Yong Cang's injuries were quite severe. Even after receiving a unique medicinal pill from Dao Xuzi, he did not stir until the evening of the following day. A quick survey of his surroundings confirmed his safety, and a glance at his treated wounds brought a sigh of relief.
Just then, the door creaked open, and a man entered. Upon seeing Yong Cang's eyes open, a smile spread across his face. "You're awake?"
"Is this the Yang Family residence?"
"Weren't you seeking the Yang Family?" Miao Jian inquired, his brow furrowing slightly.
"Yes," Yong Cang replied hastily, a smile forming. "And your madam?" He attempted to rise, only to find himself too weak to support his own weight.
"The madam stated that even upon waking, you require several days of rest in bed," Miao Jian explained, placing the bowl of porridge he carried down. "It would be best not to exert yourself. Aggravating your injuries would be quite troublesome."
Yong Cang immediately reclined, murmuring, "Thank you."
"My name is Miao Jian. I am the butler here," Miao Jian announced as he moved to help Yong Cang sit up. "Have something to eat." Yong Cang was indeed famished and downed the porridge in a few swift gulps.
Yang Ruxin came for a stroll shortly after dinner.
"You... you are about to give birth?" Yong Cang observed Yang Ruxin’s noticeably swollen belly, a complex emotion stirring within him. He recalled her being married during his last visit, and now, seeing her again, she was on the verge of motherhood. Alas, any hope he held for her seemed lost.
Of course, not entirely lost. A sliver of hope remained if Gu Qingheng were to pass away and she became a widow, though the chances were exceedingly slim.
"I believe there are about two months remaining," Yang Ruxin said, her hand gently stroking her belly, a blissful smile gracing her features.
"Your belly is so large!" Yong Cang's eyes widened. "I've seen women nearing their delivery date, and their bellies weren't this prominent. Could it be twins?"
"Yes," Yang Ruxin confirmed with a slight nod. "If all proceeds as expected, there should be three."
"That's wonderful!" Yong Cang's expression held a hint of envy.
"Ouch!" Yang Ruxin suddenly winced slightly.
"What is it?" Yong Cang asked, startled.
Chai Qin also hurried to her side.
"It's nothing," Yang Ruxin quickly reassured them, shaking her head. "The little ones are expressing their opinions."
"What do you mean?" Yong Cang was perplexed.
"There should be three in my belly, assuming all goes well. You mentioned two, and I agreed, so the little ones are making a fuss about it," Yang Ruxin explained with a laugh.
At that very moment, a small bulge appeared on her abdomen, followed shortly by another in a different spot. These movements did not seem to cause Yang Ruxin any discomfort.
Her prominent belly was quite visible beneath her light summer attire.
Yong Cang tilted his head, gazing at Yang Ruxin’s abdomen, and a smile touched his lips. He found the sight miraculous and felt a strong desire to reach out and touch it. However, he knew such a request would be improper, so he could only clench his hands tightly beneath the blanket.
"Gu Qingheng is truly fortunate."
Yang Ruxin met his gaze briefly.
Yong Cang, attempting to conceal his emotions, averted his eyes and looked up at the ceiling.
"You should find a wife and start a family. That would bring you great happiness as well."
Yong Cang let out a sigh. Did he even have the time for such pursuits now? Furthermore, could he find a woman as capable as she was?
"Isn't it time we discussed how you sustained those injuries and ended up here?" Yang Ruxin shifted from pleasantries to the main topic. "I saved you because of our arrangement, but I do not wish to invite further complications upon myself."
