Ayang decides to leave tonight with Jin Bao, disguised as a couple with a child. Ran Lei agrees to help, but his brother, Ran Guang, arrives with dire news: the Flame Sect has massacred nearby tribes and is heading their way. Ran Guang arranges for an escort, Arang, to guide Ayang and Jin Bao out of the danger zone.

Perched on a mountainside, three individuals took a respite on a large rock. The month was February, and while Jiangbei began to experience a warming trend, their current location in the south was already considerably warmer. Consequently, the youngest of the group utilized a bamboo hat to generate a cooling breeze. Beside him, an elder with hair as white as snow sipped water from a gourd, while the third, armed with a twig, engaged in poking an ant nest on the ground. A bamboo basket rested near them, cradling a white fox within its confines.

"We've scoured the slopes and valleys over there, and nothing unusual has surfaced," the old man remarked after finishing his drink and re-corking the gourd. "Do you suppose it's possible that it isn't located in these mountains?" They had indeed encountered members of the Flame Sect, yet they saw no sign of the Medicinal Soldiers, nor any indication of individuals being held captive.

The younger man vehemently shook his head. "It must be within these mountains." Without this possibility, they had no other place to conceal individuals.

"Very well, this old man regrets accompanying you," the white-haired elder declared, rising to his feet. "If only Xinxin were here. When we get out of here, I intend to return home." This individual was none other than Dao Xuzi, currently in disguise.

"Not going back," Ming Guang stated, pausing his activity of prodding the ant nest as he glanced towards Dao Xuzi.

"It's perfectly fine for you to accompany this kid," Dao Xuzi responded with a shrug.

"I miss Xinxin too," Gu Qingheng added, also standing up. "She is pregnant, and I wish to conclude this conflict swiftly so that I can return to witness the birth of our child."

In truth, Qi Jingyi had also desired to join them, but Gu Qingheng had judiciously persuaded him against it. To be completely honest, he harbored a degree of distrust towards Prince Qi Jingrong. Even with Zhou Jiang present, they were at a disadvantage in terms of status when confronting Qi Jingrong, necessitating Qi Jingyi's continued presence for their security.

Dao Xuzi immediately fell into a contemplative silence and proceeded to walk forward along the slope. The sun was beginning its descent, indicating the necessity of finding shelter for the night.

As they navigated across the slope and pushed through some undergrowth, Gu Qingheng's wrist suddenly stirred, the golden ornament lifting its head. Simultaneously, the Spiritual Fox Ah Zi leaped nimbly from the basket.

"Someone is approaching," Ming Guang vocalized in a hushed tone.

Before long, a howl, reminiscent of a wolf's cry, could be perceived emanating from ahead. However, due to their companion Xiaobai, Gu Qingheng was quite familiar with wolves, and this sound was distinctly not a pure wolf's cry.

"That's a wolfdog," Dao Xuzi declared, having already darted ahead. He observed Ah Zi facing off against a black wolfdog. "This creature has been domesticated by humans."

To describe it as a confrontation might be a slight exaggeration; the wolfdog stood baring its fangs at Ah Zi, yet Ah Zi clearly perceived its opponent as lacking sufficient strength and remained seated, observing with casual indifference. The wolfdog, not entirely foolish, sensed Ah Zi's potent aura and merely emitted a low growl, refraining from launching an actual charge.

"You're quite perceptive," Dao Xuzi commented to the wolfdog, his gaze fixed upon it. "Otherwise, you would have met your demise long ago."

Whether the wolfdog comprehended the words was uncertain. Instead, it ceased its growling and turned its head, looking back.

At that precise moment, a gaunt man emerged from the woods, bearing two wild rabbits. He froze momentarily upon the sight of Gu Qingheng and his companions.

Upon seeing its owner, the wolfdog trotted to his side, emitting a soft whimper.

Arang gently stroked the wolfdog's head and regarded Gu Qingheng and the others with a wary expression. "Who are you?" he inquired, his words spoken in a tribal dialect.

"We are here to gather herbs in the mountains," Gu Qingheng responded, also using the tribal dialect. "It is growing late, and we seek a place to rest for the night."
