Damon uses his Shadow Prison skill to trap Morticai and Xander, while his shadow clone fights on the outside. He attempts to appraise Ythar, a mysterious entity linked to the Whispering Forest, but the effort blinds him. Despite his injuries and the overwhelming danger, Damon reflects on his past arrogance.

Ythar isn’t some tree monster or horror," Damon said, his voice strained as he gathered himself. "Ythar was born from a whisper. The God of Magic once whispered, and he whispered again. From that whisper, Ythar was born. The God of Magic had whispered into a tree sapling, and Ythar made the tree his physical form because he was a formless whisper."

"And your appraisal didn’t tell us how to kill it?" Ashcroft asked.

"I don’t think we can. I mean, the previous City Lord failed to do so. Ythar was supposed to be dead, but Ittorath easily brought it back."

"I despise everything to do with True Gods and True Demons. Up above us is a nightmare. Down below, a whisper. Ethereal concepts that should otherwise be harmless are trying to kill us."

This was the first time Damon had ever heard Ashcroft voice such a complaint.

"Yeah, me too, buddy."

"I am not your buddy," Ashcroft immediately cut him off.

Damon felt a little sting in his chest, but he clicked his tongue.

"Don’t give me that. It’s like when an ugly person calls you twin."

Damon understood what he meant, even if he didn’t understand the slang very well.

"I hate you," he whispered before sliding toward a large branch.

"So now what? Who can we kill? Zhang Dafei is holding his own very well against so many people, and that Orbitus is holding back Leona, Aethergon, a Great Dragon, as well as several people in the seventh class. Not to mention they are using some spells we have no counters to."

Damon wanted to understand what was going on.

"The one called Zhang Dafei is a cultivator, so he’s using Ki at a very high level. His spells are woven with it. I believe that’s what that blind old Daoist called the Comprehension of his Dao. It’s almost like how we can rank up based on our philosophy and view of the world."

"Apart from that, they have one more energy. Zhang Dafei is using Mana as well, but to a lesser degree, while the old wizard doesn’t use any Ki but combines Aether and Mana."

Damon listened to Ashcroft before using his main body to observe what Morticai was using.

"Morticai is using Ki and Aether."

"So I see. The old man wasn’t lying after all. You can use only two at once, except for some rare exceptions who can use all three. Each can be used differently and has a different path. Some counter each other best, while some work best for different individuals."

Ashcroft’s voice seemed to echo through the darkness.

"Too bad we can only use one in this world."

"That might not actually be a bad thing. A jack of all trades is a master of none," Ashcroft whispered.

"But often times better than a master of one," Damon added with a sneer.

"So who do we kill first, assuming we can?" Ashcroft asked.

Damon was still a formless mass of shadows. He slid down the branch before twisting the shadows into the hollow of a tree, using it as a temporary hiding place as he watched the battlefield.

"Ittorath."

Damon teleported.

When he appeared, he grabbed Evangeline by the waist and pulled her out of the path of a sword light that came from Zhang Dafei.

After that, he looked around and noticed that Sylvia was still standing still, yet no one was approaching her. Iris and Luna were still with her.

He teleported away with Evangeline.

The moment she realized it was Amon, she thrust her sword toward his face.

Damon dodged, finally realizing he had gotten carried away.

"Die! Die! Die! Die!"

Waves of light shot toward him.

Damon immediately dove away before teleporting behind her.

"Wait, wait! Don’t attack!"

"You assault me, you lowlife, and think you can get away with it?"

Damon hadn’t thought much of it. He was used to grabbing her by the waist, apparently because he was Damon.

She was clearly going to have a different reaction if someone else did it.

’Go figure.’

A lance of light suddenly impaled him before he could react.

Damon’s eyes widened.

So this was her proper speed when fighting an enemy as well.

She really had been letting him grope her before.

He almost wanted to shake his head at the realization, if she wasn’t actually trying to kill him.

"Wait. Listen to me. I want to kill Ittorath, and I believe you want the same thing."

"Why should I trust you?" Evangeline said, cleaving the area around them in brilliant light.

Damon didn’t dodge.

He merely raised his hand.

"Light Dominate."

The incoming light bent around him, the spell twisting away from his body as Damon stared directly at her.

"Because Ittorath is your enemy."

"And so are you," Evangeline said coldly, her killing intent growing sharper.

Damon couldn’t reveal his identity yet, so he gritted his teeth before pointing toward the ball of shadow high above where his true body was.

"Ittorath was the one who placed a curse on your cousin, was he not?"

"I, on the other hand, have let him live every time."

"So I should be grateful, then?" she replied coldly.

"No. It’s a gesture of good faith. Ittorath cursed him once, but think about it. Which of us is the greater evil, the Outsider or myself? You are a reasonable woman."

Evangeline stopped for a moment.

She was deciding which one she wanted to kill more.

Then she glared at him.

She couldn’t see his face.

She wondered if he even had one.

Hell, she wondered if he was even a he.

Maybe he was an it.

"Demons and Goddess Races have a partnership, so we aren’t really enemies."

"I doubt you are on their side, but pray tell, how do you intend to kill Ittorath?"

Damon had been hoping she’d ask.

Honestly, trying to convince her was so much harder now. If he had been using his real face, he could have simply told her to do it, and she would have.

"We blow it up with light and reduce his form to something manageable, then we jus..."

"So basically, you don’t have a plan and just want to blast it with light magic?" she cut him off.

"Sounds like a plan to me," he added calmly.

She took a deep breath, clearly questioning every decision that had led her to this moment, before beginning to gather light around her sword and armor.

"Fine."
