After breaking free from their trap, the Mo siblings note the absence of their Fifth Brother among the group. Jin Xuyan confronts Mo Junzi about their secret underground laboratory, pressuring the family to defend Sanchou Base or risk its destruction, prompting them to summon mutant reinforcements while the Phantom Team rests. Meanwhile, in Lin’an City Base, the team defeats the Matkuna Commander using Feng Zhen's blood ability, leaving him to collapse from exhaustion as Du Beiye carries him back amid the battle's aftermath.

The broadcast messages echoed multiple times.

Relatives and companions of the deceased mutants, upon hearing the news, were struck by profound sorrow. Even after surviving 300 days in the end times, they remained unable to adjust to witnessing their beloved ones lay down their lives to shield them.

In Xun Che’s office meanwhile, he was catching a brief nap when Shang Yuanling entered. Throughout the conflict, he managed just six hours of sleep each day.

As the leading Commander, he bore the responsibility of guiding the base and charging to the forefront. Despite Wen Hanli’s assistance in overseeing the rear support, he needed to oversee the entire operation.

Shang Yuanling settled into a chair next to him and set the thermal multi-layer meal containers on the low table. Gazing at him, she spotted the shadows beneath his eyes.

Observing his exhaustion, an unfamiliar emotion stirred within her chest. Heartache for him filled her. She lingered there for several minutes, then retrieved a cover to drape over him before departing.

Shortly after her exit, Xun Che lifted his eyelids and stared at the shut door. He released a deep breath and rubbed the spot between his eyes.

"What am I even hoping for?" he whispered to himself.

Once she departed from the Commander’s quarters, Shang Yuanling skipped heading back home. Amid the clash with the Matkuna species, she’d been assigned to watch over the supply operations.

Though aware that Xun Che arranged this for her protection, she yearned to safeguard her residence and those close to her heart. With the fight now concluded, she proceeded to sign up for assistance duties.

Spotting her, one guard offered a friendly greeting, "Comrade Shang, what brings you over?"

"I caught the broadcast and came to enlist. I wish to assist in the cleanup."

At these words, the guard paused briefly before inquiring, "Does the Commander know about this?"

Shang Yuanling’s brow furrowed at his question, and she replied, "Why must I seek the Commander’s approval?"

"Well, as the Commander’s close aide, you’re likely occupied with handling his everyday affairs."

"Comrade, no need to concern yourself. Signing on for the team won’t interfere with my duties."

With her insistence, the guard had no choice but to add her to the list. Once completed, Shang Yuanling linked up with the guards and ventured beyond the base.

As soon as her eyes fell on the sight ahead, her complexion drained of color. She had braced for the direst outcomes, yet the reality far exceeded her darkest thoughts.

The battlefield in her mind paled against the true horror.

Limbs torn apart and guts strewn everywhere met her gaze. The metallic tang of blood blended with a foul, corrosive odor, so overpowering that bile rose in her throat instantly.

Around her, the ordinary folk who had stepped forward to aid faced the same distress.

"Folks, take extra care while gathering the remains. Load all the insects’ bodies into the fuel barrels. For our fallen allies, use the body sacks."

The guard directed them as he monitored the tidying efforts.

As the Lin’an City Base gradually regained its footing after the assault, the zombie assaults on Sanchou Base only grew more intense.

Perched atop the barrier, Qin Luzi scanned the mental map and reported, "Captain, hordes from surrounding urban areas and villages are heading our way."

In response, Jin Xuyan’s features tightened as he declared, "We need to locate the zombie directing this swarm. Without that, despite our power, our odds of victory in this fight drop below 10%."

"Captain, perhaps you could shift to Lin’an City Base and fetch backup?" Di Hansheng suggested.

The team members voiced their support with nods. Jin Xuyan considered reaching out to his betrothed as well. However, the peril at Lin’an City Base was immense; absent Du Beiye, Mo Junjie, and his fiancée’s aid, the losses would mount disastrously.

While he weighed his choices, a chopper touched down on the roof landing zone of the highest structure.

Noticing it, Xiao Qi remarked in confusion, "Who would arrive here amid the zombie encirclement?"

Jin Xuyan arched his brows upon spotting the chopper’s emblem. "That’s the Mo family’s."

Once the rotors quieted, a man in his thirties emerged. His heavy coat billowed with the breeze. Adjusting his spectacles, he glanced toward the wall’s summit. From afar, he gave Jin Xuyan a slight bow.

"Captain, do you recognize him?" Zhang Yuan queried.

"He’s top in succession. Mo Junlong, the Mo family’s firstborn grandson," Jin Xuyan explained while eyeing the figure.

In his past existence, Mo Junlong ascended to lead the Mo family by the apocalypse’s twelfth year. His command elevated the Mo clan to supremacy among noble houses.

It was largely due to his efforts that Mo Junjie finished his studies without disruption, enhancing the Mo family’s standing even more.

Reflecting on those past events, a notion sparked in Jin Xuyan’s thoughts.

Addressing his squad, he instructed, "I’ll reach out to Xun Che and check for possible reinforcements. Meanwhile, our priority stays holding the base."
