"I am going to fight them." Ran Lei declared, his body tensing as if to charge forward.
However, Ming Guang quickly pulled him back.
"They mentioned exchanging Princess Ahyang, but did they specify the location for this exchange?" Gu Qingheng directed his question to Arang.
"Misty Forest," Arang replied.
"And where exactly is Misty Forest?" Gu Qingheng pressed further.
"I know the place." Ran Lei, having regained some composure, added, "But even if we know the location, what good does it do? They demand the Miaojiang King’s Seal, which I do not possess."
"We must go regardless," Gu Qingheng stated, his expression as placid as still water. "Perhaps the clues there will lead us to something even more significant." Although the headquarters of the Flame Sect were deeply entrenched within Miaojiang Mountain, the local populace revealed a surprising lack of knowledge regarding its precise location. This suggested an exceptionally well-hidden site or one heavily fortified, which would undoubtedly consume considerable time to locate even if they were to find it. This current predicament, therefore, presented a unique opportunity.
Misty Forest was rumored to lie deep within Miaojiang Mountain, perpetually shrouded in a toxic mist. Towering ancient trees dominated the landscape, and the black mist permeated the forest so densely that navigation became impossible upon entry, rendering it a place from which return was highly unlikely.
"We are nearing Misty Forest," Ran Lei announced, crouching atop a sizable boulder on the mountainside and gesturing downward. "The perpetual black mist within is poisonous, and there isn't a single bird or even a person to be found around here. Consequently, no one has any idea what lies within."
The group followed Ran Lei's gaze towards the indicated direction, their vision met only by an impenetrable expanse of thick mist. Even from their elevated position, the forest's interior remained obscured, revealing only a dense congregation of countless towering trees.
A sense of unease settled over everyone, with the sole exception of Gold, who was palpably thrilled. If not for the strict orders to remain by his master's side, he would have already plunged into the forest, eager to explore the very poisons that made his mouth water.
Gu Qingheng gently stroked Gold's head.
Gold could only lie dejectedly on Gu Qingheng's arm, swallowing his salivation.
"Wait here, all of you. I will go scout ahead," Gu Qingheng announced, his gaze sweeping over the others as he stood, preparing to descend.
"I will accompany you," Qi Jingyun said, reaching out to grasp his arm.
"Are you not concerned about the poison?" Gu Qingheng inquired, his brow arching slightly.
"While I may not possess your immunity to all poisons, it is always beneficial to have someone watching your back," Qi Jingyun replied earnestly.
"I appreciate your concern," Gu Qingheng responded, shaking his head. "However, this is not the opportune moment for bravado." He then addressed the rest of the group: "None of you are to object. I am the only one here immune to the toxic atmosphere. My intention is merely to survey the situation. Should I encounter danger, I possess the means to escape. But if I do not return by Tianhei, you are to withdraw immediately."
"General!" Gu Qiao exclaimed, his expression furrowed.
"That is an order," Gu Qingheng stated sternly, his face darkening.
Gu Qiao fell silent, accepting the command.
Without further ado, Gu Qingheng crouched down and began to move stealthily towards the forest. However, the moment he initiated his movement, a figure swiftly materialized before him.
"Senior, please turn back!" Gu Qingheng admonished, frowning at Ming Guang.
Ming Guang let out a chuckle. "I shall accompany you. I am not afraid of the poison."
Recognizing the man's resolute nature, Gu Qingheng offered no further protest.
The two descended the slope in silence. Upon reaching the forest's edge, they found a patch of barren ground, almost entirely devoid of vegetation. The soil itself was a deep black, making it blend seamlessly with the surrounding flora. It would have been nearly impossible to detect from a distance, requiring one to be quite close.
