Hao Jian awkwardly rubbed the back of his head. "Indeed, a little."
"Then what about after another four hours? Or three whole days of hunger?"
Hao Jian's eyes widened as he suddenly grasped the concept. "I understand now! Isn't this just the principle that what you can't have is always the most desired?"
"More or less," she replied.
"Got it! I'll go tell the beast right away!" Hao Jian exclaimed before hurrying off.
As May ushered in sweltering heat, signaling the season for lighter summer attire, Chai Qin and Yang Xiong made their return. They had been out investigating the Shen Family.
"Madam, the mission is complete," Chai Qin announced, her voice brimming with energy despite a noticeable tan.
"The Shen Family is truly despicable," Yang Xiong added, his tone tinged with indignation.
"Thank you for your hard work." Yang Ruxin examined the collected evidence, a cold glint entering her eyes. The Shen Family's audacity in plotting against her husband meant they were inviting her wrath. With this proof, the Shen Family's downfall was almost certain, provided the Emperor didn't show undue favoritism.
"Madam, what are our next steps?" Chai Qin inquired, looking to Yang Ruxin for direction.
"What happens next is no longer our concern," Yang Ruxin stated with a smile. "Yang Xiong, I require your assistance once more. Please deliver this to the Crown Prince." She handed over a portion of the evidence. "Ensure you present it to the Crown Prince personally."
Accepting the evidence, Yang Xiong exchanged a brief glance with Chai Qin before bowing and departing.
"Madam, why aren't you handing over all the evidence?" Chai Qin asked, a touch of confusion in her voice.
"Shen Wanxing has been operating for many years," Yang Ruxin scoffed. "We cannot expect to achieve victory in a single strike; a two-pronged strategy is necessary."
Chai Qin's brow furrowed.
"The evidence in Yang Xiong's possession isn't sufficient to utterly destroy the Shen Family, but it's enough to incur the Emperor's displeasure and sow seeds of suspicion," Yang Ruxin explained, her gaze fixed on Chai Qin. "At that point, Shen Wanxing will be preoccupied with self-preservation. Presenting the remaining evidence then will deliver a severe blow to the Shen Family and likely displease the Emperor further."
"But wouldn't it be the same if you gave it all to the Crown Prince now?"
Yang Ruxin shook her head. "The Crown Prince must consider numerous factors before taking any decisive action."
Chai Qin's frown deepened, though she couldn't fully grasp the nuances. Still, she refrained from further questioning, her admiration for the madam's astute methods unwavering.
In the blink of an eye, May 16th arrived. Luo Qiaoqiao bid farewell to her father and second uncle, embarking on her marriage to Ma Laiwang.
Although Luo Qiaoqiao was not being 'sold,' Yang Ruxin generously prepared a dowry of two hundred taels of silver for her.
Despite the Ma Family's efforts to tidy their home, Ma Laiwang opted not to bring his new bride to the family's ancestral residence. Instead, after commencing his work at the medicinal wine distillery, he requested a small courtyard from Yang Ruxin.
Nevertheless, the wedding ceremony itself was conducted at the old family house.
While the Ma Family elders deemed this slightly unorthodox, they understood the reasoning. The Ma residence emitted an odor worse than a pigsty, a smell only Ma Qiang and Ma Laiwang had become accustomed to; anyone else would be overwhelmed by the stench.
In honor of their son's wedding, some attempt was made to clean the house, but the improvement was minimal.
Although Yang Ruxin could not attend personally due to her advanced pregnancy making travel inconvenient, Erni, who was present, recounted that upon entering the premises, she had to turn away and vomit. Many guests didn't even make it past the doorway.
Regardless of the circumstances, Ma Laiwang had finally tied the knot.
Three days after the wedding, Luo Qiaoqiao and Ma Laiwang paid a special visit to pay their respects to Yang Ruxin. Their demeanor suggested a harmonious and contented union.
