Chapter 3 System Space
“Enter the System Space,” Lin Jing commanded silently within his mind.
The environment ahead of him quickly turned hazy, and he felt as though a strange force was wrapping around his physical form.
A moment later, Lin Jing opened his eyes to find himself standing inside the System Space.
“Welcome back, Master,” a robotic, emotionless voice vibrated near his ear.
“System, display the status panel.”
“As you wish, Master.”
Immediately following his request, a holographic display manifested in the air before him.
System Space (Level 1) Remaining Time: 1 hour 59 minutes Host: Lin Jing
Spirit Field Range: 10 mu Spiritual Energy Density: 1 Time Flow Speed: 1 Daily Entry Time: 2 hours Required for Upgrade: (0/100 Harvest Points) Special Function: Vigilance (While the host is inside the System Space, the surrounding area in the real world is monitored. The host will receive an immediate notification during any emergency.) Observation: (The host can view the real world from the System Space.) (Note: Observation mode synchronizes the host’s perception with real-world time.)
Reaching out, Lin Jing tapped his name on the screen, causing his personal statistics to materialize.
Lin Jing (23/90) Spiritual Root: Five Elements Mixed Spirit Root (Low Grade) Cultivation: Qi Refinement First Layer (99%) Cultivation Technique: Qingyuan Dao Method (First Layer), Qingyuan Sword Control Technique (Beginner) Secondary Occupation: None
“It really has reached 99%.”
A knowing grin touched Lin Jing’s lips as he looked at the Cultivation entry. After enduring a long period of diligent practice, a breakthrough was finally within reach.
To some, the first layer of Qi Refinement was a minor step, but for a cultivator with a Low Grade Five Elements Mixed Spirit Root, it was a barrier as daunting as a massive canyon. This had been the struggle of the original owner of this body.
Despite beginning his cultivation as a child under his father’s tutelage, he had remained stuck at the first layer of Qi Refinement for years. Most Sects would have discarded someone with such poor talent instantly.
He had only been granted entry because his father had once performed a great service for the Qingyuan Sword Sect. Now that he was finally on the verge of crossing that threshold, Lin Jing found it impossible to suppress his excitement.
Success was close, and anyone would feel a rush of adrenaline. Furthermore, having absorbed the memories of his predecessor, Lin Jing felt a deep-seated bitterness regarding his past stagnation.
He inhaled sharply, feeling a wave of potent Spiritual Energy wash over him.
While the concentration of Spiritual Energy here wasn't quite as high as in Steward Li’s private courtyard, it was comparable. Progressing here was significantly more efficient than in the outside world.
The primary drawback was the time limit; he was only permitted to stay in the System Space for two hours each day.
Because of this, Lin Jing made sure every second counted, spending his time either tending to the Spirit Rice or deep in meditation.
The space contained 10 mu of Spirit Field. To upgrade the System Space, he needed to plant crops and collect Harvest Points once they reached maturity.
The field of golden Spirit Rice stretching out before him was his current project, with the first section almost ready for harvest.
Checking the display with practiced ease, Lin Jing saw that the mu of Spirit Rice directly in front of him would be mature in three days.
With these resources, he wouldn't have to fear survival even if he was kicked out of the Qingyuan Sword Sect.
Still, while farming could sustain him in the Fang Market at the base of the mountain, he knew strength was the only true currency for survival. In the Cultivation World, the strong preyed upon the weak, and threats were everywhere.
Lin Jing sat in a cross-legged position and began circulating his cultivation technique, drawing the surrounding Spiritual Energy toward himself.
……
“Warning, warning! An intruder has entered the surveillance zone. Host, please react immediately.”
The system's alarm blared just as he reached the peak of his breakthrough. Lin Jing’s brow furrowed in frustration as he was forced to halt his progress.
“Who would bother me at an hour like this?”
He remained cautious and stayed within the System Space. He knew that anyone visiting this late likely harbored ill intentions.
“I need to see who it is first,” Lin Jing muttered.
“System, turn on Observation Mode.”
“Understood, Master.”
Suddenly, Lin Jing’s perspective shifted to a bird’s-eye view, looking down upon his small house from above.
He moved his mental focus to the front of the building. Two figures were approaching, keeping their auras suppressed. It was difficult to identify them in the shadows at first.
However, within the alert zone, Observation Mode allowed him to zoom in and view the scene from any angle. Lin Jing adjusted the view and finally saw their faces clearly.
“It’s them?” Lin Jing gasped, shocked. “Why are those two together?”
He recognized the pair: one was Manager Li, and the other was his neighbor, Yuan Bo.
A late-night visit from them was a bad omen. Lin Jing decided to watch and wait to uncover their true goal.
Upon reaching the door, the two men paused to listen for any sound inside.
“Wait, it’s quiet.”
Manager Li pushed against the door.
“Creak…”
The door swung open. They peered into the room only to find the bed empty and no sign of Lin Jing.
“I thought you said he stayed inside and never left?” Manager Li turned to Yuan Bo, his expression darkening.
“I watched him go in, and I swear I never saw him come back out.”
“Then why is the room empty?”
“I… I don't know.”
Yuan Bo stared at the empty space, stammering. Then, a thought occurred to him, and he turned back to Manager Li.
“Uncle, you worked so hard to get Lin Jing kicked out of the Sect, but then that Han fellow interfered.”
“Do you think Han Jing took him away in secret?”
Listening to them, Lin Jing realized that Yuan Bo was indeed the one who ruined the Spirit Field, but the true architect behind the scheme was Manager Li.
“The ‘Han Jing’ they mentioned must be Senior Han,” Lin Jing realized.
“No, that’s impossible.”
“Han Jing is too honorable for such underhanded tactics. If he intended to help, he would do it in the open.”
Manager Li stepped toward the table and spotted the packed bags.
“His belongings are still here. He hasn't fled yet.”
“Uncle, what's the plan? Should we stay here and wait for him?”
Lin Jing’s heart raced at those words. He only had two hours of time in the System Space.
Once those two hours were up, the system would force him back into reality. If they were still waiting, he would be trapped with no way to defend himself.
Manager Li thought for a moment before answering.
“We’ll search the area first. If we find nothing, we'll reconsider.”
“I can't linger here long, or Han might get suspicious.”
The two men then began to ransack the small house.
“What are they searching for?”
Lin Jing watched with a frown. In his memories, his father had left him nothing but a few parting words of wisdom. He was essentially penniless; he couldn't imagine what they thought he was hiding.
“Warning, warning! Another intruder has crossed the alert perimeter. Host, please respond.”
“Another one?”
Lin Jing shifted his perspective and saw a figure descending rapidly toward the house on a flying sword.
“Li Yeming, do you really think I’m afraid to kill you just because the Elders have your back?”
