Clair's husband, John, is revealed to be alive but horribly mutated and controlled by a Titan-Class Mutant. Despite Clair's pleas, Gabriel is forced to kill the mutated John to ensure the team's escape with valuable fuel. The survivors return to Earth, but Clair is left emotionally shattered by the tragic encounter.

Technically it had been a successful incursion. They obtained all the fuel they wanted, and everyone survived... some in better condition than others. But Clair, after that day, was never the same again. It was clear in her empty eyes. The innocence she once held, along with the naive stupidity that had defined her, had all faded away. In their place remained only a dark mixture of hatred, sorrow, and disbelief.

I continued experiencing the long series of memories and scenes, learning more about what had truly happened in Lolth’s distant past.

Once they returned to Gabriel’s laboratory, he congratulated everyone present and even organized a party to celebrate their "victory." Yet she remained alone in a quiet corner, silently watching the city night through a window while drinking wine by herself.

I could tell that Clair was half-expecting Gabriel to eventually come over to her, to explain everything that had happened, or at least to offer some kind of apology... but...

He never did.

He ignored her completely and continued moving through the party with easy laughter, talking with everyone else around him. He was the undeniable heart of the celebration — that damn bastard.

The memories warped again. Time seemed to have passed. A great deal of time.

Years, perhaps.

News articles on her phone showed that the "Otherworldly Gates" continued expanding across the surface of planet Earth, slowly turning it into a burning hellscape filled with mutants of every kind.

Other headlines spoke of "intelligent mutants" capable of speech and possessing human-like appearances, though they were gigantic, red-skinned, and bore large horns upon their heads.

These beings had formed organized tribes or clans and were actively working together to destroy remaining human settlements while steadily continuing their conquest of the planet.

Among those reports, sometimes... a photograph of their leader could be seen. She still could not fully believe it, but...

It really was him.

"John... what... has this world become?"

She looked up at the blue sky — or what little remained of it — and then...

A gigantic, utterly massive ark constructed by thousands of robots flew into view, moving steadily in multiple directions.

"Our greatest achievement," Gabriel said as he stepped forward with a few dozen other people. "The Ark... With this, Humanity will finally have a true chance to survive... isn’t it incredible? What humanity can accomplish when we work together?"

By his side stood a little girl — his daughter, whom he had fathered with someone else.

She looked a great deal like...

Like Nephilim.

"..." The child was shy, glancing at Lolth from a distance while hiding partially behind her father.

Lolth glared at the girl with cold anger and walked away without any desire to engage with anyone else present.

After a short while, however, Gabriel returned to her and held out a silver card.

"Clair, this is your card," he said. "Don’t lose it. It is your personal pass."

"...So you’re almost done with the Ark?" she asked quietly.

"Yes," he nodded. "It contains everything we need to survive... of course, as an Awakened, and someone as incredible as you, you’re welcome to ascend with us toward the stars."

"More like run away from our problems..." she sighed, shaking her head while taking a long drag from a cigarette. "Do you really think this is... the right thing to do, Gabriel?"

"...Well, if you’re so inclined to stay behind, then stay," he answered dismissively. "Go meet your husband if you want. I’ve heard—"

She slapped his face hard without the slightest hesitation.

"..." He glared at her with swelling anger, the side of his face already turning red.

"Thank you," she said coldly as she took the card from his hands. "And that was payback from back then... I’m glad you’ve built your life, your wife, and your daughter. Truly happy for you, Gabriel. I hope they survive the star travel, and that we all become gods or whatever the fuck you believe is going to happen..." She turned and walked away without looking back.

Gabriel simply smiled at her retreating figure and walked off without saying another word.

And just like that, my eyes blinked once more, and I found myself back in reality.

Only a second or two of real time had passed, yet it felt as though I had lived inside those memories for days.

Lolth, still in her weakened form, looked at me with clear shame. "You saw it... my memories... didn’t you?"

I sighed, kneeling down toward her. "Yeah. It sucked. Girl, you’re really dumb. How did you let him manipulate you AGAIN even now?"

"Ah..." she muttered, slowly shaking her head. "I... I... I don’t know... I somehow feel clearer-minded now... what did you do to me? There was so much... darkness inside my mind... so much madness...? It’s gone?"

"It’s part of the contract," I answered with a kind smile. "I ate your madness. It’s also the power of my own curse... You’re welcome. Time to start doing the right thing for the first time in your life, Lolth... or should I say, Clair?"

"!!!" She looked at me in pure disbelief. "So you really did see everything..." She felt ashamed, embarrassed, and frustrated all at once, but I simply tossed some clothes toward her. "What is this?"

"Put them on," I said. "What? You want to walk around naked?"

"N-No!" she snapped. "And I can make my own clothes!!!" she hissed angrily while I simply laughed at her reaction.

What I had witnessed, at the end of the day, was only the past.

A new future still awaited us.

She was still alive, which meant she could still make a difference.

It was never too late.

I would make certain she did... or I would force her to do so anyway.

When I opened my eyes again, I was back where I had been before — inside Lolth’s slightly ruined castle within the Dragon Tomb Dungeon.

As Lolth and I finally finished sealing the contract, new system notifications appeared in front of me, catching me by surprise.

[Congratulations, you have successfully forged a Divine Familiar Contract with the [Evil Goddess of Spiders and Monsters – Lolth]!]

[Because you’ve forged a powerful bond between your Divinity and hers, you have inherited some of her power.]
