Song Yan pivoted gracefully, avoiding the strike aimed at her. She maintained a composed expression as she faced the man behind her, who was glaring back with visible agitation.
"Who are you?" Pillar One demanded, his face twisted in fury. He was unable to comprehend how this lone woman had successfully eliminated every other pillar by herself.
With only himself and Li Xiuying remaining, Pillar One was baffled as to why this woman was hunting them with such relentless determination.
He had encountered many rivals before, but never someone this formidable.
"Who do you imagine I am?" Song Yan retorted, a faint smile playing on her lips. She called forth her scythe and lunged toward him with swift, agile movements. "I am your demise."
Pillar One’s pupils dilated; he realized she had no intention of answering his inquiry. Shifting his focus, he abandoned all other thoughts and charged toward the approaching Song Yan.
A series of exploding talismans were hurled toward her by Pillar One.
Observing the incoming talismans, Song Yan narrowed her gaze and evaded. She retreated three steps before leaping into the air, retaliating by throwing a cluster of her own talismans.
She had to acknowledge the man's prowess, as every talisman he used was of A-grade quality!
It was clear why he held the top rank among the pillars.
However, she knew that the greater his power, the more atrocities he must have committed to reach such a height.
Song Yan pressed her palms together and summoned Ceribi, her familiar.
The atmosphere was filled with menacing growls as Ceribi materialized. The three-headed creature glared at the man, who had ceased his attack and was now backing away.
'A familiar? She can actually summon a familiar?' Pillar One stared at Ceribi in shock. Looking at Song Yan standing behind the massive beast, a wave of dread washed over him.
A sinking feeling told him that he might not survive this encounter.
Gritting his teeth, Pillar One summoned his own familiar—a massive Ghost Knight.
However, because Song Yan’s frequent Cultivation had significantly boosted Ceribi’s level, the Ghost Knight appeared to be nothing more than a fragile pile of bones to the three-headed beast.
Ceribi roared and pounced on the Ghost Knight. Pillar One watched in horror, realizing that despite his high Cultivation, he was no match for this woman and her power.
"You shouldn't lose focus during a battle," a frigid voice whispered. As Pillar One spun around, he saw Song Yan’s scythe swinging toward him.
"Ahhhh!" The man shrieked in agony as the heavenly scythe, a weapon that had claimed countless souls, sliced through his skin as easily as a hot blade through butter.
Pillar One stared down at his smoldering flesh. He bit his lip and glared at Song Yan, "I will kill you for this!"
"How terrifying," Song Yan remarked with a light chuckle, tossing her scythe into the air.
The man momentarily believed she was surrendering, until he watched the weapon transform into a chain scythe.
It was a chilling sight, as the chain scythe now radiated even more intense heavenly spiritual Qi.
Cursing his misfortune, Pillar One glared at her while drawing his peach wood sword and throwing another volley of talismans at Song Yan.
The village became a chaotic scene of dancing flames and flying debris as the two clashed.
"Why won't you just die!" Pillar One bellowed, launching another talisman. This was a dark talisman, refined through the suffering of innocent souls.
Song Yan calmly observed the dark talisman and countered with an S-grade exorcising talisman. The two collided in mid-air, vanishing in a loud explosion.
Frustrated, Pillar One used another dark talisman to call upon the malevolent spirits haunting the ruined village.
Song Yan sighed as she looked at the spirits he had summoned. Some people truly lacked the wisdom to surrender.
Unaware of her thoughts, Pillar One took advantage of the spirits surrounding her to turn and flee.
He intended to escape using a teleportation talisman, but he was stopped by the sudden, agonized wails of the spirits he had just called forth.
Startled, he looked back to see the evil spirits dissolving away.
"What—" Before he could finish his sentence, Song Yan threw an object at him.
Pillar One’s eyes widened. He instinctively swung his peach wood sword to block it, but he only heard a snap before his entire body began to sear.
"Ahhh! Ahhhh! Ahh!!!" The man screamed, clutching his face, but he felt no solid skin beneath his fingers.
Instead, his hands were covered in liquefied flesh and blood that smelled of charred remains.
"What is this?" he gasped out.
"The venom of a heavenly snake," Song Yan replied, showing a final mercy to the man who was being painfully consumed by the burn.
Song Yan had been hesitant to use the item Fu Yu Sheng had packed for her—he had given it to her with a cheerful grin, insisting it would be useful. Ultimately, she had been forced to use it.
She turned her attention to the woman standing behind her.
"If you plan to attack, I suggest you do it now," Song Yan said calmly. She refrained from attacking first, sensing that this woman was different from the others.
At the very least, she seemed more intelligent than the man who had just perished due to his overconfidence and reckless behavior.
The woman remained still, staring at Song Yan. Finally, she asked, "Can you... can you dismantle the Three Strings Array?"
Song Yan frowned at the question. She was about to tell the woman not to waste her time when the woman continued, "If you assist me, I will provide the path to infiltrate the Blood Moon Sect."
This caught Song Yan’s interest. Narrowing her eyes, she replied, "I can break it. But why are you making this request?"
Li Xiuying smiled at the answer. It was no wonder Duan He feared this woman; she even possessed the skill to break a Three Strings Array.
This was a sophisticated dark arts array. It involved three strings soaked in the blood of a three-week-old cadaver, which were then magically inserted into the head, heart, and abdomen of the victim.
Once active, the victim would waste away, their life held entirely in the hands of the dark Cultivator who cast the curse.
Li Xiuying had never desired the path of dark arts, but Duan He had kidnapped her sister and used the Three Strings Array to force her into submission.
With her sister's life on the line—the only family she had left—Li Xiuying had no choice but to serve Duan He.
Duan He had promised to dismantle the array if Li Xiuying served her faithfully, but the promise was never kept.
Aside from providing monthly pills to keep her sister alive, Duan He did nothing to free them.
"Duan He cannot be killed as long as I am alive," Li Xiuying informed Song Yan, pulling out a high-grade Hell’s Fire talisman. She saw Song Yan prepare her own talisman in response.
Li Xiuying offered a small smile and dropped a scroll from her storage ring onto the ground.
She then spoke clearly, "My sister is in the City Hospital, ward 405. Please, do not forget to break the array on her."
"What are you—"
Song Yan started to speak, but the woman acted too quickly. She activated the talisman on herself, and Song Yan watched in shock as Li Xiuying was engulfed in flames.
It had never occurred to her that one of the pillars would choose suicide over combat. She picked up the scroll from the ground and opened it.
The document contained every detail required to enter the Sect where Duan He was currently hiding.
Song Yan’s eyes sharpened as she looked at the fading fire.
It was clear that not everyone served Duan He out of genuine devotion.
"Rest easy," she whispered to the woman, though she was already gone. "I will ensure your sister is saved once I have finished Duan He."
A warm gust of wind brushed past as Song Yan turned away from the embers. She applied a teleportation talisman to herself.
The time for the final confrontation had arrived.
