Following the successful defense of Sanchou Base, the massive pile of over 17 million crystal cores is finally counted and divided among the parties. Despite initial friction regarding the distribution of the highest-level cores, Jin Xuyan asserts his dominance, leaving the local leaders with no choice but to acquiesce. As preparations for departure begin, news of Pei Gan's death reaches the Mountain Base, leading Pei Yijun to suspect Jin Xuyan's involvement based on reports of a mysterious fighter using black flames. Fearing impending turmoil, Pei Yijun orders intelligence gathering on Jin's recent movements.

Pei Yijun’s remarks caught Li Yang off guard. With a light laugh, he countered, "Brother Pei, there is no need for such alarm. Our base sits well away from the urban sprawl, shielding us from any zombie tidal waves."

A heavy sigh escaped Pei Yijun as he rejoined, "It goes far beyond mere zombies."

"Look at the facts: the Lin’an City Base fell to bizarre monsters, and the Sanchou Base was overrun by an onslaught of over 18 million zombies. Furthermore, reports indicate that the mutants at Green Lake Base have spiraled into madness, resulting in massive casualties."

"All of these catastrophes unfolded simultaneously. Don't you find such synchronicity incredibly suspicious?" Pei Yijun questioned.

Li Yang stood stunned, needing a moment to process before he finally asked, "Brother Pei, are you suggesting some hidden hand is orchestrating these events from the shadows?"

"I cannot say for certain, as it remains a mere conjecture. However, caution is the better part of valor."

After a brief, pensive silence, Li Yang answered, "Understood. My team shall return immediately upon concluding our current assignment."

"Excellent."

Against the backdrop of a gathering, unseen storm, another full day drifted by.

The following dawn, the Phantom Team stirred early. After wrapping up their morning drills, the group assembled at the residence occupied by Jin Xuyan and Jiao Lizhi.

Since Wen Hanli and his squad had remained at Sanchou Base to manage the aftermath of the conflict, the team was free to depart without hindrance.

Having utilized teleportation on several occasions, the members no longer suffered the intense vertigo of their first attempt as they manifested within the training grounds of the Green Lake Base—a facility situated conveniently near the guard barracks.

Due to the recent hysteria among the mutants, the populace had retreated indoors, rarely venturing out unless mandated, leaving the premises deserted.

Although the snowfall had ceased, the chill had bitten even deeper into the air. The path lay encased in a brittle layer of ice, shattering with every step they took toward the central sector.

By 7:00 AM, the group reached the cafeteria. The building was comfortably warm, thanks to the heating system, and the famished team decided to break their fast there.

Mid-meal, Jin Xuyan briefed them on the state of the Green Lake Base. "Until we resolve this crisis, everyone must remain vigilant and increase patrol frequency. Junjie, Beiye, Ah Zhi, and I will proceed to the health center to seek a remedy."

The team reacted with genuine shock upon hearing of the parasites. The mere prospect of a creature thriving and replicating within human tissue made their skin crawl.

"Captain, perhaps we should accompany you to the health center to learn more about this threat. Should any of us be inadvertently infected, it would jeopardize the entire team," Xiao Qi urged.

Observing the clear revulsion and apprehension in his subordinates, Jin Xuyan deliberated briefly before nodding. "That is a sound suggestion."

Once finished, the team followed their captain to the medical facility, where they discovered a heavy security cordon consisting of over 500 guards.

Jin Xuyan stepped forward, inquiring, "Comrade, has there been an incident inside?"

The guard recognized them immediately and gave a somber nod. "Captain Jin, two mutants held in the isolation ward have just expired following a series of internal explosions."

"If they were already dead, why the massive security presence?" Zhang Yuan questioned.

The guard hesitated, then lowered his voice to mutter, "The mutants didn't just die. After the explosions, they transformed into grotesque, massive insects."

Dread washed over the team as they remembered the creatures they had battled at the Lunar Base, the realization of the threat reflected in their wide, anxious gazes.

Qin Luzi monitored his internal map, reporting, "Captain, there are 79 civilians, 109 mutants, and exactly 277 Matkuna soldiers currently inside."

"Impossible!" the guards shouted in unison.

Trusting in Qin Luzi’s intel, Jin Xuyan addressed the guards. "My unit will handle this. Order a full retreat and establish a 300-meter perimeter. Seal this building and evacuate the surrounding area immediately!"

Though doubtful that Matkuna soldiers could have bypassed their security, the guards followed the orders, with one individual quickly broadcasting the alert to their superiors.

Directives issued, Jin Xuyan led his team into the health center.

Upon entry, Wen Kai and Wen Mo promptly barricaded every door and window.

Feng Yun then wove a spatial barrier around the entire structure, ensuring that even if the parasites tried to escape via the ventilation ducts, they would remain trapped within the field.

Hardly had they finished the containment when a violent crash erupted from the quarantine zone.

BOOM! CRASH!

Racing toward the sound, they bore witness to a macabre spectacle.

Within the rooms, the bodies of the mutants were being shredded from the inside as Matkuna soldiers clawed their way out. Some hosts detonated instantly, while others suffered horrific, writhing mutations before being consumed from within.

Jiao Lizhi and Du Beiye, already familiar with the savage reproduction cycle of the Matkuna, could not suppress a shudder at the sight.

Only Jin Xuyan, Yuan Ruiye, and Mo Junjie remained composed. Mo Junjie, in particular, showed no signs of fear or disgust, his eyes burning with an intense, clinical curiosity.

He stepped closer to the glass wall to observe the matured Matkuna, his focus entirely unmoved by the blood-drenched floor or the scattered remains of the hosts.

Witnessing this chilling lack of empathy, Jian Huan scowled and retorted, "Mo Junjie, this is hardly the time for observation. Lives are being lost. We need to act!"
