Chapter 581: The Ones Who Came Back
The answer left a heavy silence between them.
None of the other nine hundred and sixty-nine participants had returned.
The Class Reawakening Dungeon continued to pulse behind Vyra. Every surge shook the ground and disturbed the mana in the air, but Leon could not tell what was happening inside.
He spread his spatial awareness toward the entrance.
It stopped at the boundary.
The Cosmic System gave him nothing useful either. Whatever laws governed the dungeon kept the trials hidden from everyone outside.
"You should rest," Leon said. "At least let me heal you properly."
"Later."
Vyra remained facing the dungeon.
"Ira is still inside."
"So are Seraphine and Loriel."
"And the others."
Leon placed a hand on Vyra’s shoulder anyway. Life energy entered her body, easing the worst damage in her muscles and channels.
Vyra allowed it for several seconds before stepping away.
"That is enough."
"It isn’t."
"It is enough for me to stand."
Leon did not argue further.
Neither of them asked about the other’s rewards. Leon had just returned from the Ascension Tower, and Vyra clearly carried a new class, but discussing their gains while hundreds of people were still fighting for their lives felt wrong.
They waited.
The dungeon pulsed again.
Its entrance flared white.
A red-skinned figure stumbled through.
"Ira."
She nearly fell the moment her feet touched the ground.
One side of her clothing had burned away, and black scorch marks covered her skin. Several wounds crossed her arms and stomach. The fire within her body was unstable, rising and falling with every breath.
Ira forced herself upright.
She raised her chin and took two steady steps as though she had just returned from an easy training session.
Then she saw Leon.
The strength left her legs.
Leon caught her before she reached the ground.
Ira clutched him with both arms. Her fingers tightened against the back of his armor as if she feared something might drag her into the dungeon again.
"I’ve got you," Leon said.
She did not answer.
He poured life energy through her body. Burned flesh recovered beneath his hand. Mana flowed into her damaged channels and stabilized them, while holy energy destroyed the hostile residue left by the trial.
Ira kept holding him.
Leon lowered his head and kissed her.
Her response was immediate.
Ira pulled him closer and pressed her lips against his with desperate force. Her tongue entered his mouth, meeting his without hesitation. The kiss lasted far longer than anything she would have allowed in front of Vyra under normal circumstances.
Leon did not stop her.
He continued healing her as the trembling in her body slowly faded.
When Ira finally pulled back, she remained close enough that their foreheads almost touched.
"You should have seen me in there," she said between breaths. "The dungeon tried everything. It didn’t stand a chance."
Vyra stared at her niece.
Ira’s clothes were half burned, her hair was a mess, and Leon was still supporting most of her weight.
"Ira."
"What?"
"You nearly collapsed after taking two steps."
"I was tired from winning."
"You are currently unable to stand without Leon."
"I’m letting him hold me because he missed me."
Leon’s mouth twitched.
Vyra’s stare became flatter.
"Of course."
The dungeon entrance brightened again before Ira could invent another excuse.
This time, several people emerged together.
The first man came out carrying a woman whose left leg ended below the knee. Another survivor followed with both arms wrapped around his stomach, trying to hold a terrible wound closed.
More appeared behind them.
Some walked.
Others crawled.
A few were dragged out by those who still had enough strength to help.
Leon released Ira only after confirming that she could stand.
"Stay with Vyra."
"I can help."
"You can help by not falling over."
Ira opened her mouth.
Vyra caught her shoulder.
"You heard him."
Leon was already moving.
He reached the man with the stomach wound first. Life energy entered the injury and stopped the bleeding. Leon rebuilt the damaged organs enough to remove the immediate danger, then moved to the woman missing her leg.
He could not restore a complete limb in a few seconds without exhausting far more energy than necessary, but he closed the wound and stabilized her condition.
More participants emerged.
Leon organized the survivors as he worked.
"Anyone with healing skills, come forward."
Several exhausted people obeyed.
"Handle the smaller injuries. Don’t waste your strength trying to repair anything beyond your ability. Keep them alive until I reach them."
He pointed toward those who could still walk.
"Carry the unconscious away from the entrance. Keep this area clear."
Leon’s combat experience helped him judge which injuries would become fatal first, but the healing itself came from his Life affinity, mana control, and holy energy.
He moved from one person to another.
Collapsed lungs opened.
Bleeding stopped.
Damaged channels stabilized.
Hostile energies left by the trials were burned away.
Once someone was out of immediate danger, Leon teleported them to their settlement. Families and local healers were waiting there.
The first reunions began almost immediately.
A mother screamed her son’s name and threw herself around him before the spatial fold had fully settled. An old man dropped to his knees when his daughter appeared alive.
Not everyone received the person they were waiting for.
Some families kept watching the dungeon.
The number of survivors slowly rose.
So did the number of missing participants.
Leon maintained a count while he worked.
More than twenty people were already unaccounted for.
The dungeon was still active, so the number was not final. That did little to comfort the families waiting nearby.
Another group emerged.
Then another.
Some participants carried new pressure around them, suggesting successful reawakenings.
Others returned without any clear change.
A few looked more defeated than injured. They had survived, but whatever happened inside had broken something that healing could not immediately repair.
Leon did not ask about their classes.
There would be time for that later.
The dungeon surged once more.
This pulse was stronger than the others.
The light inside the entrance twisted, and a lone figure stepped out.
Amethyst hair hung around a blood-covered face.
Cracks ran through her damaged armor.
Seraphine remained standing through nothing but discipline.
Her eyes crossed the clearing.
They found Leon.
