Celeste fainted after an intense argument with Ethan, who mistakenly believed she intended to abort their child. She was taken to the hospital, where doctors confirmed both she and the baby were safe, attributing her collapse to stress. Ethan, consumed by guilt, resolved to grant Celeste's wish for a divorce.

He said, let’s get a divorce.

Celeste Linden’s mind went completely blank. She stared at him in utter shock, almost suspecting she’d misheard. What did he just say?

He said divorce?

Wasn’t he the one who refused to divorce? Why did he suddenly agree?

Ethan Barnes took her icy little hand, lifted it to his lips and kissed it. “Celeste, I’ve thought it through. I’m letting go. I agree to let you leave. Keeping you by my side—is it getting so hard you can hardly breathe? This is all my fault. Let’s get a divorce. But please, have this baby.”

“I know you want to take Danielle with you. As much as I can’t bear it, I’ll let Danielle go with you. I’ll have people arrange everything for your life out there. From then on I’ll just come see the child and absolutely won’t disturb you. Would that be okay?”

He had actually already thought it through that far. It seemed he’d completely made up his mind to divorce.

He wasn’t even keeping Danielle.

She was the one who’d always wanted a divorce, always wanted to escape from him, yet at this moment, she didn’t feel all that relieved or happy.

She didn’t know what was wrong with her either.

She looked at Ethan and said slowly, “Don’t worry, I’ll have this baby.”

“Okay. Rest today. Tomorrow we’ll go file for divorce.”

…

Ethan carried Celeste back home. With him and Mrs. Webb looking after her, she didn’t have to get out of bed. Danielle stayed sweetly by her side, chattering away, and was even preparing a gift for her little brother.

Both of them agreed there was no need to tell Danielle about the divorce yet. They’d wait until she was older.

They’d get divorced first, and when they moved out they’d coax Danielle by saying she had to go to school somewhere else.

That night, Danielle lay on the bed happily. “Mommy, can Daddy sleep in here tonight? Your tummy is going to get bigger and bigger, Daddy can help take care of you at night.”

Celeste saw right through Danielle’s little scheme. Danielle just couldn’t bear to part with her daddy and wanted the whole family to sleep together.

Anyway, they were getting divorced. In the future, chances to share a bed would be very, very rare for Danielle. Celeste’s heart softened and she agreed. “Okay.”

“Daddy!” Danielle jumped out of bed in delight and ran into the living room. “Daddy, come on, Mommy said you can sleep with us tonight.”

Ethan’s tall frame stiffened. He hadn’t expected Celeste to let him into the bedroom before the divorce.

Ethan stroked his daughter’s little face, reluctant to let go. “Really? Your mommy is really letting me go in and sleep with you two?”

“She is, Daddy. Hurry up and come in. Mommy, me, and little brother are waiting for you.”

Ethan took the fastest shower of his life. When he came to the bedside, Danielle was lying in the middle and Celeste was on the inside.

“Mommy, I want to sleep on the inside tonight.” Danielle rolled over and crawled to the inside, leaving Celeste in the middle.

Hee hee.

Danielle looked at Ethan with bright, shining eyes and grinned.

Ethan gave Danielle a confirming look, then lay down next to Celeste.

Celeste couldn’t win against Danielle, but she turned her back, facing away from Ethan. “Danielle, go to sleep. Good night.”

“Good night, Daddy, Mommy.” Danielle drifted into a sweet dream.

Celeste patted her daughter’s back. Just then she felt the man’s broad, firm chest press up against her from behind. His arm reached over to touch Danielle’s little face. “Is our daughter asleep?”

As he spoke, his breath brushed against her cheek.
