What Do You Mean I'm The Captain Of A Yandere Mercenary Company? Chapter 943: I Need To Pick Up More

I had to point at the fort for the dogs to run back towards it while I followed after them from behind.
Even then, they kept peeking behind to make sure I was following them or something and kept maintaining a set distance away from me to make sure I wasn’t too far away.
I eventually reached the fort again and landed in the centre while the dogs had to be put into the cages again under Nerissa’s guidance.
Well... Even though I said guidance, it really was just her placing the cages in the path and waiting for the dogs to move inside them.
The dogs also checked that I wanted them inside the cages and only stepped inside after I nodded at them.
I’m still wondering why they were able to tell it was me despite the fact that I was piloting an Exo-Knight inside the cockpit and not out there with them.
Landing my machine and powering it down, I let my senses return back to my original body before opening up the cockpit.
A handle popped out from the top of the frame, allowing me to grab onto it before it lowered me down to the floor beside my Exo-Knight’s foot.
Nerissa came up to me, looking quite relieved.
"Thank you..." She whispered, making sure no one else could hear us.
I raised an eyebrow at her, "What are you thanking me for?"
"I know you were guiding the... Dogs... Without you, they might still be trying to burrow after those creatures and ignoring any commands I might give... And... I don’t know if I could stop them from rampaging around if they really wanted to..."
She looked around and I only just noticed that everyone else inside the fort was keeping a really far distance from the cages and was also keeping their distance from Nerissa and myself, as though we were no better than the bugs they were killing just now.
Well... I guess they did just watch a group of a hundred dogs and an Exo-Knight tear through at least a hundred thousand or more of those bug aliens with ease while they were struggling just to hold them back with all the armaments they had.
Yeah... I think they are justified in their reactions...
"So what now?" I asked, looking at the land in front of the fort that was now completely filled with corpses of the bugs. "I don’t think the fight is over yet right?"
She made a face at me, "I’m not sure... I was only told to get the dogs to drive the bugs back if I could... I don’t know if they want me to bring the dogs down into the burrows as well... I sure hope they don’t... I don’t want to go down there..."
Right, I guess expecting her to know what the military was planning was also insensible of me. She’s technically a civilian that they brought out here for her specialisation of controlling the dogs and wasn’t a soldier nor was she even a Merc.
"I was honestly under the impression that I would be ferrying more dogs here instead of just stopping at a hundred."
She shuddered, "I’m quite sure that they were expecting casualties... Or they were intending on seeing how effective the dogs were before they decide if they want to commit more of them to the extermination here..."
I turned back to look at the empty land around the fort before turning back to her.
"I guess it was really effective, wasn’t it?"
She nodded, "It certainly was... And without a single casualty too... As expected of dogs..."
"I’m surprised they didn’t try to get a Psionic here though," I commented, more out of curiosity about what might be the reason why they didn’t than anything else.
Nerissa shuddered, "There’s no way any of those Nobles would even agree to set foot on a planet like this willingly. Even I was not willing to come here and I was simply forced to be here against my will..."
Well... Fair enough I guess... I’m also only here for the Bio-Weapons license which I sure hope this was already enough to get me qualified for it.
I would be so mad if they deny my request for it after I do this job for them.
As if on cue, one of the soldiers came running up to us, carrying some kind of device in his hands.
"Umm... Umm... The Admiral... Wishes to speak to you..." He stammered, looking like he would rather be anywhere else but in front of us.
Nevertheless, he still reached out his hand and allowed the device to project an image of the Admiral in the air, the man turning to face both me and Nerissa.
He gave a nod at us, "That was exemplary work. I admit I had my doubts when High Command decided to implement using those creatures as the base for this plan but... I am happy to see that I was wrong in doubting the effectiveness of this strategy. We will be building more surface defenses while those blasted things are still hiding underground and I have already placed requisition orders for another group of those creatures to be delivered here. Will you be able to go get them?"
Oh? So they really do want more of the dogs after all.
I turned back to give Nerissa a pointed look before turning back to the admiral, "So you want me to just fly all the way back there to get another group of dogs here? You sure this place can hold out long enough while we’re gone?"
He shook his head, "You’re mistaken. The Biotamer stays here with us, Merc. You’ll just be picking the things up in cages anyway, right? There shouldn’t be a problem. Just head to the outpost and have them load up your ship with them before coming back here with haste. With how well the things have sent those bugs packing, I’m sure they will be able to do it again on their own anyway."
I couldn’t help but feel a hitch in my chest as I turned back to look at Nerissa, the woman’s eyes also slowly widening as she understood the implication of that arrangement.
I would be away and Nerissa would be expected to command the dogs... Somehow.
The earlier attack was quite literally just her releasing them from their cages and hoping for the best.
I only realised it just now but because the dogs had recognised me, they were coordinating their attack with me which made it really effective as they covered each other and me to make sure those bug aliens could not reach me.
But if I wasn’t there... There was no saying how the dogs might react once they were let out of their cages.
The dogs might even just decide to turn around and start attacking the soldiers instead of the bugs, which might be something that had a really small chance of happening but the chance was still there.
And if a single dog decides to attack them... It might lead to full blown chaos.
Nerissa quickly stepped up, "Ad... Admiral... You have to know that... The dogs aren’t trained soldiers... They cannot be controlled... Under normal circumstances."
Her gaze shifted to me for a moment when she said that last part, clearly thinking that I was one of the unusual circumstances that would allow the dogs to be controlled.
She then looked back at the admiral, "You could say that the dogs behaving like this just now was nothing short of a miracle... This is not the standard behaviour of dogs..."
The admiral frowned, "Is it really that hard? We just move the cages outside the fort and if the bugs show up, we open them up and let them do their work. No one will need to be standing outside and risk their lives. That would work, wouldn’t it? And once they are done, you can just recall them back into their cages."
Nerissa hesitated, "That... Might be possible... But you have to understand that the dogs might not go back to their cages when called on... They might just completely ignore it or go chasing after the bugs instead... Or they could just decide that this fort is too noisy and jump over the wall to start biting some people..."
Hmmm... I couldn’t help but think that the last one was a joke but Nerissa had spoken with such deathly seriousness that I had to take that seriously.
The admiral seemed to consider her words for a moment before nodding his head, "I suppose that will have to be a risk that we have to deal with. We will leave those creatures as a last resort instead of our first. But if we intend to clear out this planet, I’m afraid that we would still need those reinforcements. Merc?"
I straightened myself, "I will do my best to deliver them here as soon as I can."
"Good. Let’s get to work then."
The communications shut off and the soldier quickly retreated away from us.
Nerissa was looking at me like I was leaving her to die and I made a face at her.
"Come on... If you hadn’t found out about me, you were prepared to come here and deal with it yourself too."
"That was before I realised how many of those bugs there were!" She seethed through gritted teeth.
Oh well... Err... All I can say is good luck?
I’ll try my best to come back as fast as possible, ok?
