After defeating the Bug Queen and her swarm, the mercenaries began collecting the Prisma Crystals. However, a new, humanoid bug emerged from the Queen's corpse. This creature, capable of speech and dodging bullets, proved a formidable opponent, even tearing off one of its own arms to escape Freyja's attack before disappearing into a hidden crevice.

Nayek turned to me and shook her head, "The people at the camp did not see that bug appear from the tunnel... That means that hole does not lead into the tunnels we used to come here."

I sighed, "Which also means that we have some humanoid bug flying around somewhere either above ground or still inside these tunnels doing god knows what..."

"Has this happened before?"

"No... This is the first time I’ve seen it as well... So either this is unique to this nest... Or the bugs have somehow evolved really quickly to create that bug after losing several nests. And that’s assuming all the bugs on the planet see themselves as the same species to begin with."

There was a pause before the Reaper spoke again, "Should we be worried about it then?"

"I don’t even know whether we should..." I admitted while looking up at the hole it had disappeared through. "It’s smart and probably stronger than the other bugs but... I don’t know how big of a threat it might be to the expedition."

Nayek looked up at the hole as well before shaking her head, "I don’t like this. It feels like we’re leaving a business unfinished. We should track it down and finish it off before it becomes a problem."

Amber chuckled from the side, "Easy for you to say. How do you think we can find it? If it’s hiding inside the tunnels, are you going to scour every corner for it? And if it fled the tunnels to the outside, do you want to search the entire planet for it? Do you even have a scanner that can find a single bug like that?"

That’s true... How would you even find a single bug when it has the entire planet to hide in?

If we had something that could track the bug, it would be a different case though.

Hmm... Track... Hmm...

I looked to the side to see the arm that Freyja had ripped off. Then I looked at Freyja who was just laying down at the side, watching everything attentively.

Ah... Why didn’t I think of that earlier?

I went over to pick up the torn off limb and brought it over to Freyja.

"Hey girl! Seek?" I asked, holding the bug’s limb out towards my doggo.

She perked up and her tail started wagging quickly as she got up to sniff the arm.

She then started sniffing the ground and bounded over to the entrance of the cavern and let out a howl before turning back towards me.

I grinned, "I think we just found our tracker girls. Let’s go. We’ll handle it, Nayek."

The Reaper took a look at my dog and gave a nonchalant shrug, though I have a feeling she was just hiding her relief at knowing my dog was going to leave this place and she didn’t need to worry about Freyja anymore.

My girls gathered their things and followed after me, all of us running after Freyja who was more than happy to lead us to where she caught the scent of the bug.

We ran past the other people from the Reaper group that were busy clearing out the corpses and preparing the machines needed to mine the crystals, ignoring their perplexed looks as we ran past.

Interestingly, Freyja did not lead us out of the tunnels through the same route that we took to get in there. She turned down another tunnel when we reached the junction with the alternate paths and started running down that tunnel instead.

This was a place we had never been to before but she was leading us confidently through them like she had been here a hundred times.

As we ran past another junction, I realised there was a hole in the ground which was undoubtedly linked to the Queen’s chambers and most likely where that humanoid bug had burrowed out of to appear up here.

And after another turn, I found that this tunnel led to the surface of the planet.

That place was barren as far as the eye could see and there were no signs of that humanoid bug anywhere.

Considering the fact that the bug could fly, it must have taken to the air the moment it came out here.

Tsk... So it’s quite possible that the trail might be cut off here I suppose...

At least... That’s what I thought until I saw Freyja running over towards a certain direction and sniffing the air before barking in that direction in particular.

You’re telling me she can still smell it even though it has flown up into the air? Just how good is her sense of smell?

I looked back at my girls and none of them even looked surprised. They were just waiting for me to give the order.

We don’t know how far that bug was going to fly after all. For all we know, it might be flying to the other side of the planet and we would just be stupidly following after it on the ground.

"Do you think Freyja can smell it while we’re flying?"

Lea tilted her head at me, "Mistress... It’s a dog. It can do anything."

I’m pretty sure my Alv is just being sarcastic here but I chuckled nevertheless.

"Right, Renata... Get Mara to pack up and be ready to leave. Fly the Verlandi over to us in the meantime. We’ll return back to our Exo-Knights and I’ll let her sniff it out from the air."

I’m not even sure if this will work but it beats just walking there and then finding out later we need to walk several kilometers just to get to where the bug was. And then it would be even more stupid if it just flew away again immediately once we caught up to it.

Granted, Amber, Mara and I could just fly after it and we could even carry everyone else along with us as well, but then questions might come later if people asked how we managed to cover that distance in such a short time.

We didn’t have to wait long before the Verlandi came down to land in front of us. Ries was already geeking out at it and marvelling at my ship despite the fact that she does maintenance on it almost every day.

But then...

"Wahhhhh?!!! What? What, what, what?!! Wait... Wait, wait!!! That... That... That’s a Verlandi?!!!" Patricia screamed.

Oh... Err... I just realised I didn’t really show her the hangar bay so she never saw the ships being stored there.

So despite spending several days on the ship, she actually hasn’t seen my Verlandi before.

I guess she’s just like Ries and also saw the ship as an icon so she was really excited about it. I should have expected that since I already knew she was a gamer and a geek to begin with.

She was now also geeking out alongside Ries, which was actually a funny sight to see considering one was in a large Power Armour strapped with all kinds of weapons and the other was a smaller remote controlled Power Armour and both of them were hopping around my ship excitedly.

They were very cute.

We got on the ship and I answered Patricia’s questions about the ship as much as I could, including how I got the ship and whether it was the reason why I could beat her in the game since I have a real Verlandi as reference on how the ship worked.

I let her explore the ship with Ries and promised her that she could explore the ship with her real self instead of the suit once we returned back to the Iridescence.

We touched down back at the Reaper’s base camp and proceeded to board our Exo-Knights with Freyja coming with me.

I was thinking that she would jump into the cockpit with me where I would leave the cockpit doors open but she just jumped onto my Exo-Knight’s shoulder and laid herself there casually.

Guess she didn’t need to be inside the cockpit since we weren’t flying into space anyway...

Mara boarded the Verlandi and we took off with me in the lead.

Freyja hopped over on my palm and I flew us back to where we had found the other entrance to the tunnel, letting Freyja sniff it out for a moment before she barked again, pointing her snout in a specific direction.

I followed her direction and started flying there, maintaining a slow speed so that the trail doesn’t get lost from the wind.

Freyja didn’t have any problems tracking it at all and even made me turn a few times which meant the bug most likely was also turning in the air, almost like it was doing so to shake off pursuers.

Still, it did not work as we eventually flew over a ridge and... Found ourselves right on top of another bug nest.

Shit... Did it lead us to a trap? Or did it fly here to warn this nest of our presence and the fact that its own nest was destroyed?

Either way... Are we going to destroy this nest too?
