"What happened? Why do you look so tense?"
"You would be tense too after hearing this." Rina spoke with a bitter smile.
Ethan's expression changed.
The warmth in his eyes disappeared as he sensed that something serious had happened.
"It's from Royal Capital. The spies hidden inside gave us a message."
Rina paused for a moment before continuing.
"The Crown Princess contacted us."
"The Crown Princess!"
Ethan's expression turned sombre.
He straightened his body and looked directly at Rina.
"What does she want?"
Rina took a slow breath before answering.
"She wants us to help her escape from the Imperial Capital."
Rina remained close to Ethan as she watched his expression change. The request from the Crown Princess was not something they could simply ignore.
Elena was still inside the Imperial Capital, and the city was currently controlled by the aristocratic families. Any attempt to escape would be dangerous, especially with Prince Charles beside her. If they were discovered, the aristocrats could immediately surround them and use the Royal Family as a bargaining chip.
Ethan lowered his gaze for a moment and thought about the situation. His fingers lightly rubbed his chin as several thoughts passed through his mind.
"The Crown Princess wants to escape with Prince Charles?"
Rina nodded.
"Yes. She doesn't want to remain in the Capital. She believes that once the aristocratic families finish taking control, they will either use them as a bargaining chip or remove them completely."
Ethan's brows tightened.
"How did she contact us?"
"Through the person who makes her dresses. He has worked for the Royal Family for many years, and the Crown Princess apparently found a way to use him without alerting the guards."
Rina paused and looked at Ethan carefully before continuing.
"She only wants to survive with her son."
Ethan remained silent. He remembered Prince Charles from the battlefield. The boy was only sixteen years old, yet he had already lost his grandfather and father. Elena had also been trapped inside the palace while everything around her collapsed.
Ethan slowly exhaled.
"What about the rest of the Royal Family?"
Rina shook her head.
"There isn't much information. Most of them have either been captured, killed or scattered. The Crown Princess believes that she and Prince Charles are among the few remaining members who still have a chance to escape."
Ethan's expression became more serious.
"Did she ask for protection or does she want to rebel?"
"She asked for help escaping first. She said she doesn't expect you to forgive the Royal Family or accept them back into Arcadia. She only wants a chance to leave. She doesn't want to contest for the Throne."
Ethan looked toward the distant Blank Estate. The estate looked peaceful from this distance, but he knew that the situation outside was far from peaceful. The war had ended, yet its effects were still spreading everywhere.
For a moment, he said nothing.
He had every reason to refuse. The Royal Family had caused him plenty of trouble. Haster had once treated him as an enemy, and Alaster had nearly dragged the entire Empire into a disastrous war.
But Elena and Charles were not the ones who had started everything.
Ethan remembered his warning to the Emperors. He did not want innocent people to suffer because of the actions of those above them. Still, helping the remaining members of the Royal Family could bring another problem to his doorstep.
"Where are they now?"
"Inside the Imperial Palace."
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
"Then getting them out won't be easy."
Rina shook her head.
"The Capital is under heavy control. The aristocratic families have placed their own warriors throughout the streets, and the palace is being watched closely. Even our spies are having trouble moving around."
Ethan rubbed his chin and looked toward the horizon.
"So they want us to sneak into the Capital, enter the palace, and bring out the Crown Princess and Prince Charles without being noticed."
Rina gave him a small nod."That is what she is asking."
Ethan sighed."She certainly chose the right time to ask."
Rina looked at him with concern.
"You don't have to do it if you don't want to."
Ethan turned toward her. For a moment, his expression remained calm, but his eyes showed that he was still thinking carefully.
Whether to act or not?
That was the question.
He had already helped enough people during the war, and he had just returned home. He wanted to spend some peaceful time with his family instead of getting dragged into another troublesome matter.
But leaving Elena and Charles inside the Imperial Capital also did not feel right.
Rina watched him quietly and waited for his answer.
Ethan finally looked at her.
"I need to talk with someone before deciding this."
Rina nodded.
"In case you want to help."
"Yes."
Ethan's gaze shifted toward the document in her hand.
"I already prepared some information. Our people have marked several routes through the Capital, and there is one old underground passage that connects to the outer district."
Ethan's eyes narrowed with interest.
"An underground passage?"
"Yes. It was built during the early days of the Empire. It hasn't been used in years, but our people believe part of it is still accessible."
Ethan nodded slowly.
"Good. Send the information to me."
Rina reached into her storage ring and took out a thin document.
"I brought it with me."
Ethan accepted it and opened the document. His eyes quickly moved across the map. Several routes had been marked, along with locations where the aristocratic forces had placed their guards.
The Imperial Capital was already heavily guarded, but the underground route gave them a possible way in and out.
Ethan folded the document and looked at Rina.
"Keep this matter quiet for now. Don't let too many people know about it."
Rina nodded.
"Understood."
Ethan looked down at the map once again, his expression becoming thoughtful.
He had not decided whether he would help them yet but one thing was certain.
This matter was going to bring him another headache.
