Shubnalu learns that the Mother of Thorns and the Willow Witch have taken the Thistle Witch. He also learns that Little Nyrielle is gathering recruits for an army to fight humans and has taken Savis and Tausau with her. Shubnalu orders Answaen to travel to the Vale of Mists the long way, instructing her to destroy it and use the Tuscans and remnants of Answaen's people to achieve the goal within a year. He also states his continued desire for the Thistle Witch, even if she is with the Mother of Trees, and implies he will choose a new candidate if she dies.
