Xue Yan, a gifted child prodigy adopted by Xue Dafu, decides to stop his studies and stay home. He encounters Jiang Yue, a young girl fleeing her uncle's family who intended to sell her. Despite Xue Dafu's concern and offer to take her in, Jiang Yue insists on living alone in the mountains.

This was the first instance of kindness shown to her, and a warmth spread through Jiang Yue’s heart. However, she gently shook her head. “No, thank you. Your family is not wealthy, and I do not wish to become a burden to you.”

A burden?

Such a young child already possessed such understanding. Could she truly grasp the meaning of being a burden?

Xue Yan narrowed his eyes slightly.

“What burden? It’s merely an extra mouth to feed,” Xue Dafu declared without hesitation. “If you don’t return with me now, how can I live with myself? My conscience will be unsettled for the rest of my days. Come, let’s go back to my home.”

Xue Dafu, hunched like a duck, began to usher her along with his large hands.

Jiang Yue found herself speechless.

“Xue Yan,” Xue Dafu called out to his son as he continued to guide Jiang Yue, “why are you just standing there? Come and escort your sister back. You can leave the firewood; just hold her hand. It’s difficult to navigate the fields while carrying your sister on your back with the firewood as well.”

He had a new sister?

Xue Yan felt a sense of helplessness but, knowing his father’s resolute nature, did not set down the firewood. Instead, he shifted the bundle and, without immediately taking Jiang Yue’s hand, calmly inquired, “Father, to which family does she belong?”

“She is from a neighboring village. You’ve never met her, but your mother and I have seen her on numerous occasions,” Xue Dafu responded without missing a beat.

The young boy appeared taken aback.

From his recollection, wasn’t the little girl supposed to have passed away from illness?

......

Xue Yan couldn’t resist glancing at Jiang Yue, his eyes narrowed.

Jiang Yue furrowed her brow. What was with this boy? Why did he seem as though he was onto something?

As if he hadn’t noticed her displeasure, Xue Yan calmly averted his gaze and said to his father, “Then her surname must be Jiang. I’ve heard that person is quite difficult to deal with, and no one in that family is particularly pleasant. If you intend to bring her home, it would be best to sever all ties with her family first and perhaps formalize it with a contract. That way, it will be a clean break.”

Jiang Yue pondered his words deeply. Was he truly only seven years old? Some adults might not possess such foresight.

Could he be a prodigy?

Or perhaps… Was he like her? Did the soul within him actually belong to an adult? Yes, that was it, didn’t this person suddenly stop his studies in town… The possibility was quite high…

Xue Yan sensed Jiang Yue’s attention and her feeling that something was amiss with him, but he remained steadfast.

“A contract…” Xue Dafu seemed troubled. “While that is ideal, why would someone from the Jiang family be willing to relinquish their claim on Jiang Yue…”

“Here.” Jiang Yue suddenly produced a piece of paper and handed it to his father.

“What is this?”

“The contract,” Jiang Yue replied.

Xue Yan was astounded.

Instantly, he formed a hypothesis about what might have transpired. This person might have been reborn. In any case, she was undoubtedly not the original Jiang Yue.

Xue Yan felt a sense of kinship, as if they were on the same side, and looked at Jiang Yue with anticipation.

Jiang Yue allowed Xue Yan to meet her gaze.

She felt no apprehension. She had carefully considered her options. She couldn’t remain in the mountains forever, so taking this chance to go home with a good man like Xue Dafu seemed like the best course of action.

She was determined to repay Xue Dafu’s kindness in the future.

“Breaking the contract? That’s wonderful!” Xue Dafu snatched the paper, unable to contain his elation. “This is fantastic news! Jiang Yue, how did you obtain this document?” His eyes remained fixed on the disownment contract, though he couldn’t decipher a single character.

“I requested it from my uncle, and he provided it to me,” Jiang Yue explained.
