’t the one feeling wronged, nobody bullied me, and I made everything perfectly clear."

"Did you really say all that?"

If you don’t like hanging out with our family, that’s fine, but you can’t stop my son and grandson from seeing us—Cai Xiufen thought Kang Li’s words to Wang Pan were spot on.

"Real as pearls."

Kang Li nodded, smiling, "Fifth Sister-in-law apologized to me—I didn’t accept it. I told her she didn’t owe me any apologies. After all, liking or disliking someone is everyone’s own right, nobody else should interfere. So, no need for her to say sorry, but not respecting our family—that’s where she’s wrong. Anyway, I said it all straight, and also told her to live well with my brother, and stop overthinking stuff."

Cai Xiufen took a deep breath when she heard that and said, "That’s good."

...

On the sixth day, the Ecological Recycling Park officially opened. Guided by staff, Kang Li and leaders from the province, city, county and town who came for the opening ceremony toured the whole park. Afterwards, they all sat together to chat for about an hour, ended the meeting, and then Kang Li saw the leaders off as they got into their cars.

After a good night’s sleep, on the seventh morning after breakfast, Kang Li instructed the two bodyguards who’d driven over before the holidays to take turns driving Jiang Guosheng’s family and Kang Guoan’s family, plus other relatives working or studying in North City, to the county town. She told Kang Guosheng to lead them all from the county straight to the provincial capital, then take the shuttle bus to the airport.

Bottom line: she covered all the family members’ plane tickets.

She didn’t give Kang Guosheng any chance to refuse.

After all, it was freezing out—impossible to squeeze into a train, even with a soft seat. Train stations are packed, and their big family has elders and kids. Squeezing onto a train just isn’t convenient.

"Third Brother, Third Sister-in-law, Fourth Brother, Fourth Sister-in-law, we’re heading off now. If you need anything here, just call me."

Kang Li, Captain Kang, Cai Xiufen, Ming Han, Ming Wei, and Bun were the last group heading to the provincial capital airport. It was about three in the afternoon. Before getting in the car, Kang Li looked at Third Brother and Fourth Brother’s couples and said goodbye.

Third and Fourth Brother listened, nodded at the same time, and reminded Kang Li to be careful on the road—and to call as soon as they arrived in North City for peace of mind.

"Bye."

Inside the car, Kang Li waved at Third and Fourth Brother through the half-open window glass.

"Bye, Aunt!"

This was the teenage sons of Third and Fourth Brother, still in middle and high school.

"Bye! Listen to your parents, study hard, Aunt’s waiting for you all to go to North City for college!"

Kang Li looked at her nephews with gentle eyes and smiled, waving goodbye: "If you need any study materials that you can’t buy here, call Aunt—she’ll get them for you in North City and send them over."

"Okay."

The boys nodded.

...

Flying back to North City was quick. Knowing what time Kang Li’s group would land, Jiang Boya arranged several cars ahead of time to wait at the airport.

So, right after they got off the plane, Kang Li and everyone piled into the cars and arrived at the two-courtyard compound under Captain Kang and Cai Xiufen’s names around nine at night.

A few sisters-in-law were busy cleaning. Kang Li didn’t meddle, but instead helped her old mom in the kitchen to whip up some simple noodle soup for everyone.

"Take Bun and the others to the room to rest, leave the cleaning to me and Second Sister-in-law and the rest."

After dinner, Big Sister-in-law saw Kang Li cleaning up the dishes and quickly took them from her, not letting Kang Li keep working.

"Li Treasure, listen to your Big Sister-in-law. During dinner, I saw Bun, Tangyuan, and Guoguo all nodding off! Go on, give the kids a wash and let them sleep early."

He Hui chimed in at the side, persuading Kang Li.

Wang Pan didn’t say anything but was quick on her feet, carrying the stacked dishes to the kitchen.

"All right, I’ll really be lazy then!"

Kang Li laughed.

"Go on, go on! We can handle things here, you don’t need to come join the fun!"

He Hui waved with a smile.
