The wizard legion pushed deeper into the behemoths' camp, but the vast and complex terrain slowed their advance. Behemoths used fortified positions and dispersed attacks to repel the wizards. Facing a stalemate, Jie Ming proposed a radical plan: using an engineering-type magic to warp all matter in the region. This required over ten days of preparation, during which Jie Ming discreetly laid out array nodes while the legion maintained the front.

Inside the behemoth camp, a wizard squad was fighting a behemoth and the servant army under its command on one of the plane fragments.

The fragment’s surface was covered in towering rock strata and broken mountain ranges, and thousands of fragments of every size drifted around it.

The behemoth used the terrain to keep changing the direction of its attack, its colossal body barreling about and smashing several mountain ranges to rubble.

The servant army, meanwhile, swept around the flank, trying to cut off the wizards’ line of retreat.

The seventh-level wizard in command directed his team to release magic in rotation, using dense firepower to hold down the behemoth’s offensive and pulling back in time whenever it readied a charge at their array.

After a short tangle, the wizards at last found an opening and forced the behemoth back toward a broken canyon.

But before they could press their advantage further, several more behemoths in the distance came hurrying over with servant armies in tow.

At the same moment, Dixon’s order came through over their magic network terminals.

The seventh-level wizard glanced at the steadily approaching enemies and shook his head. “A pity.”

Even as he said it, he raised a hand and beckoned to the wizards around him. “Whole squad, fall back! Don’t get drawn into a fight!”

The wizards turned at once and left swiftly along routes they had scouted in advance.

Seeing this, the behemoths immediately sped up and gave chase.

The distance between the two sides closed rapidly.

Just as the pursuers were about to charge past the edge of the plane fragment, a beam of light suddenly fell from far away.

Boom!

The behemoth at the very front was struck by the beam, and its colossal body shuddered. The scaled armor on its body shattered piece after piece, and before it could even roar it was swallowed by the surging energy.

Right after that, a second and third beam fell in succession, blasting the behemoths behind it to death along with the servant armies at their sides.

The pursuing force dissolved into chaos in an instant.

The remaining behemoths immediately began looking for cover to hide themselves.

After fighting the wizards for this long, the behemoths that charged mindlessly forward at the first sign of attack had long since died out, and the survivors had all been forced to put to use thinking organs that had sat idle for who knew how many years.

After the behemoths pulled back inside the plane fragment, they found that no further attacks came.

One behemoth, seeing this, instinctively went to chase the retreating wizard squad again, and was promptly blasted to powder by an incoming beam.

Seeing that, the other behemoths in hiding pulled their heads in and made no further attempt to pursue.

Far away, having watched the wizard squad withdraw successfully, Dixon had already lowered his raised finger, and the energy lingering at its tip quickly dissipated.

He glanced at the information feeding back on his magic network terminal, then turned his head toward Jie Ming at his side:

“All right. As you requested, every formation has withdrawn from the designated area.”

Jie Ming gazed at the vast camp in the distance and nodded. “Then I’ll begin.”

As he spoke, the void behind Jie Ming abruptly lit up.

At first there were only a few dozen faint threads of light, but then more and more array outlines appeared one after another.

They spread in every direction with Jie Ming at the center, crisscrossing and nesting within one another to form layer upon layer of intricate geometric structure.

In a few short moments, the array had expanded to a scale of millions of kilometers!

Inside the plane fragments, the nodes that had lain dormant until now lit up one after another, becoming points of starlight scattered among countless continents and rock strata.

The starlight grew denser and denser, gradually merging into a single sheet, and finally formed a colossal array that covered the entire behemoth main camp.

The behemoths noticed the anomaly at once.

The behemoths that had been resting in the depths raised their heads one after another, sensing the energy flows around them beginning to slip out of their control.

Some of the stronger behemoths immediately charged toward the outside of the camp, trying to destroy the outer nodes before the array came fully into operation.

But the wizard legion had long since made ready.

Elite formation after elite formation bore down from different directions, the light of spells weaving across the void.

The terrifying net of firepower forced the behemoths that wanted to break out of the camp to halt, with no choice but to fight the wizards blocking their way.

The more desperately they tried to break through, the more they were herded toward the engagement zones that had already been set for them.

Dixon, meanwhile, led a group of high-level wizards guarding the vicinity of the most critical outer nodes, using his fate perception to discover the enemy’s lines of thrust in advance and moving nearby formations in time to plug the defensive line.

“Regions three and four, close-combat unit three, move up and hold them! Regions seven and nine, support units one, two and three, lay down covering fire!”

As the orders spread, large numbers of wizards released spells at once.

Attacks of every kind fell one after another, driving back the behemoths assaulting the line again and again.

Whenever a powerful enemy occasionally broke through the first line of defense, the second line would immediately take over.

And the moment danger appeared, Dixon would act personally, using attacks to break the behemoths’ rhythm of assault.

As time passed, Jie Ming finally raised his hand.

His expression grew focused, and golden light slowly kindled at his forehead.

The Fate Subsystem began running at high speed, continuously collating data in the hundreds of millions and feeding it back to the whole array.

“Breathing Soil Creation.”

