The Reapers brought heavy artillery, including combat mechs and a spider tank, to clear the tunnels. After a brief discussion, Nayek decided to lead Assault Team A to confront the Bug Queen directly while the rest of the forces held back the horde. The allied forces pushed through the cavern, systematically eliminating the bugs. The protagonist's group, along with Freyja and Yumiko, then carved a path to the final tunnel leading to the Queen's chamber.

The hive Queen stood absolutely no chance.

Nayek did not waste time gloating or even figuring out anything about the Queen.

The moment they entered the nest chambers, she immediately gave the order to open fire and all of them blasted the Queen to bits.

And once the Bug Queen was dead, the other bugs died along with her.

All of us watched as the broken corpse of the Bug Queen crashed down on the cavern floor, leaving the entire cavern full of Prisma Crystals ripe for the taking.

Nayek lowered her gun that was still smoking at the barrel before turning to me, "All of them die after the Queen dies, correct?"

I nodded, "That’s right."

"Good. Kale, call in the extraction team. Have them start gathering the bodies and mining the crystals. The rest of you, I want this place secured and prepared for the extraction team."

It was quite a sight to see them suddenly switch gears like that.

One moment all of them were tensed up and shooting down bugs like their life depended on it, the next thing they were taking out what looked like lights sticks and tarp which they used to gather materials from the slain bugs.

Heck, even the combat bots were helping out too, all of them working to start moving the corpses of the bugs aside.

"You’re going to start a mining operation down here?" I asked.

Nayek turned to me, "Of course? It’s part of the contract, isn’t it? You did ask for a percentage of the mined crystals too. Ah... You didn’t think we already brought mining rigs down here did you? Yeah, we were fully prepared for this before we came down to the planet’s surface."

Huh... Basically she’s saying that they have already come here fully expecting the expedition to be a success and were prepared for it.

I’m not sure if that was a sign of their confidence in themselves or in us that this would not fail.

She nodded at me, "You can return to the camp if you want. Though we won’t say no to more help either."

I turned to Ries, figuring that she would want a say in this.

My Maochatte understood me quickly and came forward, "I wanna help, Boss! Let me help!"

I gestured towards the cavern, "Go ahead then. Anyone else, feel free. As for the others, we’ll head back to the surface and clean the equipment."

I really don’t want to stay here longer than we need to since this place was piled high with the corpses of bugs and no doubt stank badly because of it.

It’s only because of Renata covering me that I didn’t need to worry about all the blood and gore but I want to give Freyja a bath as soon as possible lest all that blood and entrails of the bugs get permanently stuck to her fur.

As we were turning away to leave however, I sensed sudden movement coming from the corpse of the Queen Bug.

I spun back around, prompting the others to look at me and wonder why I stopped before turning to see what I was looking at.

From the Queen’s corpse, the part where I assume was its thorax started to expand like there was something inside trying to push itself out of its body.

The surface then cracked open to reveal a humanoid shaped bug with four arms and two legs as well as two pairs of wings on its back.

Its shape kind of made it look like it was a rhinoceros beetle except it was thinner and obviously humanoid instead of a bug.

Its limbs cracked audibly as it stretched its arms out, like it had just woken up from a deep sleep.

Nayek pulled out her gun and fired at it, aiming for the kill as her bullet sailed straight towards its head.

The bug showed surprising dexterity as it tilted its head to the side, avoiding the bullet without much effort.

"Tera?" Nayek called out, maintaining her aim on the new bug.

The others around the cavern also did the same, pulling out their weapons to train them at the new bug.

"This has never happened before. This situation is completely new," I answered her, lifting up my own cannons as well.

The humanoid bug tilted its head the other way while it looked at us through its compound eyes.

It felt like we were being watched by a predator deciding how exactly it wanted to hunt us.

The bug then clicked its mandibles together, "K... Ki... Kill..."

If I had a Credit for each time we encountered bugs that learned how to talk... I would have two Credits. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it has happened twice.

"Do I need to ask?" Nayek muttered, her weapon still pointed at the bug.

"One of the nest we attacked... Some of the bugs learned how to speak our language and tried to use it against us. I suppose this one was the same," I answered her.

"Then there’s no need for hesitation... Shoot it!!"

Everyone in the cavern opened fire on the bug, sending a hail of kinetic rounds shooting at that humanoid beetle.

Even under that onslaught, the bug did not panic and it started to sway left and right.

Somehow, it could see the trajectories of the bullets and avoided all of them no matter how we were shooting at it.

Ries even lobbed in a mortar shell for good measure and it literally reached out one of its hands and smacked against the shell with the back of its hand, deflecting it off to the side to explode behind it.

Some of the Reapers ended up emptying their magazine and moved to reload, which created a lull in the shooting.

The humanoid bug suddenly crouched down low and flared its wings before leaping up into the air and landing on the ceiling upside down.

It then kicked off the ceiling and went straight towards the Reapers that were in the middle of reloading their guns.

So it managed to figure out that those guys were vulnerable because their weapons were not ready? I suppose I should have expected a bug that learned how to speak to have some kind of intelligence.

It was just about to reach a pair of those Mercs when Yumiko appeared in front of them, her swords slashing out in a cross shape in front of her.

Her blades clashed against its claws which gave off a metallic sounding clang from the exchange.

The impact had sent the bug flying back a short distance but it immediately flared its wings and propelled itself forward in a burst of speed, trying to catch Yumiko while she was still reeling from the impact and unable to defend herself properly.

I saw her smirking at the bug despite her precarious position and the reason for that appeared from behind her.

Freyja used Yumiko’s position to hide herself and rushed out towards the bug, her jaws opened wide and fully prepared to rip the bug apart.

Unfortunately, it seemed like the bug managed to react in time and quickly pulled itself back.

Despite that, it did not escape fully unscathed as Freyja managed to close her jaws around one of its arms and tore it off.

All of us watched as the bug leapt a good distance back, now with three arms instead of four.

Freyja let out a growl and chewed on the left arm she bit off before dropping it in disappointment

She then stalked forward to put distance between our group and herself, standing in front of us protectively and making it clear that this was her fight.

Well... Seems like no one on our side was going to argue with that as even the Reapers lowered their weapons and were focused on watching instead of participating.

Freyja let out a growl and took another step forward, clearly challenging the humanoid bug.

The bug also seemed to recognise the challenge and took a step forward, its arms stretching out menacingly as it looked prepared to dash forward to engage Freyja in close combat.

Everyone was holding their breaths as the two creatures stared at each other and the only sound that could be heard was the sound of our hearts pounding in our chest and the distant shuffling of the other Reapers moving the corpses outside of the Bug Queen’s chambers.

Without warning, both Freyja and the humanoid bug rushed forward towards each other.

I watched Freyja dash towards the bug while it chose to launch itself forward by kicking off the ground to fly towards my dog.

Freyja then kicked off the ground and lunged at the bug, her jaws opened wide once more and...

The bug suddenly changed directions and flew up towards the ceiling, disappearing into a crevice that we didn’t even notice it was there until now.

...

...

Did that fucker just run away?!!
