The Kingmaker System Chapter 757 - 756. Better Sooner Than Later (2)
Previously on The Kingmaker System...
Issyrha had returned to the human kingdom on Reina’s word so that her people wouldn’t be worried about her. Issyrha had let Kai and Reina’s close confidants know of her condition the moment she returned and though they had seemed worried at first they were relieved to know that Reina was doing well.
After that she had left to stay at Eldarf since she had another purpose now. To get stronger.
The youngest had nearly sacrificed every drop of her mana to save the world and probably had also prevented her fight with the Demon Lord alone.
Issyrha knew Gluttony from the days of the Great War so, she knew while Gluttony was one of the seven Demon Lords who could easily ravage the world when descended it was still another thing to enter the space where they were banished to.
Nefrakar.
Just like the Demon Lords, even uttering the name of that place was a bad omen.
That was why both Issyrha and Caelthir had yet to let Reina know about their enemy.
The ones whose names must never be spoken out loud for it reaches them and if one isn’t careful, it might even invoke them.
The process was needlessly easy which was why every record and memory of these Demon Lords were erased so that no human even by mistake would summon them.
In general, people knew of the demons but not the seven Lords who commanded the forces. The seven vices were one thing but each Demon Lord had a unique title. If one were to utter the name and the title of the Demon Lord. The Demon Lord would be invoked and though weak at first, the Demon Lord would establish connection, eventually finding their way to earth.
It was for this reason that centuries ago, the great sacrifice was made. The sacrifice that would erase even the names and memory of these forsaken beings so that they would never be summoned. The sacrifice would be in effect until their King- the Devil was sealed away.
Once that seal broke, the Demon Lords would find enough power to find their way on earth.
But then again, there were still loopholes as these creatures were extremely cunning and tricky. And the witches and warlocks who had gained insight could find a way to connect to these Lords.
At the moment the Summoning Portal opened to physically allow Gluttony on earth, Issyrha knew she had to go to the place where these beings lived to spare the utter destruction of the living world. She was ready to do everything in her power to avoid sacrificing unnecessary lives.
However, Reina had stopped her from doing that. Issyrha wondered if Reina thought it was a meaningless fight in the first place that’s why she had stopped her from going to Nefrakar or whether she thought that Issyrha might just be in the way of her plan that’s why she had stopped her.
Regardless, the youngest one’s plan had worked. The world was saved.
But the questions of what Reina was thinking and how she managed to do everything almost on her own still nagged Issyrha. Other than that, she also came to realise that after slumbering for so long, she wasn’t as fluid in her movements as she was during the war. She needed to start training again.
And she was just sowing that when the young human had suddenly intruded. His presence had angered her but the moment she heard that he was the youngest’s lover Issyrha couldn’t help but see similarities between Reina and Solcarion. She wondered if it was a norm for the Dragon Gods to be so inclined towards humanity.
For the present, Issyrha watched Kai heal Davian who had passed out after sustaining internal injuries because of her Presence.
"K-Kin Issyrha, did you really have to go so hard against him?" Kai chided.
Issyrha simply shrugged her shoulders without an answer while Davian slowly came to his senses.
Back on Edrisyl, the night had just begun to darken further, the people exhausted from the ordeal of the night earlier had found peace since the townships and their houses were being mended. They had been temporarily allowed to live within the palace’s perimeter surrounded by the glowing wisterias that had grown back again after the new World Tree grew.
Unlike the old pale violet wisterias though, these wisteria gleaned azure blue under the moonlight. The ebb and flow of mana streamed through them maintaining the similar kind of barrier that spread all around the island for the protection of the new World Tree.
Reina had only managed to fall asleep for a while before she found herself standing in a dark cave. She was still in her young child’s form, which she had started getting adjusted to. She couldn’t gain anything by resistance or frustration so, it was better to adapt and live like this until her recovery was finished.
The air around her smelled of earth and there was a faint pulsing mana sensation.
Reina recalled being in the similar cave before, but for some reason she couldn’t remember.
She walked further without thinking much, hoping to see what lay ahead.
After walking down the narrow space between the walls covered in dark roots, she managed to reach in a hollow cavern.
Reina looked around the space, despite it being pitch black and her missing her Dragon’s senses, she was able to see everything clearly.
"Something’s missing?" She murmured to herself.
She glanced at the roots that snaked from all around the walls towards the one spot but instead of converging into a form of a mass, they just stopped there.
It was then that Reina recalled what was missing and why this place seemed familiar.
She had been here before, when she visited Edrisyl for the very first time. She was summoned to this very place back then.
"Yggdrasil." The name slipped through her lips.
"."
Reina almost jumped out of her skin feeling the ancient feminine sound reverberating from behind her.
She turned around finding the hologram-like transparent image of the Yggdrasil’s heart hovering before her. Her form was just as Reina remembered seeing the last time. The figure hovering amid the green mist with long green vines for hair, dress that seemed to have been made of earth. Brown face with a gentle, motherly expression with glowing emerald green eyes.
Seeing her again like this made Reina feel a little guilty, she had after all destroyed Yggdrasil without any hesitation.
"I..."
Reina couldn’t bring herself to say anything, she knew excuses made no difference but then again, there was no other choice back then.
"" Yggdrasil said.
".."
Reina lifted her eyes to meet with the brilliantly glowing emerald ones.
".."
The unmistakable melancholic sound seeped through her words eventually which Reina caught quickly.
""
A smile deepened the lines on the face of the Divine beauty.
"."
She raised her arm gently touching Reina’s cheek.
""
Reina opened her mouth at that time, driven mostly by the guilty she felt.
"But... I burned you... How could you say thank you to me?"
Yggdrasil smiled, leaning closer.
"" she said, ""
Reina opened her mouth but then the words that she had received back then as a reason echoed on her head.
"Every ending... brings a new beginning."
"."
Yggdrasil’s large palm cupped Reina’s round cheek which grew flushed as she failed to try and control her emotions. Her eyes slowly started turning red with tears welling up.
""
Reina sniffled wiping her tears while the fresh ones kept flowing.
Yggdrasil drew closer until Reina felt the ground leaving her feet and the gentle but fragile seeming presence enveloping around her. She felt the faint pulsing mana pressing against her body.
""
Reina continued crying in the surprisingly warm embrace, not realising that she was actually dreaming.
Caelthir had silently slipped into Reina’s room. He watched her for a long moment, his gaze settling on the tears that continued to slide down her cheeks despite the peaceful expression on her sleeping face.
He reached out and gently wiped one away.
His expression softened.
"I allow you to enter our youngest’s dreams and you make her cry, Yggdrasil. How rude."