At Jie Ming’s soft words, the colossal array roared into motion.

The points of starlight scattered inside the plane fragments responded in sync.

They lit up all at once, establishing stable links among themselves.

Right after that, an intangible force spread out from every node, racing along the connecting structures between the plane fragments.

In that instant, the entire camp seemed to be enveloped by a vast, invisible net.

And then the behemoths discovered, to their horror, that the ground beneath their feet was beginning to shrink.

The matter making up the continents was being forcibly reshaped. Terrain that had once stretched for hundreds of thousands of kilometers rapidly grew compact under the array’s influence, as rock, minerals and residual elemental energy gathered together along the predetermined structure.

The plane fragments fitted into one another began to change as well.

Their solid junctions were no longer obstacles to the magic’s operation; instead they became channels for conducting the transforming power.

The array brought the material structures scattered across the different regions under its control one by one, then refined and recombined them according to the established laws.

And so the behemoths’ camp, vast beyond measuring, began to contract rapidly from the outside inward.

“Roar!!”

One behemoth sensed the danger and swung its forelimbs violently, trying to smash the rock strata beside it.

But before its attack could even be launched, it felt a force unlike anything it had ever known bearing down on it.

It struggled with all its might, the scaled armor on its body lighting up piece after piece as it tried to resist the refinement with its own strength.

Sadly, it was of no use whatsoever.

Its body began to warp; its once-solid bones and scaled armor were forcibly dismantled, and its colossal structure of flesh and blood turned to churning flows of energy and matter in the array, which were then refined anew and merged into the ever-shrinking continental remains.

Screams of agony rang out one after another.

The behemoths that had not yet escaped the camp, along with the vast servant armies swept up in it, all lost control of their bodies under the magic’s influence.

The weaker beings were refined away before they could so much as struggle, while the few powerful behemoths that still tried to resist could do no more than slow the pace at which they were swallowed.

Even as he maintained the casting, Jie Ming kept adjusting the rate of refinement in each region, making sure the vast camp did not cause the whole magic to collapse through some local imbalance.

Countless plane fragments kept contracting and fusing within the magic.

The wizards in the distance had already stopped fighting, and all of them turned to look toward the region where the change was taking place.

They watched continent after continent shrink at a speed visible to the naked eye, the gigantic rock strata that had once spanned the void gradually vanishing, and the core regions the behemoths had relied on to build their defenses beginning to collapse inward as well.

As the refinement went deeper, the elemental and law structures inside the entire camp were combed through along with everything else.

Vast amounts of chaotic energy and matter were stripped out, processed by the array, and merged back into the main body.

This was the characteristic of engineering-type magic: once it was successfully started, the overwhelming majority of the energy that ran it came from the target itself.

Before long, a clump of Breathing Soil took shape within the array at the core region.

Those behemoths that had not yet been fully refined, upon touching the array around the core, were swiftly dragged into it as well and became part of the Breathing Soil.

Moments later, as the last continent-level plane fragment was swallowed, the entire camp finally finished contracting.

Jie Ming slowly closed his five fingers.

The array enveloping a region of millions of kilometers began to shut down layer by layer, and the light that had blanketed the heavens receded quickly, leaving only that thick, earth-yellow radiance at the core.

Within the radiance, an enormous block of Breathing Soil floated silently.

Having refined an immeasurable quantity of mass, its volume was already close to that of a planet!

“Hssss!!!”

For a moment, everyone could not help sucking in a sharp breath.

Quite a few of the wizards had already known about the plan.

But when this absurd result actually appeared before their eyes, every notion they had held about its scale seemed pale and feeble.

A seventh-level wizard in charge of frontline combat slowly lowered the staff in his hand.

“This… is the effect of just one spell?”

No one answered him.

Because the answer already lay before their eyes.

The regions that would have taken tens of thousands of wizard formations to clear one by one had been thoroughly dealt with by Jie Ming using a single engineering-type magic, just like that.

“My god…” someone finally could not help saying under his breath.

“If this magic were used on other battlefields, what would be the point of those strongholds built out of planes?”

“Hssss… I don’t dare think about it. I don’t dare.”

Those words struck a chord with more than a few.

The wizard civilization was in no way short of powerful attack magic; there were even many spells whose instantaneous destructive power far exceeded that of Breathing Soil Creation.

But for targets of this kind, vast in scale and complex in structure, destruction was no easy matter.

Once the total quantity of matter exceeded a certain scale, mere destruction of its outward form did not accomplish much.

After all, even if you blew a mountain to pieces, a mountain made of rubble would still form in the same place.

To annihilate a camp of this magnitude through attacks, every bit of its matter had to be completely obliterated!

Yet obliterating a camp completely required an enormous investment of energy, and it would render the vast resources inside it worthless.

Clearing it piece by piece, on the other hand, required manpower and time, and meant bearing the casualties that kept piling up.

But Jie Ming had not only obliterated vast amounts of the enemy’s matter; by the look of it, he had even manufactured a new material!

He had not just eliminated the enemy’s defensive stronghold; he had turned a once-maddening obstacle into a batch of materiel of astonishing value.

That was what shocked the wizards most of all.
