The young girl was unsure how to react. Her gaze shifted from his features down to the hand he extended towards her.
Instead of accepting it or confessing her own desires, she suddenly lunged forward. Her small frame collided with his leg, and she wrapped her arms around it with all the might she possessed.
Jax knelt down, but this gesture did little to alter the situation. She attempted to clamber onto his chest, overwhelmed and unable to articulate the complex emotions swirling within her. Words failed her; experience was lacking. All she had was an instinctual urge to hold on, to never let go.
Her voice, muffled against his coat, trembled as she whispered, "Mister... may I... may I cry now?"
Jax gently pressed her head against his chest. "You never need to ask for permission to feel your own emotions. What a silly girl."
"But yes, of course, you can. Just promise me you won't ever cry for the same reason again."
She finally allowed herself to release everything. Every tear seemed to wash away the accumulated pain from lifetimes of suffering—the profound loneliness, the stinging betrayals, the agonizing experiments, the humiliating regressions, the cyclic torment of dying and awakening to the same nightmarish existence. Now, for the very first time across all those lives, she experienced the warmth of someone choosing to shield her without any expectation of return.
She had no idea how long this moment of solace would endure, but she was profoundly grateful it had come to pass.
The onlookers remained silent, observing the extraordinary scene unfold. A professor, known for his cold, chaos-driven, mass-murdering tendencies, now knelt in a forest, completely subdued by a child's tears. While his methods and teachings remained, in their own way, chaotic, he undeniably displayed a deeply human side.
Even Echidna, the fifth woman observing the tableau, felt a surge of genuine happiness amidst her shock. She mused internally, 'So this is how you encountered him, Tempris. It wasn't the grand, destined romantic meeting I had envisioned. It's a shame he only sees you as a daughter figure.'
A chilling thought then struck her. 'Wait a moment. Did she feel the same way towards him? Please tell me you didn't use your powers to seek him out across other timelines, you manipulative witch.'

Some time elapsed, and Jax, accompanied by the others, began their journey towards a nearby city.
The girls followed a short distance behind, with the exception of Lavinia, who walked directly beside Jax. She persistently tried to engage the child, who had been silently holding Jax's finger and walking alongside him.
Lavinia leaned down, her smile capable of enchanting the most stubborn creatures. "Oh, come now, little cupcake! Why won't you tell your Big Sis what our formidable professor confided in you?"
There was no response.
"Are you truly going to ignore me? Keeping secrets already? My heart! Your big sister is going to be so disheartened!" She dramatically clutched her chest. "I might just start weeping right here! Just look at my eyes!"
She fluttered her eyelashes, feigning a tragic sniffle.
"Just a tiny clue? Pretty please? I promise I won't breathe a word to those other grumpy girls! If you tell me, I'll even share my snacks with you!"
The girl turned her face away with a sharp huff. "How many times must I repeat myself? It's highly confidential! And for your information, my name is not 'little cupcake'!"
Lavinia feigned a shocked gasp. "Oh! Well, now that you mention it, my apologies! What is your name, then?"
The girl concentrated, her small brow furrowing. "Um... if my memory serves, it was Tira? No, wait, it was Tia. Hmm, that was the one before that..." She began counting on her invisible fingers. "And Tara was the one before that..."
She looked up at Lavinia, genuine puzzlement in her eyes. "Big Sis, I can't quite recall. But it definitely started with a T. In our fourth year, the priests assign us letters for our names, and mine was always T. However, with each regression, my name shifts, so I no longer know which one is truly mine."
Lavinia tapped her chin thoughtfully. "That certainly explains things. But why not choose a completely new one? You could ask the professor to give you a name if you wish."
The girl's eyes brightened at the suggestion. Yet, she hesitated to ask Jax, who continued to look straight ahead, seemingly oblivious to their entire conversation.
Meanwhile, Jax heard every word exchanged. Internally, he was in a state of panic, countless names cycling through his mind, none feeling quite right.
Then, the girl's small, hesitant voice reached his ears, "Mister, could you—"
Jax cut her off before she could complete her sentence. "How about Tempris?"
The girl blinked in surprise.
"It signifies 'the one who commands her own time.' Until this very moment, the world and your recurring nightmares dictated your timeline. They forced you to relive the same dreadful days endlessly. But that era has concluded."
He kept his gaze fixed on the path ahead, his expression unreadable.
"I chose Tempris because, from this second forward, you are the master of your own destiny. Your time belongs solely to you, to be spent as you see fit."
His expression was unreadable, yet his peripheral vision intensely studied her reaction. He was as anxious as a gamer choosing a username, desperately hoping for acceptance from the game’s character.
A smile bloomed on her face, conveying everything he needed to know.
She whispered the name to herself, savoring the sound. "Tempris." Repeating it, "Tempris." Then, with eyes alight, she turned to Lavinia. "Big Sis, you can call me Tempris from now on!"
She faced Jax again, her expression radiating a brightness unseen for centuries. "Thank you, Mister. For bestowing a name upon me. I give you my word, I shall not forget it this time."
Jax's heart began to race, but not with the familiar surge he felt when encountering Astrid, Nerith, Beatrix, or even Adelina. This was a different sensation, a tightening in his chest he’d never experienced before, one he strove diligently to conceal from his features.
Suddenly, Delphine, who had been walking ahead in stony silence, stopped dead. "Impossible," she declared.
Evangeline followed Delphine's gaze. They had arrived at a low precipice, offering a vista of a city below. Standing guard at its gates were two colossal statues, figures Evangeline recognized instantly.
She, too, froze, her voice laced with disbelief. "What is transpiring? Where have we come to? Those statues represent our ancestors from six hundred years past—the sovereign rulers of the Heutria Empire."
Her eyes widened. "The very empire that was later fractured into what we now know as Veldora and Meridax."
