Looking toward the Mo family mutants, Jin Xuyan continued, "If it becomes necessary, go ahead and assist them. We need to reduce casualties to the lowest possible level."
Acknowledging the directive, the team members responded together, "Understood."
Once he provided further directions to Zhang Yuan, Jin Xuyan stepped away from the wall to attempt a phone call. The line continued ringing for an extended period without any response.
His brow furrowed in concern, he attempted the call three additional times, still receiving no answer. Anxious that misfortune might have befallen his fiancée, he contacted another number. The connection was established promptly, and Mo Junjie’s voice came through.
"Captain, what prompted your call to me?"
"Is Ah Zhi currently with you or Beiye?" Jin Xuyan inquired.
"My sister-in-law isn’t with Beiye or me right now." He paused briefly before continuing, "The most recent sighting of my sister-in-law was three days prior. She departed abruptly, and her whereabouts remain unknown to me."
In response to this, Jin Xuyan questioned, "Are you together with Beiye?"
"No, she mentioned having matters to attend to and then departed."
Despite his inner worry, Jin Xuyan maintained his composure. "Alright. What’s the status on your end?"
"The conflict has concluded, and the base has dispatched personnel to clean up the aftermath."
"Excellent. Get some rest. Things look grim here. You may have to join us soon."
Mo Junjie fell quiet for an instant before affirming, "Understood."
Ending the conversation, Jin Xuyan dialed his fiancée’s number once more. This attempt was answered after just two rings.
"Captain, it’s Beiye speaking."
"How is Ah Zhi doing?"
"My sister is doing well. She’s asleep at the moment and expected to awaken within the hour."
Hearing this brought Jin Xuyan a wave of relief. "Beiye, please watch over your sister closely. Her teleportation ability might prove crucial soon."
"Captain, what’s the situation like there?" Du Beiye inquired.
"It’s dire. Zombie numbers are swelling continuously, and their assaults show clear coordination. I suspect at least six advanced zombies are directing them. Without such leadership, they couldn’t time their advances and withdrawals so precisely."
"Why not eliminate the leader zombies?"
"That’s easier said than done. The zombie horde is overwhelming. Venturing out to hunt the commanders would leave the base vulnerable to their onslaught."
Upon learning this, Du Beiye let out a heavy sigh. "Indeed, mutants are far outnumbered by the zombies."
Noticing her exasperation, Jin Xuyan let out a light laugh. "The real issue isn’t the numerical gap, but humanity’s inherent self-interest."
"Even amid peril, they persist in their plots and rivalries. Should humanity face extinction one day, it will stem from this very flaw."
Reflecting on humanity’s recorded past, Du Beiye agreed with a nod.
"I need to confer with Xun Che further. Once Ah Zhi awakens, have her reach out to me."
"Understood."
Concluding his talk with Du Beiye, Jin Xuyan placed yet another call.
"Old Jin, what’s the reason for your call? Has trouble arisen at Sanchou Base?"
"Old Xun, we require backup urgently. The zombie count exceeds 400,000, with reinforcements still arriving."
Xun Che was stunned by this revelation. Composing himself, he followed up, "What’s your mutant force like there?"
"Excluding my own squad, we have 478 mutants from the Mo family in total."
"And the ordinary people?" Xun Che pressed.
"Over 123,000 civilians are present, though they lack training in weaponry. Arming them with guns would merely squander bullets," Jin Xuyan lamented with a sigh.
"I see. I’ll dispatch my forces. Expect a delay of several hours."
No sooner had he spoken than a thunderous blast echoed from Jin Xuyan’s location. "What’s going on?"
Jin Xuyan hurried back to the wall, observing Qin Luzi clashing with multiple zombies aloft. "Military helicopters aren’t an option."
"Why not?"
"Certain zombies possess wind abilities. They can take to the skies and strike from above."
"Damn it all!" Xun Che exclaimed in frustration upon hearing this, astonished by the zombies’ escalating power.
"Old Jin, without helicopters, reaching Sanchou would require days. Can you endure that long?" he questioned.
"I’ve devised a solution for that issue. For the moment, just prepare the reinforcements. Additionally, include medical teams, physicians, and healers. Casualties are mounting heavily here, and the civilians’ conditions are worsening."
This news induced a throbbing headache in Xun Che, who replied, "Fine, I’ll exert every effort."
"Notify me once preparations are complete."
"Will do."
Upon ending the call, Jin Xuyan returned to his unit. Assuming leadership and engaging fiercely at the forefront, he drove the zombies back over 100 meters, allowing the Mo family mutants a brief respite.
Meanwhile, at the Lin’an City Base, Jiao Lizhi gradually came to her senses. Upon opening her eyes, she found herself in the familiarity of her personal bedroom.
Just as she propped herself upright, the door swung open, and Du Beiye stepped in carrying a tray. She set the meal down on the nightstand and suggested, "Sister, have some food first."
Jiao Lizhi inclined her head and sipped the water before beginning on the porridge. She didn’t need to inquire; she was certain her sister had discovered her in the subterranean storage.
Du Beiye pulled up a chair and positioned herself before her sibling. "What occurred? Why were you unconscious in that spot? Was it due to me triggering the system barrier?"
Jiao Lizhi denied it with a shake of her head. "That wasn’t the cause."
"Then what led to it?"
"The system severed the link to protect me."
