However, he wasn’t his biological son. Xue Yan had been adopted by Xue Dafu.
Since he was young, Xue Yan possessed a photographic memory, earning him renown as a child prodigy throughout the surrounding villages. The affluence of the Xue family was widely known in the neighboring villages, all thanks to Xue Yan.
Xue Yan was dispatched to the town for his studies at the tender age of four, making only infrequent visits home a few times annually.
The little girl he encountered was someone he had never met before.
“I’m not going,” Xue Yan replied, his voice tinged with a certain low tone. He cast his gaze downwards, fixated on the ground, before steadying the small bundle of firewood resting on his back. “Father, I wish to cultivate crops at home as well,” he added, his voice even softer.
“What’s so appealing about that when you could further your education!” Xue Dafu exclaimed with a heavy sigh. “I truly cannot comprehend your sudden decision to cease your studies. You are so bright; did someone suggest otherwise? Did a teacher utter such… Never mind. Forcing you to attend will not bring you happiness, nor will it bring your mother and me any peace. So be it; if you do not wish to go, then so be it.”
“Thank you, Father.” Xue Yan finally lifted his head, his eyes inadvertently meeting Jiang Yue’s at the mountain’s base.
Xue Yan was taken aback. Whose child could this be? She appeared so delicate and exquisite.
Jiang Yue quietly moved aside, allowing them passage.
It was at this juncture that Xue Dafu also noticed Jiang Yue.
“Jiang Yue, why are you here all by yourself?” Xue Dafu promptly set down the firewood from his shoulder and swiftly approached Jiang Yue. He crouched down before her, inquiring.
As he lowered himself, his line of sight now aligned with Jiang Yue’s.
“I intend to ascend the mountain,” Jiang Yue stated with a composed demeanor.
......
“What business do you have up there?” Xue Dafu expressed his lack of understanding. “Where are your uncle and aunt? How could they permit you to venture out alone? What sort of care have they provided? You are still a child.”
“My uncle’s family intended to sell me off. I had no desire to be sold, so I departed. My intention is to reside in the mountains by myself.”
Having articulated her words, she lifted the small bag she held, gesturing for Xue Dafu to examine it.
Only then did Xue Dafu notice the small bag in her grasp. His anger ignited instantly. “Those scoundrels! Your mother entrusted you to their care, and this is how they treated you! You truly plan to live alone in the mountains? You are still so young; how will you manage on your own? Even we adults would hesitate to spend a night there. Come, let us return, and I shall seek justice for you!”
With his declaration, Xue Dafu reached out to grasp Jiang Yue’s hand, intending to lead her back.
However, Jiang Yue deftly evaded his grasp, her eyes brimming with unwavering resolve. “I will not return. That family is wicked.”
After a brief pause, her tone softened slightly. “Do not concern yourself with me. I will not be returning to my uncle’s residence; simply act as if you never saw me. My thanks to you.”
Uttering this, Jiang Yue made to step around Xue Dafu and Xue Yan, continuing her ascent up the mountain.
Much like her, Xue Yan silently cleared a path for her.
Jiang Yue raised her eyebrows, not anticipating such cooperative and composed behavior from the other boy. He did not exhibit the typical demeanor of a seven-year-old child.
Nevertheless, she did not dwell on it and proceeded past the two individuals.
“How can this be? You are merely a child. Without an adult’s presence, you will be unable to survive, regardless of where you go!” Xue Dafu quickly moved to intercept her.
“How about this,” Xue Dafu began his attempt to persuade the young girl, “if you are unwilling to return to your uncle’s home, then come to my house instead! You will reside with us from this point onward, and we shall care for you as our own family, alright?”
