Marvel: The Villain Chapter 399 Join Forces
Previously on Marvel: The Villain...
Thanos stood on the mountain, waiting for a drop-ship from the to pick him up. However, instead of a ship, he received a desperate distress signal. Through the communicator, a terrified soldier reported that the was under attack by three mystery fleets and was on the verge of crashing. Before the soldier could say more, the signal was cut.
An explosion echoed from above. Thanos looked up and watched as his pride and joy, the , disintegrated as if dissolved by acid, turning into fine stardust drifting in the cosmos.
Destroying a massive flagship was not an impossible feat for cosmic-level beings or ships armed with planet-killing weapons. Thanos himself could tear a fleet apart with his bare hands. But to turn an entire flagship into ash within a few breaths was a feat of a different magnitude. In his knowledge, only the Power Stone could achieve such a result.
"Jason!" Thanos spoke the name aloud.
It was strange—how could Jason suddenly appear at Vormir? There was no such thing as a coincidence in this universe. Had there been a leak? No, that was impossible. The search for the Soul Stone was the highest secret of his fleet. Aside from Thanos and Gamora, no one knew their destination. How could Jason have known in advance and prepared an ambush?
Thanos replayed the recent events in his mind and instantly understood the plan hatched by Jason and Gamora. Ever since Gamora betrayed him, all his forces had been hunting her, yet they hadn’t succeeded in nearly two years. But two months ago, she was suddenly captured by a group of natives so weak they were barely worth mentioning. Thanos had felt something was off then. But in his blinding rage over hearing she had been tortured, he hadn’t followed that thread.
Looking back, Gamora’s capture was a classic "bitter meat" ruse—a ploy designed to lure him out using a map that likely never even existed. As for why she joined forces with Jason, Thanos deduced that Jason must have visited Vormir before. For some reason, Jason couldn’t obtain the Soul Stone himself, so he designed this elaborate trap. And Gamora, fueled by her hatred for him, was willing to execute the plan just to use Jason’s hand to end his life.
At this thought, Thanos felt a fresh pang of heartache. "Daughter, do you really hate me that much? Enough to sacrifice your own life..."
Sadly, Gamora was truly dead, and she would never answer his question. The most urgent matter now was to kill Jason and reclaim the other two Infinity Stones. Thanos clenched his left fist, and the Reality Stone emitted a blinding red light. In space, the dust of the began to coalesce, eventually restoring the flagship to its original form. Reality was easily reshaped by the Stone. However, when Thanos had tried to use that same power to bring Gamora back, he had failed.
"As expected, a battle between Infinity Stone wielders ultimately comes down to raw power. The Stones themselves can’t help much when they’re pitted against each other." Jason, floating in the void, shook his head as he watched the restore itself. He waved his hand, releasing a barrier of the Power stone to protect all three of his fleets.
"Darth Vader, I’ll leave that fleet to you."
"Do not worry, my Master," Vader replied with confidence.
With that, Jason erupted with energy, flying toward Vormir at lightning speed.
At the mountain peak, Thanos found the ship he arrived in and retrieved his armor. He donned it, gripped his double-bladed sword, and stood his ground, silently waiting for Jason. A moment later, a pale blue light appeared on the horizon. Thanos’s gaze hardened. "Finally here!"
The light expanded, and a violent shockwave slammed toward him. Thanos roared, choosing to tank the hit head-on.
The explosion rocked the ground and shook the sky. The blue shockwave carried terrifying energy, blasting Thanos backward and leveling the thousand-meter peak into a flat plain. Thanos stood up unharmed, adjusting his crooked helmet. Through the thick black smoke, a figure blurred past. A hurricane followed the lightning-fast speed, clearing the dust away.
A provocative voice rang in his ear: "So you’re the one they call Thanos, huh?"
Thanos looked up to see a man hovering in mid-air with his arms crossed. The man studied him with an expression of pure, wicked amusement.
"Big head, thick neck, and a chin that looks like the sole of a Yeezy... you’re basically a giant purple sweet potato," Jason mocked.
"Jason Walter!" Thanos didn’t let the insults get to him.
"Hmph, seems you’ve done your homework."
"Our goals are the same: the Stones. I sensed this day coming years ago, so I had to prepare. I spent a long time gathering footage of your battles, analyzing your powers, your combat techniques..."
"Since you say that, I’m curious," Jason said. "After years of research and analysis, you must have a thorough understanding of our relative strengths. What do you think is the probability of your victory in this fight?"
Thanos analyzed, "The effects of the Stones cancel each other out. We must fight with our true abilities. Therefore, I believe... I will be the victor!" With that, he leaped high into the air, swinging his double-bladed sword down with all his might.
Jason’s arm glowed with energy as he reached out and caught the blade with a steady grip. "I’ll have to reserve judgment on that conclusion. Also, that statement you just made? It was only half right."
Jason crushed the blade with his fingers, then twisted his waist and delivered a kick that sent Thanos flying. Thanos landed in a deep crater, stood up, dusted off his armor, and tossed aside the broken hilt.
"Only half right? And what about the other half?"
Jason said, "If you won’t say it, I will. Your Reality Stone can modify the rules—even if I cut you into pieces, you can restore yourself instantly. But my Power Stone has an Absolute Barrier. Even if I stand here and let you hit me for a whole day, it won’t break."
"So, you believe our battle is destined to be a draw?"
"No!" Jason looked at the Infinity Gauntlet on Thanos’s left hand and smiled. "The key to victory lies in who can take the Stones from the other. The moment one person obtains four Stones, the battle is over. Your Stones are right there on your gauntlet. But do you know where mine are hidden?"
