I Arrived At Wizard World While Cultivating Immortality Chapter 985: An Old Acquaintance
Previously on I Arrived At Wizard World While Cultivating Immortality...
Jie Ming first contacted the clone of the artificial intelligence Felix and had it help him pick out a suitable legion for the test, and search the current war zones for a battlefield fit for live-combat verification.
The first version of Leap Power had been in circulation in the wizard civilization for several hundred years, and through the practical use and feedback of large numbers of wizards, Jie Ming had accumulated a considerable wealth of data.
Drawing on that data, he had at last completed the improvements for the new version, raising the theoretical upper limit on power amplification from fivefold to tenfold.
That meant that, with full command of the relevant technique, a wizard could mobilize elemental force equal to ten times his ordinary casting capacity.
What Jie Ming hoped for this time was to use this live-combat test to confirm whether the new version could run stably in a complex battlefield environment.
“Felix, has anything suitable been arranged on the legion side?”
The projection from the magic network terminal answered promptly:
“Three wizard legions meeting the conditions have been found. All of them have ample combat experience, their members’ law systems are relatively complete, and they are equipped with sufficient auxiliary personnel, which can satisfy your testing requirements for compatibility with different laws and for the effects of legion coordination.”
“Very good.”
Jie Ming read through the materials, quickly picked out one legion of suitable scale among them, and had Felix send the technical materials for the new version of Leap Power to the wizards of that legion.
“Have them familiarize themselves with the technique first and complete basic training according to the materials. Once I arrive, we’ll run the formal test.”
“Understood.”
Jie Ming closed the legion files and was about to go on to check the battlefield situation when Felix suddenly spoke:
“In addition, considering that you will need to enter the battlefield in person this time, I have arranged a guard wizard for you to ensure your safety.”
Jie Ming was not surprised by this.
He was, after all, still only a sixth-level wizard. Even with combat power far beyond his level, that did not mean he could guarantee his safety in high-level warfare.
Especially this time, when what he needed to test was the performance of an entire legion in live combat.
The battlefield could change in an instant. If something unexpected happened, he might not have enough attention to spare for both his own safety and the experimental records.
Having a powerful guard along really would reduce the risks a good deal.
“Who have you arranged? What level?”
“An eighth-level wizard specializing in fate-discipline laws. Unfortunately, with the fighting now so fierce, it was simply not possible to arrange Wizard Fate for you, so this time I could only arrange another eighth-level fate wizard for you.”
Jie Ming nodded without the least surprise. The Fate Law was simply too useful, after all; if the aim was staying alive, that was indeed the most suitable choice.
On top of that, with the boost of Leap Power, today’s eighth-level wizards could hold their own even against ninth-level creatures. A guard of that level was already enough to handle the overwhelming majority of emergencies.
“In that case, when can you arrange for the two of us to meet?”
“The other party is already on the way to your laboratory and will arrive very soon.”
“That is quick.”
Jie Ming gave a laugh and asked no more, turning instead to sort through the materials on the battlefield he was about to head for.
Before long, the laboratory received a teleportation request.
“Come in.”
As silver light rippled out across the teleportation array, a man in a dark wizard’s robe stepped down from it.
Jie Ming looked up, and his previously calm expression changed at once.
The other man had clearly seen him too. Their eyes met, and the two of them actually froze at the same moment.
“It’s actually you, little fellow?”
“Wizard Dixon?” Jie Ming was somewhat surprised.
He had never imagined that the guard Felix had arranged for him would turn out to be Dixon.
Dixon was clearly startled as well, but he soon broke into a hearty smile. “Haha, I never thought the subject of this mission would be you! When I heard the name, I assumed it was someone with the same name. I didn’t expect it to really be you, little fellow.”
He strode forward and clapped Jie Ming on the shoulder.
“It’s been a long time, Jie Ming. You’re really something now. You’ve actually become a recipient of the Level-One Cultivation Protocol, and developed a technology like Leap Power too.”
Jie Ming greeted him with a smile as well. “It really has been a long time. I never expected that in just a few thousand years you’d already have advanced to the eighth level.”
“Just luck.” Dixon shook his head with a laugh. “After that mission, I went back to my teacher’s faction and buried myself in research, and advanced quite unexpectedly.”
The two of them had come to know each other back in a much earlier time.
Back then, Jie Ming had taken part in an annihilation mission against the Triad Plane Cluster.
At the time, Dixon had been one of the three seventh-level wizards leading the expeditionary force.
That mission had originally been nothing more than a sweep of a special plane, but no one had imagined that after entering the plane, the expeditionary force would encounter a special existence called the “Mycelord.”
That thing had fused itself with rules and concepts, forming a mindless creature of rules and concepts.
And the expeditionary force of the time, without knowing it, had very nearly carried things bearing the Mycelord’s concept back to the wizard civilization as spoils of war, which would have amounted to violating the fundamental contract that could not be betrayed.
Had the contract truly been breached, the entire expeditionary force would have suffered a devastating blow for it.
Back then, Jie Ming, relying on the adaptability of his Body Forging Method, had sensed that something was wrong.
And at that critical moment, Dixon’s fate had actively guided him to notice Jie Ming’s expression.
So he had halted the original operation in time, ordering the expeditionary force to suspend its return, and in the end had kept the entire company from being destroyed for unknowingly breaching the contract.
That they had survived that mission at all, Jie Ming’s spiritual sense had played the key part, and Dixon’s Fate Law had turned that alertness into the right action in time.
So although the two had never worked together at length afterward, each had left a deep impression on the other.
Now that they met again, naturally it took no great time to establish trust.
Dixon looked at Jie Ming and laughed. “Back in the Triad Plane Cluster, I already thought you were a very interesting young man. Later I even made a point of reading your file. I never imagined you’d grow all the way to where you are today.”
Jie Ming said modestly, “The main thing was that your judgment at the time was quick enough. If you hadn’t decided to halt the operation, I alone might not have been able to get everyone out of danger.”
“Haha, no need to be polite.” Dixon waved it off.
“In the end, we all survived because we worked together. Now that we’re working together again, it’s even simpler. From here on, leave your safety to me!”
He patted his chest, his expression full of confidence.
“As long as I’m still here, I won’t let anything happen to you easily.”
At that, Jie Ming felt a little more settled.
An eighth-level fate wizard had strength enough and ample battlefield experience, and the two of them had worked together once before, so each understood the other’s way of doing things.
A guard like that truly put his mind at ease.
“Then let me thank Wizard Dixon in advance.”
“Now you’re being too formal.”
Dixon laughed heartily. “We fought side by side back then, more or less, and now we’re heading to the battlefield together again. Just call me Dixon.”
Jie Ming nodded with a smile. “All right. Then I’ll be counting on you, Dixon.”
Just then, the magic network terminal to one side lit up, and Felix projected its figure once more:
“Both parties have made contact. The legion has received the materials for the new version of Leap Power and is currently carrying out basic study and training. Logistical supplies, test equipment and auxiliary recording devices are also ready. You may proceed to the designated area and complete the handover of command with the legion.”
Jie Ming nodded. “Got it.”
He then turned to Jack. “Are the materials all ready?”
Jack answered at once. “All in order, Teacher.”
Having confirmed the final arrangements, the three of them walked together to the teleportation array in the laboratory.
As spatial fluctuations lit up, the teleportation array gradually activated.
The next moment, the light of the teleportation array swallowed the three figures.
