After repeating the announcement multiple times, Qin Luzi and Feng Yun headed out to gather the members and head toward Sanchou Base.
During their journey, Xiao Qi suddenly sighed and remarked, "It seems our fame doesn't match that of the Lin’an City Base."
Upon hearing that, Zhang Yuan clapped his shoulder and laughed lightly. "You shouldn't compare our squad to an entire base. Over the recent months, Uncle Feng has focused on advertising the base and attracting new recruits. Our group handles tasks in the shadows, so it's expected that fewer folks recognize us."
Xiao Qi gave a nod and responded, "Vice Captain, got it."
Just ten minutes passed before the military helicopter touched down beyond the Sanchou Base entrance. Once the team disembarked, Feng Yun tucked the chopper into his storage space. The sight of the wall's state prompted uneasy looks among the members.
Jin Xuyan spotted the arriving members and signaled for them to climb up to the wall's summit. They leaped up sequentially and positioned themselves next to their leader.
In the following instant, Qin Luzi indicated the highest structure and stated, "Captain, that building holds 6 level four mutants. Apart from those, you've got roughly 500 level two mutants, plus over 1,000 level one mutants dispersed throughout the base area."
"And the civilians?" Jin Xuyan inquired.
Qin Luzi shook his head and explained, "No ordinary people remain. The ones concealed in buildings are fighters and level zero mutants."
Jin Xuyan nodded in acknowledgment upon hearing this. "Leave them be."
Next, he addressed his team and instructed, "Wen Kai, Wen Mo, Old Zhang, Ruanyi, Cheng Rui, and Cheng Yue—you all handle fixing and reinforcing the wall. Everyone else, divide into groups and remove the snow along with the zombies within the base."
"Got it," the team chorused together.
With the command issued, Jin Xuyan departed from the base to handle the cleanup of its outer perimeter. He possessed deep knowledge of the nearby terrain. As his comrades worked inside, he tackled the exterior tasks.
Sixty minutes in, the initial wave of survivors showed up. Spotting the 5-kilometer radius around the base free of snow and undead, a spark of optimism lit up their gazes.
Jin Xuyan wrapped up shoveling the final patch of snow just as vehicles and buses began streaming in greater numbers. He pulled out his mobile and dialed Zhang Yuan.
"Old Zhang, the refugees have arrived. Swing the gates wide."
"Roger that."
The sight of the imposing metal barrier filled the survivors with anxiety. Since that faction seized control, entry had been barred to all. Uncertainty lingered about whether the Phantom Team could sway those rulers' stance.
Endless worries of denial raced through their minds. Yet, prior to arriving at the entrance, the enormous, weighty doors creaked open before them.
With the portal swinging ajar, a youthful figure appeared there, arm extended upward. The scene suggested he'd triggered the opening himself. However, that barrier's mass demanded over 20 strong men to budge it swiftly.
Following his leader's directive, Wen Mo stood watch at the gateway. After triggering it, he vaulted to the wall's crest. From there, he observed the vehicles and transports filing into the base steadily.
Given the tight schedule, individual checks on the newcomers were skipped. Thanks to Qin Luzi and Pei Yixie's quick sweeps, spotting any carriers of infection proved straightforward.
As more refugees flooded through into the base, the Mo siblings observed from the topmost level.
"Second Brother, should we just let them proceed unchecked?" Mo Junhao questioned, brow furrowed.
"Eldest Brother is on his way, and he ordered us to hold position. So, everyone stays put here."
"Yet they're admitting folks without body searches. Imagine if carriers slip through—it could endanger us all," Mo Junhao countered, evidently displeased.
"That leader and his crew aren't ordinary. If he's permitting entry sans checks, he surely has measures to block any infected from getting inside," Mo Junzi affirmed.
Right after his statement, their eyes caught a girl atop the wall aiming at a middle-aged lady down below. Immediately after, a young fellow seized the woman and led her off.
Unclear was her destination, yet the woman's rigid motions revealed her infection plainly.
This very moment saw Fu Guai escorting the middle-aged woman away.
The lady quivered under his icy stare. Hastily, she tugged her sleeve down to hide the festering gash on her left arm.
Though her form had grown more rigid than a typical human's, full zombification hadn't claimed her yet. Awareness of her affliction gnawed at her, but denial gripped her fiercely.
Retreating a pace, she stammered, "W-what are you planning?"
Unwilling to dally, Fu Guai retrieved a vial of pond water from his pack. Before she could respond, he uncapped it and poured the contents into her mouth.
"Ugh!"
The woman thrashed in resistance, yet Fu Guai's grip on her head's nape immobilized her completely. Ultimately, she swallowed the full bottle, nearly gagging in the process.
"Cough! Cough! Cough!"
Once he'd made her ingest it, Fu Guai hauled the middle-aged woman toward the entrance once more.
At their arrival, Qin Luzi awaited them. He examined the woman briefly, then declared, "She remains at risk."
Fu Guai, upon that assessment, lifted her onto the wall's height.
Xiao Qi, noticing their approach, produced a cord and bound the woman securely.