Thanos looked up at him, his gaze heavy and focused. This was the question that had troubled him for a long time. Despite pouring resources and effort into gathering intelligence, he still didn’t know where Jason kept the Infinity Stones. The dwarven smiths on Nidavellir hadn’t built a weapon for Jason to control them, and there was no record of Jason ever using them in a traditional way.
"Seems I guessed right." Jason’s lips curled into a smile. One kept the Stones in the open; the other had absorbed them into his own body. Jason’s bold decision from years ago had already set the stage for the end of this war.
Jason blurred, appearing behind Thanos. "It’s over!" An energy blade materialized in his hand as he swung for Thanos’s arm. Jason’s explosive speed was beyond Thanos’s expectations, but he didn’t give up, clenching the Infinity Gauntlet.
The Reality Stone flared red! Thanos swapped his position with a massive boulder in the distance. Jason sliced the rock clean through.
"Just give up! You are destined to lose this fight!"
Thanos frowned, keeping a tight grip on the Gauntlet. "Not necessarily. If you’ve hidden the Stones, I’ll just force them out." With that, the Soul Stone flared with an orange light.
Jason’s heart took a massive hit! His movements stopped abruptly as he felt his soul being violently wrenched from his body. He had intended to keep a card hidden, but it seemed it was coming out sooner than expected.
"Fine. You succeeded. But the result might disappoint you." As he spoke, Jason’s pupils turned golden. The power of the Mind Stone enveloped his body, and the force pulling at his soul vanished. His soul snapped back into place.
Seeing those golden eyes, Thanos looked horrified. "You absorbed the Stones into your body... No, that’s impossible. Many have tried, and they were all burned to ash. You are just a mortal, how could you..."
"The truth is right in front of you, yet you choose to ignore it?" Jason said flatly.
Faced with the truth, Thanos, who had been confident in his victory, finally showed a flicker of panic. As Jason said, the key was stealing the Stones. This was supposed to be a fair duel. But who could have thought Jason wouldn’t play fair and would hide the Stones inside himself?
This presented a massive problem for Thanos: how to get them out? Perhaps he could do it after cutting Jason into pieces, but Jason had the Power Stone protecting him. Regular attacks couldn’t break the barrier, and Stone-based attacks wouldn’t work—it was an infinite loop. Conversely, Thanos wore a gauntlet that screamed "I have the Stones" to the whole world. If Jason found one opening to cut off his arm, the Stones were gone. This fight was fundamentally unfair.
"It’s too dark. Let’s get some light in here!" Jason slowly raised his left hand toward the asteroid blocking the sun, his pupils turning purple. "Arrgh!" He roared, clenching his hand into a claw and pulling it to the right. A titanic force pulled the asteroid, sending it hurtling toward Vormir.
Thanos turned to look, completely shaken by the display of power. "There’s no need for such trouble just for some light." The Reality Stone flared red, and the asteroid disintegrated into a massive swarm of bats that flew toward Jason, blotting out the sky.
Jason frowned. "Now it’s even darker and I can’t see anything. I hate the dark, and I hate bats even more." He turned his purple gaze toward the swarm. Instantly, the bats caught fire under the purple glow and turned to ash. With the asteroid gone, sunlight finally bathed Vormir again.
"Hmph, much better." Jason smiled, another energy blade forming in his hand.
A beam of sword-light pierced Thanos’s body, but there was no feeling of hitting a solid object. Jason turned around to see Thanos and frowned. "Is it fun hiding like a rat? Why don’t you hide for the rest of your life?"
Thanos countered, "A battle can be divided into stages. A temporary retreat does not mean final defeat."
Through the exchange, he had realized the reality: he couldn’t win against Jason with his current strength. But Jason couldn’t kill him or take his Stones easily either. As long as he held onto the Gauntlet, he was invincible.
"Sigh... if we keep fighting like this, we’ll never have a winner." Jason sighed, and the energy blade vanished. "Let’s talk." Jason sat down cross-legged on the ground.
"Talk about what?" Thanos didn’t lower his guard for a second.
Jason pretended to think, then pointed at him. "Tell me... what is your dream?"
"..." Thanos found it hard to adjust to Jason’s sudden shift in style. "Gamora was under the Mind Stone’s control for over a year. Didn’t you ask her?"
Jason explained, "She told me. But when things come from someone else’s mouth, they’re always tainted by subjective feelings. And her feelings for you..."
"I understand. She hates me," Thanos said with a hint of regret. The Reality Stone flared red, and a massive image floated in the air. Jason looked up to see a beautiful, modern city with lush green mountains and clear water.
"Where is this?"
"My former home—Titan."
"Not bad. Looks like a painting."
"Yes. But Titan, like many planets in the universe, had an exploding population and limited resources. As we faced extinction, I found a solution."
"Genocide?"
"Yes. But it was entirely random. No bias, no distinction between rich or poor, high or low. Completely impartial. They called me a madman. And the result... was exactly as I predicted."
The image changed. The city crumbled, and the beautiful landscape turned into a wasteland of sand. "I was a lucky survivor, and it only reinforced my ideal. If life in the universe is to continue, half of it must be culled. If I have all six Stones, it only takes a snap of my fingers. They would simply vanish, without pain."
"And then?"
"And then... I could sit and watch the sunrise in a peaceful universe."
"Understood!" Jason nodded slowly. "We both need all six Stones. Staying at this stalemate helps no one. I need to hold the Stones permanently, while you only want to wipe out half the universe’s life. Our dreams don’t actually conflict. So... let’s join forces."
