A massive plane wizard known as Number One unleashes devastating energy attacks, obliterating enemy legions. Jie Ming and Viola witness the sheer destructive power, realizing its immense defensive capabilities and offensive potential. The enemy, a colossal centipede made of planes, retaliates, leading to a cataclysmic battle where Number One employs numerous amplification spells to enhance its already terrifying strength. Despite its raw power, Number One's crude fighting style causes collateral damage to surrounding planes.

Starfall went on recording. “As an assault unit on the main battlefield, this degree of power is entirely sufficient, excellent even. But if the mission involves gathering resources, capturing live specimens or occupying a plane intact, he isn’t really suitable. Otherwise the aftershocks of the fighting alone would be enough to destroy a great deal of valuable resources.”

“And if he operates as part of a team, his teammates will also need strong enough defensive abilities.”

Another beam blasted out. This time, because of the angle of the attack, it very nearly hit Jie Ming and the others.

Fortunately, quite possibly thanks to Wizard Fate, it only “very nearly” hit them.

Still, watching the terrifying force of the beam as it passed, everyone present shook their heads slightly.

Starfall sighed as well. “Number One doesn’t have much real combat experience. The way of fighting he learned during the experimental stage comes mostly from theoretical deduction, which is why this problem of spilled-over power crops up.”

“But it isn’t a serious flaw. As long as he builds up enough real combat experience, his control should improve step by step.”

At this point, she finally stopped recording.

The combat data had more or less all been collected.

In the distance, Number One was still locked in a fierce struggle with the super-parasite, and their power had even spread to regions farther away.

Viola floated over from the other side.

She glanced at the distant battle, then at Starfall, a hint of curiosity surfacing in her eyes.

“Come to think of it, I never did ask. How come you suddenly offered to come and help me?”

Jie Ming turned his head too, somewhat puzzled.

All along he had assumed that Viola had contacted Starfall and had her bring Number One over to deal with this super-parasite.

But going by what Viola had just said, that did not seem to be how it had happened?

Hearing her good friend’s question, Starfall pondered for a moment, then looked up at Wizard Fate beside her.

Wizard Fate noticed her gaze and nodded slightly.

With Wizard Fate’s permission, Starfall explained without hesitation. “Because Wizard Fate told me there was a very suitable test subject here.”

Jie Ming and Viola both looked at the super-parasite in the distance, which was steadily being driven back.

Viola raised an eyebrow slightly. “The test subject you mean, that’s it?”

Starfall followed her gaze for a moment, then simply shook her head.

“No. It isn’t enough.”

Jie Ming was taken aback.

That wasn’t enough?

Starfall put away her bracelet, and her gaze settled once more on the battlefield ahead.

“After these several thousand years of preparation, the plane wizard legion has more or less taken shape.”

Her tone was very calm. “This time, bringing Number One here to help Viola deal with this parasite is just something I’m doing while I’m at it.”

Starfall’s gaze moved from the battlefield and came to rest on the others.

“The real reason we came here is to run the first real combat test, in the truest sense, for the coming war.”

Jie Ming and Viola were both startled.

But what truly shocked them was the phrase “the coming war”.

“What war?” Jie Ming asked.

Starfall did not answer directly, but asked in return, “Do you still remember a certain status of yours?”

Jie Ming frowned in confusion. “…What?”

Starfall reminded him, “If I remember correctly, wasn’t your cohort the very first batch affected by the reforms the Star Ring Federation put in place?”

Jie Ming was stunned for a moment.

At Wizard Starfall’s reminder, he immediately recalled the status of “elite combat unit”, which he had long since forgotten.

It was the status he had received after passing his graduation trial, and it was also a product of the Star Ring Federation’s reform of wizard education.

Before him, wizard apprentices had had no such thing as a “graduation trial” at all.

Jie Ming’s graduation trial back then had itself been a huge experiment in reform.

He really had been among the first batch of wizard apprentices to come into contact with the reforms. What was more, the precursor of Noren Plane No. 147 had been the battlefield of his graduation trial, and even his Infernal Sulfur Plane had been a reward from that trial.

The various wars he had taken part in afterward had all been shaped by the elite combat unit system as well.

It was just that after he advanced to the sixth level and went through so many years of research and battle, he had nearly forgotten that status.

“The education reform…” he repeated in a low voice.

Starfall nodded. “Actually, the Star Ring Federation wasn’t the only one to carry out reforms back then. The Crimson Court, the Void Architecture Academy, the Anti-Entropy Alliance: all four great powers carried out education reforms at the same time. The aim was to draw out a new generation of elite wizards and select a batch of the best to serve as the main force on the battlefield.”

Jie Ming’s gaze grew grave. “True. Back then my Mentor and the others said the same thing.”

Viola asked even more directly, “So the higher-ups already knew back then that a war was coming?”

This time, however, it was not Starfall who answered her, but Wizard Fate, who had taken no part in the conversation until now:

“It isn’t that dramatic. But back then, while advancing on the main battlefield, the Third Seat did discover traces of the other side. They are fairly strong. As a whole, their power withstood a long-range strike from the Third Seat without being destroyed.”

“The Third Seat surmised that they are probably made up much like the Multiracial Alliance, only on a somewhat smaller scale than the Multiracial Alliance. Later on, though, the Third Seat seems to have discovered other problems as well. I don’t know the details myself. The end result was that those nine decided to carry out the education reforms and select a batch of elite wizards to serve as the main force on the battlefield.”

Jie Ming and Viola both fell silent.

Although Wizard Fate had not spelled out who the Third Seat or those nine were, any wizard would know.

Those nine were the only nine ninth-level wizards in wizard civilization.

Because they were also the nine arbiters of the Star Orbit Tribunal, their seats were not numbered by strength, but by the order in which they had been born.

The Third Seat was the third ninth-level wizard ever born in the history of wizard civilization.

“Since it was the Third Seat’s decision… looks like there really will be a bunch of troublesome enemies in the future.”

Even as he said so, Jie Ming’s grin grew more and more unrestrained and wild, without the slightest trace of fear.

After all, the essence of a wizard was the pursuit of knowledge.

A new enemy meant a new civilizational system, new technological paths, new kinds of resources.

To a wizard, the unknown itself was the greatest temptation of all.

What was more, going by Wizard Fate’s words, if the other side could withstand a long-range strike from the Third Seat, they must have a great many powerhouses at the ninth level among them.

The knowledge and resources of ninth-level creatures were an irresistible temptation to any wizard.

Beside him, Viola could not help laughing too. “Looks like things are going to get interesting from now on.”

Starfall looked at their expressions and said nothing, as though she had long since guessed they would react this way.
