Jie Ming delves into sword cultivator classics seeking to understand nature cultivation. He finds their idealistic explanations, focusing on will and intent over concrete mechanisms, frustrating. However, he begins to suspect that their "idealism" might be a form of higher power manipulation, similar to how ninth-level beings alter reality through thought.

In the laboratory in the real world, the magic network terminal was displaying a new notification.

Jie Ming had still been savoring his discovery of a moment ago, but when he saw the name on the notification, his eyes lit up at once.

It was Jack.

The message was simple: after nearly six hundred years of trial and accumulation, Jack had completed the advancement task Jie Ming had set him back then, and had formally broken through to the sixth level, becoming a sixth-level combat wizard.

When Jie Ming finished reading, a satisfied smile surfaced on his face. “That kid. He’s finally done it.”

Back then, he had handed a plane to Jack and required his disciple to conquer the entire world on his own, as his trial for advancement to the sixth level.

Now Jack had not only taken the plane successfully but had used it to complete his own accumulation, and had at last stepped into the sixth level.

That showed he already had the ability to take on high-level tasks independently.

Jie Ming immediately sent him an invitation.

Very soon, a familiar figure appeared in the laboratory’s reception area.

Jack wore a black combat wizard’s robe. His figure was straighter than before, and there was a new steadiness between his brows.

His aura was far keener than in his fifth-level days, and the law structure inside him had completed a clear transformation.

Above all, that keen fighting spirit of his had all but merged into his mental fluctuations.

Jie Ming looked him up and down for a moment, then nodded in satisfaction.

“Not bad. It seems these few hundred years weren’t wasted.”

At that, Jack broke into a smile, and even that keen edge of his faded considerably.

“I have to thank you, Teacher, for the trial you set me back then. If not for that plane, I’d probably be stuck at the fifth level for a long time yet.”

“The trial only gave you the opportunity. Whether you could complete it was always down to you.” Jie Ming motioned for him to sit, then sensed his state once more.

“Your combat law has gradually stabilized, and there are no obvious problems with your foundation. There’s still room for improvement, but as things stand, your strength is not bad even among the sixth level.”

Hearing that, Jack visibly relaxed.

The time he had spent at the fifth level was not long. He had kept accumulating power and knowledge throughout, but he certainly could not compare with those veteran wizards.

Now that he had his teacher’s approval, he could finally set his mind at ease.

Jie Ming, however, did not let him enjoy it for long. “You’ve come out at just the right time. I have a new research task over here that I need your help with.”

Jack immediately sat up straight. “Please go on, Teacher.”

“I’m preparing to test the new version of Leap Power.”

At that, Jack’s eyes brightened.

As one of the first wizards to take part in its testing, he naturally knew the value of Leap Power.

Over the past few hundred years, the technology had gradually spread through the wizard civilization and had played an extremely important role in the war.

But the original version had not been especially strong.

Jie Ming had been perfecting it all these years, and now he clearly had new results.

Jack said at once, “No problem!”

But Jie Ming shook his head. “You alone naturally won’t be enough.”

He called up a new battle plan and enlarged the personnel configuration and test requirements in it.

“This time, I intend to bring in an entire legion for the test.”

Jack froze for a moment. “Huh? An entire legion?”

Jie Ming nodded calmly.

“A single-person test can only verify how the technology performs on an individual. It can’t show its overall effect in complex combat. Different wizards’ laws interfere with one another, and the energy fluctuations in legion combat are far more complicated. To confirm whether the new version is truly mature, we have to run a large-scale live-combat test.”

That was the real key to deciding whether a foundational technology could be spread further.

Before, there had been no means to run such a test. But now, having obtained the Level-One Cultivation Protocol, Jie Ming naturally had sufficient authority to dispatch a legion to test it for him.

To put it bluntly, whether Jack himself served as a tester made little difference.

But Jie Ming worried that this idiot disciple of his, freshly advanced, might run into danger having to face the brutal battlefield head-on, so he simply found him a job to do, by way of getting him acclimated ahead of time.

“I suppose this counts as abusing my position for private ends.” Jie Ming thought silently to himself.

Jack, of course, knew nothing of this, and at once grew excited:

“So what’s the test target?”

Jie Ming looked toward the magic network terminal, and his expression turned somewhat graver. “The battlefield, of course.”

Three or four hundred years had passed since the war began.

Just as Jie Ming had expected, the enemy’s strength was indeed considerable. Even with combat power greatly raised, the first contact between the two sides had still produced heavy casualties.

But that earliest and most brutal period had at last eased as the wizard civilization gradually adapted to the enemy’s way of fighting.

Each front began to establish more stable offensive structures, and the frontline wizards were no longer constantly thrown onto the back foot by a lack of intelligence, as they had been at the start.

But that did not mean the war was coming to an end.

Quite the opposite: it meant the war had entered a tug-of-war, and its scale kept growing.

New war zones kept appearing, more and more plane clusters were drawn in, and the conflict between the wizard civilization and the unknown enemy had gradually evolved from the local engagements of the beginning into an all-out war advancing in several directions at once.

And as the fronts expanded, the wizard civilization’s need for high-level combat power grew ever greater.

So even if Jie Ming, with his present standing, wanted to mobilize a legion, all he could have that legion do was go from one battlefield to another.

“You should already know about the war, so I won’t say more about it here.”

Jie Ming pointed to several war zones on the map.

“You could say that thanks to this war, we have no shortage of opportunities to test. Once the test is done, we can decide whether to spread it further.”

Jack looked at the map, his mood gradually shifting from excitement to seriousness.

As a combat wizard, he had a fairly keen nose for the battlefield.

Even without having lived through this war, he could tell the risks in it from the intelligence alone.

If the new version could prove itself in legion combat, the beneficiaries would not be just a few wizards but far more of their compatriots fighting on the front lines.

“I understand.” Jack nodded. “What do you need me to do?”

“First familiarize yourself with the technical materials for the latest version, while I pick suitable legion members over here. Once the personnel have assembled, we’ll head for the designated war zone and run the first round of tests.”

Jie Ming thought for a moment and added:

“While you’re fighting on the front line, you’ll need to record the changes in every energy cycle, especially when different wizards coordinate: which structures hold stable, and where interference arises. The fighting matters, but the test data matters just as much.”

“Understood.” Jack answered solemnly.

Jie Ming looked at the disciple who had grown into a sixth-level wizard, and felt quite satisfied.
