However, unbeknownst to Falad, Thaddeus presented the optimal choice for Orion.
But expediency was crucial; they were under a degree of surveillance and could not afford detection.
This necessity drove Orion's need to infiltrate the capital. While the infiltration unit exerted significant effort, their capabilities were somewhat constrained. Despite their strategic maneuvers and information gathering, the intel remained insufficient.
The core issue lay in the inherent risks, and Orion harbored a strong dislike for uncertainty.
He traversed space like an apparition in the dead of night, diligently masking his presence and movements. He had succeeded in analyzing and devising a method to circumvent Thaddeus' Spatial Veil. Though his own ability paled in comparison to Thaddeus' innate talent, he had gleaned valuable insights into concealment—a facet he intended to incorporate into his future research endeavors.
Approaching the wall, he observed signs of patrolling around the perimeter; these guards, absent during daylight, were now active under the cover of darkness.
A portion of Orion considered the possibility that their surveillance systems might be inactive at night. Yet, he quickly dismissed this, wary that such a notion could be a deliberate misdirection, a trap he refused to fall into.
His Protocol and Temporal Locus abilities activated in unison, his spatial awareness charting the landscape while the complementary skills indicated the most advantageous route to evade discovery.
His legs propelled him forward with swiftness, his boots making absolutely no sound upon the ground.
Soon, he sensed a familiar energy signature approaching from the opposite side of the wall—Thaddeus.
His spatial sense couldn't detect it; only Temporal Locus registered Thaddeus' approach, indicating that the latter was already employing stealth measures.
Adhering to his dual-skill procedure, he expertly navigated past the patrols before executing a teleportation maneuver, ascending a meter above the wall.
Thaddeus, on the other side, had also perceived Orion, while maintaining his stealth. He mirrored Orion's action, joining him in the air above the imposing barrier.
They converged mid-air, extending their arms to grasp one another.
Thaddeus promptly initiated the Veil Weave technique, after which they both teleported to a location within the confines of the wall.
They wasted no time; Thaddeus took the lead, guiding Orion towards their current sanctuary.
Orion followed in silence, his gaze absorbing the surroundings of the Sylgrid domain. Night had fallen, rendering the usual clamor and activity nearly imperceptible, yet this quietude did not deter him from observing the individuals present.
He could discern an atmosphere of contentment and ease.
Orion was fully aware that the majority of the Sylgrid remained oblivious to the impending events, making their apparent joy a source of mild surprise. Perhaps they were simply celebrating an occasion or reveling in a festivity.
Orion's thoughts then turned to the Sylgrid who were informed. Based on intelligence from the infiltration group, the underworld had knowledge of the event and its implications, though the precise nature of it remained elusive to the unit.
However, such details were secondary now; his presence here ensured he would obtain all necessary information, as several strategies were already formulating in his mind.
A few minutes later, they reached the hotel. Thaddeus opened the door to their designated room, and upon entering, Orion observed his companions, each occupied with their own endeavors. Some attempted to rest, though it was evident they were far from at peace, while others were fully alert. The palpable strain of stress was etched onto every face.
His attention settled upon Seris, who stood beside Jalen, a figure of weariness with closed eyes, still engrossed in his drawing. Seris herself wore a stern expression.
They hadn't yet registered Orion's arrival, thanks to Thaddeus' discreet escort. Orion subtly signaled Thaddeus to cease the concealment, and instantly, their gazes snapped towards him.
"Onion boy!" Naturally, Arlen was the first to exclaim, earning him a swift slap from Selene.
Orion offered a slight smile. He had much to convey to them, but pressing matters took precedence.
"What's the situation?"
Seris's lips curved into a smile, her eyes meeting Orion's, a wave of relief washing over her features.
Despite their meticulous planning and expectation of a smooth progression, a small window for catastrophic failure persisted, a peril they could ill afford in their current predicament.
Seris moved closer to him and began recounting the events that had unfolded since their arrival. While they had already exchanged most information via their communication bracelets, she could now provide every minute detail.
By the time she concluded, Orion was seated, his expression one of deep contemplation.
"Any significant shifts in the past two days?" Orion inquired.
"Beyond the heightened security and increased patrols encircling the capital, not much has changed," Erevan responded, leaning against the wall.
"Our primary concern at present is whether word of our presence has reached the Emperor," Selene remarked.
"We've been monitoring their hideout as frequently as possible, and thus far, there's been no indication of exposure, but we cannot afford to be overly confident," Erevan added.
"And let's not forget our esteemed Falad; for all we know, he..." Arlen interjected, reminding them of the potential threat.
"He's definitely concocting something," Orion interjected quietly.
"If his reputation has already established such a pattern, we shouldn't anticipate anything different; that would be naive," Orion stated with a weary exhale.
"Furthermore, it's improbable that someone who has navigated peril for so long would be ensnared by a turncoat like Jak," he concluded.
"So, he orchestrated this to have us captured?" Thaddeus inquired, his eyebrows lifting in surprise.
"It must be something more complex than that," Erevan countered.
"Like what, for instance?" Arlen pressed.
"That line of questioning is unproductive; we know next to nothing about him, and our available information is quite scant," Selene corrected them.
Arlen simply let out an exaggerated sigh.
CLAP!
Orion clapped his hands together, commanding their focus.
"We're going in circles, and we simply cannot afford that. So much is on the line. We will address this matter systematically, proceeding step by step." Orion declared, his gaze sweeping across each of them.
They all gave a synchronised nod.
"Excellent, now let's determine our path forward," Orion said, his attention shifting towards the still-drawing Jalen.
