“Mm.” Celeste Linden nodded, wanting to be a bit further away from him.
But Ethan Barnes’ hand fell gently on her soft waist, hugging her from behind.
Celeste froze, then quickly started to struggle, “Let me go!”
“Celeste, we’re getting divorced tomorrow, just let me hold you one more time tonight.” His gentle voice sounded in her ear.
Celeste didn’t move.
Tonight was their last night together.
Feeling her compliance, Ethan planted a kiss on her long flowing hair.
Celeste closed her eyes. Perhaps it was due to the pregnancy, or maybe because his embrace was too warm, she quickly drifted off into a hazy dream.
Before she fell asleep, Ethan whispered in her ear, “Celeste, I love you.”
……
The next day, Ethan drove Celeste to the civil affairs bureau to process their divorce papers.
The civil affairs bureau was crowded, so Ethan grabbed a chair for Celeste, “Celeste, sit here and rest for a while. I’ll go queue up.”
If it had been earlier on, Ethan wouldn’t have had the patience to wait in line, but after being with Celeste for so long, his temper had softened.
This made others envious, “Look how considerate her boyfriend is. After we get married, you better treat me this well too.”
Then Ethan stepped into the divorce queue.
People were taken aback, “Sir, you’re in the wrong queue, that’s the divorce line. Come over here, this is the marriage line.”
Ethan showed no expression, “Divorce line, I didn’t queue wrongly.”
What?
How could such a loving couple be here for a divorce rather than marriage?
It was soon their turn, Ethan and Celeste sat in front of the staff, who said, “Young man, young lady, do you really want to divorce? Your relationship seems so good, even better than some couples who come to get a marriage certificate. Don’t get divorced.”
Facing the staff’s persuasion, Ethan spoke up, “Enough with the talk, we’re here to divorce. Get on with the procedure.”
Celeste sat quietly on one side, not speaking. She had never seen him this proactive before, more eager about divorce than anyone else, leaving Celeste with a bittersweet feeling in her heart.
Seeing that persuasion didn’t work, the staff took out the necessary forms to fill out, then received a phone call.
The staff answered the call, then looked apologetically at Ethan and Celeste, “Sorry, it’s really not a good time for you to come now. The couple before you got to divorce successfully, but just after that, the policy changed, and now you can’t get divorced.”
“Why?” Ethan asked.
“Because there’s now a 30-day cooling-off period for divorces, meaning today you can only submit the papers. The divorce can be finalized after one month.”
“…”
Ethan’s eyebrows furrowed sharply, and he smacked the documents onto the desk with a “thud,” “What do you mean by this, isn’t this deliberately obstructive?”
“Sir, why are you in such a hurry to divorce? Your wife is so beautiful and gentle, why not go back and consider it further?”
“There’s no need to consider. I want the divorce now,” Ethan urged.
“Sir, it’s truly not possible now. Please return in a month.”
Seeing Ethan’s anxious demeanor, Celeste gave him a cold glare, then turned and walked away.
Out of the civil bureau, down the steps, Ethan quickly caught up and grabbed her, “Celeste, why are you leaving? I’ll figure something out, we’ll definitely finalize the divorce today.”
