With the Flame Sect's activity subsiding, Gu Qingheng, after careful deliberation, resolved to confront the danger head-on.
Among their company, Gu Qingheng possessed complete immunity to all toxins. Gu Qiao and the others followed, not entirely immune but significantly more resistant due to their prolonged use of Dao Xuzi's medicinal pills, rendering them largely impervious to common miasmas and poisons.
Zhou Jiang assumed the mantle of commander temporarily, with the Eighth and Tenth Princes offering their support.
That evening, Gu Qingheng, accompanied by Gu Qiao, Zhang Tiankuo, and Ming Guang, set forth. Qi Jingyun brought two guards, and under the guidance of Ran Lei and Arang, they plunged back into the treacherous forests of Miaojiang.
Gu Qingheng, being generous, distributed another batch of antidote pills to everyone.
Ayang had expressed a desire to join the expedition, but Jin Bao, still too young to withstand the rigors of the journey, remained at the camp.
The vastness of Miaojiang was immense. Attempting to locate a single individual or a group within such an expansive, untamed wilderness was akin to finding a needle in a colossal haystack.
Fortunately, Ran Lei and Arang were intimately familiar with the treacherous terrain. After a brief assessment, they managed to pinpoint the probable location of the Flame Sect's central base.
"Every time Flame visited the leader previously, he departed from that direction," Ran Lei deduced with growing conviction. "He wouldn't take a longer route because the mountains on the other side are too formidable; even with exceptional Qinggong, crossing them would be impossible." He added, "It takes approximately an hour from the moment a message is delivered to reach the leader's tribe."
"Then, let us proceed to investigate," Gu Qingheng decided without hesitation.
The group swiftly traversed the dense forest, guided by Ran Lei and Arang, skillfully avoiding numerous pitfalls, treacherous swamps, and noxious miasmas.
"The leader's former village lies just ahead," Ran Lei announced, gesturing from a hillside vantage point. "However, it has since been reduced to ruins," he conveyed with a mournful tone.
Gu Qingheng offered a comforting pat on Ran Lei's shoulder.
Throughout their journey, they had witnessed countless villages razed to the ground, some even bearing the grim remnants of skeletons – all casualties of the Flame Sect's destructive rampage.
"Let's press onward," Ran Lei quickly regained his resolve. "By eradicating the Flame Sect, we shall bring justice to all who have suffered."
"Master Lei, our village is situated beyond that mountain," Arang whispered. "Allow me to scout ahead and assess the situation."
Ran Lei cast a glance back at Gu Qingheng.
"We shall proceed together," Gu Qingheng suggested after a moment's thought. "Should we encounter any Flame Sect members, we can provide mutual support."
Ran Lei readily agreed.
Thus, the party quickly made their way towards the Huaka Tribe.
Despite appearing close, the mountain peak required nearly two hours of travel, even utilizing Qinggong to ascend.
"Why is it so eerily silent?" Ran Lei expressed a sense of unease. "The village is right here, yet where has everyone vanished to?"
Suddenly, Blackhead, the wolf-dog, perked its ears, emitted a low growl, and darted swiftly to the side.
"There's someone over there," Ran Lei urged, following the dog's lead.
"It's Master Lei!" a short, dark-skinned man exclaimed, leaping down from a nearby tree.
Soon, more figures emerged – members of the tribe, who then surrounded an elderly man as they approached.
"Grandfather," Ran Lei exclaimed, hurrying to the elder's side, "Where are my father and mother?"
"Alei, you should not have returned," the old man lamented, shaking his head at his grandson. "They were all taken by the people of the Flame Sect."
