Waa waa waa.
Ethan Barnes’s guys started hooting and hollering. "Boss, you and sis-in-law are way too sweet."
"Boss, we haven’t even gotten wives yet, can you please stop murdering us single dogs."
Celeste Linden’s little face flushed red. Just then Ethan wrapped an arm around her soft waist, pulling her into his arms to shield her as he cursed, "Shoo shoo shoo, get lost."
Everyone scattered.
Ethan looked down at the delicate wife in his arms. "You really will call me, right? Then I’ll be looking forward to your call."
Celeste reached out to take Danielle, looked at him and said, "Got it. Everyone’s waiting for you, you’d better get going."
"Then I’m off." Ethan turned and left.
Celeste watched his tall, straight back, feeling a little empty inside. Right before he got in the car, she suddenly called out to stop him, "Ethan!"
Ethan turned his head, the corners of his thin lips lifting. "What is it?"
Celeste said, "Be careful out there."
Ethan laughed. "Got it, don’t worry, I’m not about to make you a widow."
Celeste, "..."
Ethan got into the jeep, and the whole group drove off in grand fashion.
Celeste stood where she was, watching them leave. Only when they’d completely disappeared from sight did she finally stay there for a long time without moving.
Danielle wrapped her little arms around Mommy’s neck and said in a milky voice, "Mommy, Daddy just left, are you already missing Daddy?"
Celeste denied it right away. "I’m not."
"Mommy totally is. If you miss him, you miss him, it’s not embarrassing. Daddy just left and Danielle already misses Daddy." Danielle said.
Celeste was speechless for a moment. She took one last look in the direction Ethan had gone, then carried Danielle back to the room.
For some reason, today the room felt especially empty and quiet.
"Danielle, it’s still early. Hurry up and get some more sleep."
"Okay, I’m going to dream about Daddy." Danielle closed her eyes.
Celeste lay down as well, but she couldn’t fall asleep at all. She reached out and touched the spot where Ethan had been lying. It was empty now, but still faintly warm.
Just then there was a "ding" as her phone rang. A WeChat came in, from Ethan.
He’d taken her phone himself and added his contact back when they got married. The two of them hadn’t really messaged much. She’d saved his name as "Big Demon King."
Ethan: Go to sleep.
Just two simple words, telling her to catch up on sleep.
Celeste wasn’t used to this way of interacting with him. It felt like they were being really close. But since he’d already sent it, if she didn’t reply it would seem rude.
Celeste thought for a moment, then sent back a single word: Mm.
Ethan didn’t reply again.
Celeste shoved her phone under her pillow, then closed her eyes. This time she fell asleep quickly.
...
Mother and daughter slept again, and then Celeste took Danielle to kindergarten. She came back to work on her design sketches; this time, no one came to bother her.
In the afternoon, Celeste went to the kindergarten to pick up Danielle. Danielle was lining up inside when there was a ding and Ethan sent a text: I’m here.
Looks like this time he really went far; just the drive took eight or nine hours.
Thinking of how worn out he must be from traveling, Celeste opened her camera and took a super cute photo of Danielle to send over, showing that she was at kindergarten picking up their daughter after school, and also letting him see his girl.
Then Ethan’s reply came, two words: What about you?
What did he mean by that?
Is he... asking to see a photo of her?
