Rockwell City
I looked toward the old man, standing with my arms crossed.
Old man Rock heard the question. He didn’t know whether it was okay to tell or not, but he decided to tell what he knew in the end.
"It’s just what I heard from a senior during the reign of the Covenant. They had absolute control over the wizard forces."
"Hardly anyone was equal to them," he added.
I raised my eyebrows.
"Then who defeated them?" I asked.
"The Covenant was later destroyed due to internal fighting," he added in a grave tone.
Hearing that, I understood where the fear came from. The Covenant was destroyed from within. No one had defeated them. It showed their true power.
"Okay," I said to the old man, signaling to him that he could leave.
The old man then returned to the room.
I stood there for a couple of seconds. I didn’t know whether anyone from the Magic Towers had uncovered the name. Was I the first one?
Then I thought of the zero puppet. It must be exploring the city right now and will return in the morning. Next, I went back to my room.
Post-Midnight
An old man appeared outside the hotel. He was none other than the Captain of the City Guard. Most people didn’t know his name; everyone called him by his title.
Only City Lord Robert and a few others knew that his name was Roger. Right now, Roger was donned in local clothes, standing on the opposite footpath.
His gaze was set on the towering hotel. He was looking at the hotel entrance without blinking, acting like a puppet.
The effect of the magic spell was fueling his desire for revenge. All he wanted was a fight between the visitors and the City Lord.
If the city were disturbed because of the visitors, then City Lord Robert would be forced to act.
Roger began to think of a plan, and a cruel idea came to mind. He looked at the hotel one last time before leaving the area.
Once he was gone, Amaira appeared at the spot, seeing that the City Guard Captain was acting upon influenced thoughts.
Her eyes flashed with a gleam. She had cast the magic spell, but she didn’t know its exact outcome. It could lead to anything.
She then followed him secretly.
Roger was a Supreme Wizard. He covered his face and entered one of the factories run by a local wizard family.
Amaira appeared silently. She saw the old man entering the factory, and her mouth curved into an arc. She and seven others had entered the city to cause trouble.
She had found a way, but she didn’t know what the others were doing right now. Everyone was going to create chaos in the city.
"Aaahhh!"
Not long after he entered the factory, a blood-curdling scream was heard. Amaira gathered her thoughts, went inside, and saw a chilling, bloody scene.
Roger was killing everyone using supreme-level mana pressure without even using a magic spell. Amaira watched the slaughter in silence.
After killing twenty workers, a cruel smile appeared on Roger’s face. He then left behind a bloody note:
[Masked Man]
He looked at the note with a cruel smile before leaving the place.
Amaira saw the note as well, and she understood everything.
"He plans to pin the blame on the masked man," she thought. Her work here was done.
She decided to target someone else; there was no need to follow the old man anymore. Amaira then left to find another target.
City Lord’s Office
Robert had gone home, so no one was in the office. The zero puppet, in the form of red smoke, was exploring the room.
It didn’t come across anything suspicious. Opening a drawer, the puppet found several books and notes.
It picked up the notes and books and began going through the information, finding details about the city and the Wizard Families.
It recorded all the information. The zero puppet then waited until morning.
Next, the zero puppet left the place.
Morning
The owner of the factory visited the site. But when he got there, he saw cold corpses lying on the ground.
The condition of the corpses was gruesome, they looked like a paste of blood. A terrifying smell covered the whole place.
The owner was stunned. He was a Wizard himself.
He hadn’t expected his workers to die. He quickly called the city officials, and it didn’t take long for them to reach the site.
They, too, were greeted by the gruesome scene.
The officials were shocked, but some senior members among them reached a conclusion with the help of their magic.
They discovered that the workers were killed by coercion, the sheer mana pressure had crushed them. It had to be the work of a Supreme Wizard.
Because they knew that if a Magic Lord or someone higher had used coercion, the entire factory would have been destroyed.
One of them noticed the marker and informed the others. Soon, everyone gathered in front of it:
[Masked Man]
The seniors’ expressions turned grave. They were afraid the murders would continue. They had a killer on the loose and a Supreme Wizard at that.
The city officials then informed the owner, who was shocked to the core. He knew nothing about this masked man.
The seniors then informed City Lord Robert directly. When he heard about the masked man, Robert thought of yesterday’s visitors.
Then, he shook his head. He knew their identities and believed the killer was someone else.
He then instructed them to release the news to the media.
Fifteen minutes later, news spread across the city. The death of the factory workers caused a massive commotion; no one expected anyone to dare commit murder in their city.
The murders were attributed to the masked man, and the note quickly gained notoriety.
Now, everyone knows about the masked man. The news channels continued broadcasting scenes from the crime site and the marker left on the ground.
