Chapter 582: The Last One Out
Leon reached Seraphine before her second step.
She opened her mouth.
"I’m fine."
He kissed her before she could say it.
Seraphine stiffened for a moment.
Then her arms wrapped around him.
Her kiss was different from Ira’s. There was no desperate force behind it. Seraphine allowed herself to relax slowly, surrendering the control that had carried her out of the dungeon.
Her tongue met his.
She leaned into him while Leon’s life energy spread through her body.
The deep cuts beneath her armor began to close. Mana flowed through her exhausted channels, easing the damage left by the trial.
When their lips finally separated, Seraphine kept her forehead against his.
"You came back," Leon said.
"So did you."
"Barely."
Seraphine glanced at the dried blood still covering parts of his repaired armor.
"You look worse than I do."
"The blood isn’t mine anymore."
"That sentence does not make me feel better."
"It should. I’m healed."
A short distance away, Ira crossed her arms.
"That kiss was longer."
Seraphine did not turn.
"You counted?"
"I did not."
"You answered very quickly."
Ira’s face darkened.
"I didn’t need a long kiss because I came out in better condition."
Vyra looked at her niece’s burned clothing.
Seraphine followed her gaze.
"I see."
"Stop doing that."
"Doing what?"
"Agreeing like that."
Despite the banter, the tension did not leave them.
Loriel remained inside.
Leon finished healing Seraphine before returning to the new survivors.
The dungeon continued releasing people in smaller groups. Each wave contained fewer participants than the one before.
Leon healed those in danger and sent them home.
The families who had already reunited left the area. Those still waiting remained near the entrance, refusing food, rest, or comfort.
Hours passed.
The dungeon’s light began to weaken.
Leon updated the count.
Nine hundred and twelve survivors had returned.
Seven people were still missing.
Loriel was one of them.
Another pulse released three participants.
Two more emerged several minutes later.
The entrance began contracting.
Leon stared at the remaining light.
Two people were still missing.
A final man fell out of the dungeon and struck the ground. Leon teleported to him, stabilized his heart, and sent him toward the healers.
One remained.
Loriel.
The dungeon continued closing.
Ira’s earlier energy disappeared.
Seraphine stood with one hand around her sword’s hilt. Her face remained calm, but her fingers had turned white.
Vyra said nothing.
Leon approached the entrance.
He pressed his spatial authority against the boundary again.
Nothing changed.
He tried the Cosmic System.
No response.
He used holy energy, life energy, and mana to search for any connection to Loriel.
The dungeon rejected everything.
The entrance shrank until only a narrow column of light remained.
Leon’s chest tightened.
He could kill enemies several ranks above himself.
He could create worlds, bend space, and survive wounds that should have ended him.
None of it allowed him to reach one person trapped behind this wall.
The last light began collapsing.
Something flew through it.
Leon moved before he recognized the body.
Green hair streamed through the air, soaked dark with blood.
Loriel fell from the closing dungeon.
Leon caught her.
Her body was cold.
Cuts covered nearly every part of her. Several bones had shattered, and a deep wound passed through her abdomen. Her breathing was so faint that even Leon struggled to detect it.
Worse, some kind of destructive life energy continued spreading through her body. It twisted natural growth into something violent, forcing healthy tissue to consume itself.
Leon placed one hand against her chest.
Life energy flooded into her.
"Leon?" Ira asked.
He did not respond.
The spreading damage resisted ordinary healing. Leon changed his approach immediately.
Holy energy entered Loriel’s body and separated the hostile influence from her natural vitality. At the same time, Leon used his Life affinity to keep her organs functioning.
Her heart stopped.
Leon forced it to beat again.
Seraphine dropped beside them.
"What do you need?"
"Nothing. Give me space."
Vyra knelt on the other side.
"The damage is still spreading below her ribs."
"I see it."
"It is moving toward her heart."
"Not anymore."
Leon trapped the hostile energy and burned it away with holy power.
Loriel’s broken ribs returned to their proper position. Her lungs repaired. The terrible wound through her stomach closed layer by layer.
Ira stood nearby, both hands clenched.
"She’s going to survive, right?"
Leon still did not answer.
He repaired Loriel’s mana channels last.
They were different from what he remembered.
Something had changed inside them during the trial. The new structure was wider, deeper, and filled with a strange vitality even while damaged.
Leon did not have time to study it.
He stabilized everything and checked her again.
Loriel’s heart beat steadily.
Her breathing returned.
Her injuries were gone.
She did not wake.
"Loriel."
Leon touched her face.
No response.
For one terrible moment, he wondered if he had repaired her body too late.
He searched deeper.
Her consciousness was still there.
Whole.
Safe.
She had simply exhausted herself so completely that her mind and body had shut down.
Leon finally breathed.
"She’s alive."
Ira sat down hard on the ground.
Seraphine’s hand loosened around her sword.
Vyra closed her eyes for a moment.
Behind them, the dungeon disappeared.
The final count appeared on the temporary record maintained by the officials.
Nine hundred and nineteen survivors.
Fifty-one dead.
The survival rate was far better than the historical records Leon had studied.
It did not feel like a victory.
Fifty-one people had entered after trusting his warning and their own resolve.
Fifty-one families would receive no one back.
Leon gave the settlement leaders instructions to care for the survivors and prepare the names of the dead. Compensation, support, and proper memorials would be handled after the immediate crisis.
Then he lifted Loriel.
"She needs rest."
Leon folded space around Vyra, Ira, Seraphine, and himself.
They disappeared from the empty ground outside the dungeon.
