The instant those words escaped his lips, tears streamed down his cheeks. Shelly couldn’t bear to watch Nox, a grown man, sobbing uncontrollably.
Monica, seated beside Jeanne, murmured, “Nox is such a crybaby. Why is he crying when the bride isn’t?”
Jeanne smiled as well. She hadn’t expected Nox to be so sentimental, shedding tears without any regard for his dignity.
“Our groom seems quite emotional,” the officiant joked. “Don’t cry. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to cry once you face all those household chores!” Everyone laughed heartily at the officiant’s witty remark.
Helpless against Nox’s tears, Shelly whispered, “Don’t cry.”
“I can’t control it,” Nox said, wiping his tears while looking all pitiful.
Who could have imagined a business powerhouse breaking down in tears at his own wedding?
“Have you both exchanged rings?” the officiant inquired.
A staff member passed them the wedding rings, and they slipped them onto each other’s fingers. Nox had finally stemmed his tears, but the sight of the diamond ring glittering on Shelly’s finger made them flow again.
“Hey, can you stop crying?”
Shelly, unable to endure it longer, reached out to wipe Nox’s tears. Yet Nox only cried harder.
“By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. The groom may kiss the bride,” the officiant declared.
Nox gazed at Shelly through misty eyes and leaned in to kiss her. But as he drew near, he hesitated and pulled back, seemingly afraid to proceed. Then Shelly’s eyes narrowed, and she grabbed his head, kissing him boldly.
Applause thundered through the hall right then. The guests cheered the courageous bride.
Nox stared at Shelly with eyes wide in surprise. He’d always initiated their intimate moments while she remained reserved. So with Shelly kissing him now… his heart felt like it was melting away.
Instinctively, he pulled Shelly close and deepened the kiss. It stretched on for seconds, then minutes…
“Ahem.” The officiant, feeling awkward, softly reminded Nox, “Hey, that’s enough. Save it for tonight.”
Though spoken quietly, the officiant’s microphone carried it to everyone, sparking another wave of laughter from the crowd.
Shelly shoved Nox away quickly. Her lipstick had vanished, and her lips were a bit swollen. Seeing him switch from ugly crying to fiery passion in moments, she finally got why they say a man’s nature never changes!
“Congratulations!” the officiant announced. “Does the groom have anything to say?”
In the midst of the applause, Nox received a microphone.
Nox grasped the microphone and scanned the attendees. After a pause, he began, “First of all, thank you all for attending my wedding. I thought I’d be the one leaving everyone hanging. After all, I bolted from the wedding and got dragged back halfway.”
The audience laughed once more. Nox’s antics mortified Shelly.
“I love Shelly very much. If I had known she was the bride, I would’ve shown up last night and never run off,” Nox declared, his eyes reddening anew.
The realization that he was marrying Shelly overwhelmed him, tears spilling freely and amusing everyone further.
Weddings should be filled with joy, and any tears usually come from the moved bride. No wedding had ever featured a groom weeping from start to finish.
“I don’t know what else to say.” Nox’s voice choked with emotion. “I will treat Shelly well and love her very, very much. Finally, I would like to thank everyone again for coming to my wedding.”
His words earned another round of applause. Though amusing, his genuine emotions touched all present.
Monica sighed inwardly. “Nox has finally found his match. No more listening to his complaints.”
Jeanne smiled and nodded. Nox’s bliss moved her too.
Suddenly, her stomach twisted uncomfortably.
“I’m going to the bathroom.” Jeanne rose and departed.
Edward rushed after her.
