Bella is experiencing the difficult side effects of her pregnancy, including mood swings and severe nausea. Leo and Lina offer comfort and support, assuring her that the hardship is temporary. Meanwhile, Eli secretly begins documenting Bella's pregnancy, wanting to become an expert in caring for her. He observes her food preferences and aversions in a notebook, unbeknownst to the adults, until he suddenly disappears.

A few minutes later, he came back with a very serious expression on his little face.

He was carrying a small plate with both hands, walking carefully as though he were carrying something extremely precious.

Bella looked up in surprise.

"Eli?"

He carefully placed the plate in front of her.

"Mumma, I brought you food."

Bella blinked. "You did?"

He nodded proudly.

"I told Aunty Flora to make it."

Bella looked down at the plate. On it were a few crackers, some sliced apple and a small piece of plain toast. Simple things. Safe things that wouldn’t upset her stomach.

She looked back at Eli.

"Did you choose all of this yourself?"

Eli nodded again, his little chest puffing up. "I checked my book."

Bella tilted her head.

"Your book?"

Eli’s eyes widened. He immediately slapped both hands over his mouth.

Oops.

Bella raised an eyebrow.

"Eli... what book?"

He shook his head quickly.

"Nothing, Mumma. I didn’t say book."

"Eli."

"Nothing, Mumma," Eli said quickly.

Bella held out her hand.

"Show me."

Eli hesitated. He looked toward the hallway, then back at Bella, then toward the hallway again, as though considering whether he could make a run for it.

Then he sighed, his little shoulders slumping.

He disappeared for a moment and came back with a small, battered notebook clutched against his chest.

He handed it to Bella very reluctantly.

Bella opened it..Her breath caught.

Page after page was filled with Eli’s messy handwriting. Lists of foods. Little drawings of her favorite snacks. Notes about what made her sick. Some pages had small, careful marks beside certain items, and others had tiny hearts drawn in the corners.

On one page, in the middle of a list, Eli had written in large, uneven letters: MUMMA LIKES THIS. DO NOT GIVE HER THE OTHER THING.

Bella’s eyes grew shiny.

She looked at Eli.

He was standing in front of her with his hands clasped behind his back, shifting his weight from one foot to the other, clearly nervous.

"Do you like it?" he asked quietly.

Bella couldn’t speak for a moment.

She set the notebook down carefully and opened her arms.

Eli immediately climbed onto the couch and into her lap, careful and gentle like he was afraid of hurting her.

Bella wrapped her arms around him and pressed a kiss to the top of his head.

"I love it," she whispered. "I love it so much."

Eli relaxed against her, his little body melting into hers. "I’m taking care of you, Mumma."

Bella smiled, tears spilling down her cheeks.

"I know, baby. I know."

From that day on, Eli took his self-appointed job very seriously.

Every morning, he would check on Bella before anyone else. He would climb onto her bed and put his little hand on her forehead, checking for a fever, just like he had seen Lina do. He would ask her how she was feeling and if she said she was tired, he would immediately pull the blanket up to her chin and tell her to sleep.

If she said she was hungry, he would run to the kitchen and come back with whatever he had decided was safe for her that day.

Sometimes it was a banana.

Sometimes it was a handful of crackers.

Sometimes it was something completely random like a single grape or a piece of cheese that he had carefully cut himself with a butter knife, which he proudly presented to her with both hands.

Bella accepted all of it.

Even the grape. Even the slightly mangled cheese.

Because every single thing he brought her, he brought with so much love that she couldn’t possibly refuse.

One evening, Leo found them on the couch together.

Bella was lying down, her head resting on a pillow and Eli was sitting beside her, gently patting her arm. He was telling her a story about a dinosaur who couldn’t find his shoes and Bella was listening with her eyes half-closed, a small smile on her face.

Leo stood in the doorway and watched.

He felt his heart fill with warmth.

Eli noticed him first.

"Dada," he whispered, holding up one finger to his lips. "Mumma is sleeping."

Leo walked over quietly.

He looked down at Bella. Her eyes were closed, her breathing slow and even. She had fallen asleep in the middle of Eli’s story.

Eli looked up at Leo.

"I’m taking care of mumma."

Leo knelt down beside the couch. "I can see that."

Eli smiled proudly.

"I’m Big Champ."

Leo reached over and gently ruffled his hair.

"Yes," he said softly. "You are."

Eli beamed. Then he turned back to Bella and very carefully pulled the blanket up to her shoulders, tucking it around her the way he had seen Leo do a hundred times.

He patted her arm one last time. "Sleep well, Mumma."

Leo watched his son, with a smile.

Soon, Bella reached her second month of pregnancy, and it was time for her routine check-up. The morning of the appointment, she felt unusually nervous despite everyone repeatedly assuring her that there was no reason to worry. She sat quietly in the car beside Leo, one hand resting protectively over her still-flat stomach while her fingers kept moving restlessly over the fabric of her dress.

Leo noticed immediately.

"You’ve been quiet since morning," he said, glancing at her. His eyes swept over her face, reading every tiny line of tension.

Bella looked down at her stomach. "I’m just nervous."

"About what?"

She hesitated before answering softly, "What if the baby isn’t healthy?"

Leo’s expression softened. He reached over and gently covered her hand with his, his palm warm against her restless fingers.

"Don’t think like that."

"I know," Bella murmured, "but I can’t help it."

She had waited and hoped for this baby for so long that the happiness still felt almost unreal. Somewhere inside her, a tiny fear kept whispering that something might go wrong, that perhaps she would wake up and discover that this beautiful thing she had finally received was only another dream.
