I Arrived At Wizard World While Cultivating Immortality Chapter 767: Doubts
Jie Ming’s Law Solidification Domain had, admittedly, already reached a state where even a failed fusion would not endanger him.
But to guard against any accident, he still spent several days going through very nearly everything in the Star Ring Federation’s public database that touched on “fusing a Law Solidification Domain with a plane origin.”
From advancement guides for sixth-level wizards to plane management handbooks written by seventh-level wizards; from internal experiment reports out of the Noren Workshop to the standard operating procedures for plane fusion issued by the Star Ring Federation’s military department…
Anything he could find, he read from end to end without skipping a page.
The materials were all written in great detail.
What preparations to make before fusion, what risks came during it, how to stabilize a plane origin afterward, how to handle law backlash, how to keep the spiritual sea from falling out of sync with the plane origin… every item was laid out clearly, and even the emergency procedures were listed by the book.
But there was one question no material addressed head-on.
After fusing with a plane origin, how exactly did a wizard “see” other planes?
The materials mentioned only one thing, over and over: that every plane recovered by the wizard civilization and given its basic reconstruction would emit a special fluctuation signal outward through its plane-level array.
That signal could be received only by another plane-level array of the wizard civilization, and served to mark “this is a plane already occupied by the wizard civilization.” But from beginning to end, the materials described only this one kind of fluctuation signal.
With only one kind of signal, telling friend from foe was easy enough, but there was another point Jie Ming could not understand:
Out in the boundless Endless Chaotic Void, how did anyone tell which plane was the wizard civilization’s origin plane and which was an ordinary plane conquered later? Time and space in the Endless Chaotic Void might be scrambled past all reason, but the wizard civilization generally used artificially constructed relative coordinates to conduct searches across the void.
But to construct relative coordinates, there had to be a definite initial coordinate point.
A reference origin that every plane could measure itself against.
Beyond any doubt, the wizard civilization’s origin plane naturally served as that coordinate point.
But he had gone through several full days of material and simply could not find how that initial coordinate point was supposed to be confirmed.
Once he had made sure he had not skipped anything in the documents, Jie Ming decisively opened his magic network terminal and placed a call.
A few seconds later, the light screen lit up.
Viola’s figure appeared on it.
She was sitting in what looked like a wizard tower still halfway through its fitting-out, a row of rune conduits blinking in a debug state behind her, several energy lines still exposed, and construction materials nobody had gotten around to clearing away piled up beside her.
Her silver-gray hair was pinned up carelessly behind her head. She had evidently been in the middle of work on site and had been hauled out of it by his call.
She looked at Jie Ming first, then set the tool in her hand aside, the corner of her mouth lifting out of habit.
“Junior Brother,” she said briskly, drawing the last syllable out a little, “what troublesome question have you found for yourself this time?”
Jie Ming did not talk in circles with her. “Senior Sister, I want to ask you something. None of the materials mention how the wizard civilization’s origin plane is picked out from a heap of ordinary planes. Or is the coordinate system’s origin point something else entirely?”
Viola heard him out, but her expression stayed perfectly ordinary, as though she had long since expected the question.
“I am surprised it took you this long to ask.” She let out a small laugh, her tone carrying something that could have been teasing or approval. “Looks like you are getting ready for your first plane origin fusion. Not bad. The coordinate system’s origin point really is the wizard civilization’s origin plane. But the origin plane does not need any special marker.”
Jie Ming’s brow twitched. “It does not need a marker?”
“Right.” Viola raised her eyes, her gaze settling somewhere past the light screen, as though recalling something. “The wizard civilization’s origin plane is quite conspicuous. Once you have fused with a plane origin, just ‘look’ for the most conspicuous one and that is it.”
Then, as though something had occurred to her, she gave a wicked smile and added, unhurriedly, “Oh, and remember to lower your perception strength the first time you fuse with a plane origin.”
On his end of the call, Jie Ming was silent for a moment.
Lower his perception strength?
Ordinarily, after fusing with a plane origin, a wizard’s perception of the elements became extraordinarily keen.
The vast elemental turbulence of the Endless Chaotic Void would become the base color of his field of vision.
By the materials’ account, when a wizard at that stage perceived the Endless Chaotic Void, it felt like seeing a gorgeous, distorted field of colored points of light, each point representing a current of elemental turbulence.
To search out other planes against that chaotic background, a wizard had to look for those orderly points of light that differed slightly from the base color.
The higher the degree of order, the clearer the point, and the more it showed that the plane’s law structure was stable.
By that logic, the higher one set one’s perception, the better.
Yet Viola said to lower it.
Jie Ming did not immediately argue. He asked, “Why?”
Viola looked at him, the smile at the corner of her mouth deepening, but she did not answer directly, only saying vaguely, “Just do it. Once you have actually seen it, you will understand why I said so.”
She plainly had no intention of laying the whole answer out over a call.
“A word of warning,” she added, her tone rather more serious than before. “Do not go straight to maximum perception. That thing is not something you look at head-on with your perception cranked all the way up.”
Riddler, get out of Gotham!
Jie Ming recited that to himself a few times, stared at her for a moment, then nodded. “Understood.”
Viola made a light sound of assent, seemingly satisfied enough with his response, and raised a hand to end the call.
But just before the connection closed, Jie Ming added one more thing. “You are sure that seeing the most conspicuous one… will find me the origin plane?” “Yes.” Viola answered crisply. “You will recognize it at first glance. That thing does not need you to look for it. It will force its way into your perception on its own.”
With that, the connection cut off.
The light screen went dark.
Jie Ming stood in the middle of the quiet chamber, frowning, his head lowered in thought.
Just look for the most conspicuous one.
It sounded so casual, and yet somehow it also sounded like a judgment held with absolute certainty.
He stood there a while, and in the end chose to trust his senior sister.
Viola might like to be mysterious most of the time, but on a critical operation like this she had never once gambled with his safety. Jie Ming turned and went to the main control array of the Infernal Sulfur Plane.
Through his magic network terminal he sent a string of instructions to the Black Giant priests responsible for maintaining the plane-level array.
Before long, the array’s output began climbing step by step, and the spatial structure of the whole plane began trembling faintly along with it.
That slowly rotating golden core, the plane origin, lit with a soft, steady glow in the center of the main control room.
Only once everything was ready did Jie Ming return to the quiet chamber.
He took his stance and slowly unfolded his own Law Solidification Domain.
The dark golden domain extended out of the quiet chamber.
Over all these years, the Law Solidification Domain’s coverage had reached a scale of several tens of kilometers.
But considering that after fusing with a plane origin the domain’s intensity would directly affect his perception strength, he did not rashly extend it to its limit.
Instead, following Viola’s warning, he deliberately suppressed the domain’s intensity to an extremely low level.
Then, manipulating the suppressed domain, he reached slowly toward the plane origin by way of the plane array.
