"Leo!!"
Bella’s face lit up the moment she saw him. She looked like a child who had just seen her favorite person walk through the door. Moonbeam and Berry were still clutched tightly in her arms, pressed against her chest, their soft plush providing her comfort.
Leo walked toward her, his usual cold face softening as he reached the bed. He sat down beside her.
"Bunny, look," he said gently, gesturing toward the doorway. "Someone is here to see you."
Bella’s gaze followed his hand.
Her eyes landed on Miss J and William standing just inside the doorway. Miss J’s face was pale, her eyes red-rimmed, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. She looked like she hadn’t slept in days. William stood beside her, his expression calm.
Fear flickered across Bella’s face.
Her body stiffened. Her grip on Moonbeam and Berry tightened, her knuckles turning white as she pulled them closer to her chest. She instinctively leaned into Leo’s side, pressing herself against him as though trying to disappear into his warmth.
Her eyes darted between Miss J and William, uncertain and wary. She studied them like they were strangers who had wandered into her safe space.
Leo felt her tension immediately. He placed a gentle hand on her back, rubbing slow, soothing circles. His touch was warm, grounding.
"It’s okay," he murmured. "They’re friends. They’re here to see you."
Bella shook her head slowly, her eyes still fixed on the strangers.
"I... I don’t know them." Her voice was small, fragile like a child who had been woken from a nightmare. She looked up at Leo, her eyes wide and pleading. "Do I have to talk to them?"
William stepped forward slightly, his voice warm and gentle. "It’s alright, Bella. We don’t have to talk. We just wanted to see you. Make sure you were okay."
Bella stared at him for a long moment, her expression uncertain. Something about his voice seemed familiar but she couldn’t place it. It tugged at a memory just out of reach.
She looked at Miss J again. The woman had tears in her eyes, but she wasn’t crying. She was just standing there, looking at Bella with such tenderness that it made Bella’s heart tighten, even though she didn’t understand why.
Miss J finally spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. "You don’t have to say anything, sweetheart. I just wanted to see you."
Bella blinked. She didn’t respond. But she didn’t look away.

After seeing Bella’s discomfort, William and Miss J didn’t stay long.
They both understood that pushing too hard would only make her retreat further. Miss J’s heart ached as she looked at her daughter one last time—so close, yet so unreachable. Every instinct screamed at her to rush forward, to hold her, to never let go. But she held back.
"It’s alright," William said softly, placing a gentle hand on Miss J’s arm. "We’ll give her time."
Miss J nodded, her eyes still fixed on Bella, who had turned her face away, pressing her cheek against Leo’s shoulder. She was clutching Moonbeam so tightly her knuckles had gone white.
Leo escorted them to the door, his expression unreadable.
"She’s not ready," he said quietly. "But she didn’t scream or hide. That’s progress."
William nodded. "She recognized something, even if she didn’t know what. It’s a start."
Miss J wiped her eyes and forced a small smile. "I’ll wait as long as it takes."
Leo watched them leave before returning to Bella’s side.

Just like that, a few days passed.
Bella’s condition remained fragile, but there were small signs of improvement. She sometimes wandered to the window, her eyes distant, as though searching for something she couldn’t name. She still clung to Leo, still refused to eat unless he was beside her. But there were moments when she would look at him and smile and in those moments, everything felt almost normal.
One evening, after Bella had fallen asleep, his phone buzzed.
It was one of his men.
"Sir, Samuel’s condition isn’t good," the voice on the other end reported. "He’s asking for you. He wants to see you one last time."
Leo frowned, his gray eyes narrowing. Samuel had been kept in the basement of one of Leo’s secure properties, guarded around the clock. He had been fading for days, his body slowly giving out after everything that had happened.
"Alright," Leo said slowly. "I’ll come."
He hung up and looked at Bella’s sleeping form. She was curled around Moonbeam, her breathing soft and even, her face peaceful in the dim light. He gently brushed her hair back from her face.
"I’ll be back soon," he whispered.
Then he stood, grabbed his coat, and left the room.

When he arrived, he was led through the secure building and down a narrow staircase to the basement. The air was cool and still, lit by dim overhead lights that hummed softly. At the end of the corridor, a guard stood beside a heavy door.
Leo nodded, and the guard stepped aside.
He pushed open the heavy door.
The basement room was dim, lit by a single bare bulb hanging from the ceiling. The air was cold and still, carrying the faint scent of dust and iron. Shadows clung to the corners like forgotten secrets.
Samuel was tied to a chair in the center of the room.
His face was covered in blood—dried and fresh, streaks of red running down his cheeks and staining his collar. His lip was split, his eye swollen shut, his breathing shallow and ragged. He looked like he had been through hell.
And yet, the moment he saw Leo walk in... a faint smirk appeared on his battered lips.
Leo said casually as he pulled a chair across from Samuel and sat down. He crossed his legs, his posture relaxed, his gray eyes cold and unreadable. "Well... This is what happens when you stalk a married woman... and creep her out."
Samuel let out a weak, rattling laugh. It was a broken sound, like glass being crushed underfoot.
"You always did have a way with words, Moretti."
Leo tilted his head slightly. "I try."
Samuel’s smirk faded slowly, replaced by exhaustion. His eyes, barely able to stay open, fixed on Leo with a strange, distant look.
