Endless Debt Chapter 1537 - 74: Renowned and Famous (Part 2)
Previously on Endless Debt...
"Don’t be so anxious, take it step by step, and you’ll find the answer sooner or later," Hinda comforted, "You’ve done your best, Bologue, it’s time to take a break."
Bologue was a bit surprised, "You know my name."
"Of course, Bologue, who slaughtered through the High Tower, you’re quite famous now."
Bologue stood there in shock, while Hinda didn’t notice this at all and politely clapped his hands.
...
After a few days of brief residence, the situation of the All Secrets Order stabilized, and Holt led his team to continue stationing there, while Bologue and Palmer returned first, enjoying a short vacation.
Standing in front of the temporarily constructed Curved Path Gate, Bologue gulped down the medicine to avoid the discomfort brought by long-distance Curved Path Shuttling.
Logically speaking, going home on vacation should be a joyful thing, but now Bologue wasn’t too happy, the annoying noise beside him was unending.
"How does it feel, the famous Bologue."
Palmer’s expression was exaggeratedly elated, asking while nudging Bologue with his elbow, looking cheeky.
"Shut up."
Bologue said weakly, exhaustion written all over his face.
At this moment, an employee passing by not far away noticed Bologue and excitedly waved at him, and Bologue could only muster a tired smile to respond.
The night Bologue slaughtered through the High Tower, the intelligence of the fall of the Land of Secrets and the complete annihilation of the Ancestral Council was disseminated far and wide. Every force was shocked by the Order Bureau’s lightning attack, afraid that they would be the next target. For a moment, the world was unexpectedly calm and peaceful.
In this calmness, uneasy forces were scrambling to dig deeper for intelligence, trying to figure out what exactly happened that day inside the Land of Secrets...
Bologue never doubted the Order Bureau’s ability to seal intelligence, but this time, the intelligence of that day wasn’t hidden but was intentionally diluted and blurred, passed among the forces. Bologue guessed it might be the Order Bureau deliberately releasing the intelligence to intimidate other forces, announcing its might.
Within this diluted intelligence, the Order Bureau revealed the existence of Holt, a very young Seeker of Glory. In the eyes of many forces, he would take over Nesanel’s duties, become the Minister of External Affairs, and continue to be a very formidable threat that suppresses other forces.
Holt was already a Seeker of Glory, an unchangeable fact. Therefore, compared to Holt, what truly made others feel threatened was the second person in the intelligence, Bologue Lazarus.
Bologue bore many titles, the most noteworthy of which was his identity as an Undead.
An Undead at the Defender stage played a key role in conquering the Land of Secrets. Once Bologue ascended to the Seeker of Glory, he would be an even more troublesome presence than Holt. Moreover, with the long lifespan of an Undead, even before the Alchemy Matrix was completely surpassed by time, Bologue would exert an insurmountable pressure on all forces.
The news kept spreading, the Order Bureau didn’t try to control it, as if intentionally creating a god, Bologue’s fame kept growing, originally renowned only within the Field Operations Department, now famous throughout the entire Order Bureau and many forces.
Just a day before, when he happened to encounter Holt, Holt teased Bologue, "I thought that after becoming a Seeker of Glory, I would be highly anticipated, but in front of you, my glorious moments are as fleeting as a meteor."
All Bologue could do was smile awkwardly; he didn’t care about fame at all. On the contrary, Bologue very much disliked fame because it would affect his work, as from now on, all enemies would be doubly vigilant against him.
"Enjoy this honor, Bologue, it’s what you deserve and what’s necessary."
After the smile, Holt spoke with some seriousness, "War is coming, we need a flag to rally our morale and spirit."
Bologue belatedly realized something.
"No one can guarantee who will survive the coming war, not even I, as a Seeker of Glory, can promise these things. My, Nesanel’s, and any high-ranking member’s death would be a significant blow to the Order Bureau itself, but you’re different, Bologue, you’re an Undead, you won’t fall no matter what."
Holt explained with deep meaning to Bologue, "You will be the best choice for a flag."
"Famous, huh?"
Bologue broke free from his memories, muttering to himself.
"Yes, famous," Palmer repeated beside him, curiously asking, "How does it feel being in the limelight? Do you feel light as a feather?"
"No, only heavy, as if carrying others’ expectations on my shoulders, making it hard to breathe,"
Thinking about this, Bologue felt exhausted, which is why, despite defeating strong enemies and welcoming the holiday, Bologue couldn’t quite enjoy it.
"Regarding that, I really have a hard time empathizing," Palmer waved his hand, "You know me, I never get involve with such things."
Bologue listened and chuckled. As a Negative Power User, Fuen’s son, and the Clarks’ heir, Palmer should be just as famous and anticipated as Bologue, yet this guy lived his life like a performance filled with comedic effects.
"Palmer, have you ever envied this feeling? Craved for such fame?" Bologue asked.
"No, I’ve said it before, I’m not very ambitious, it’s hard for me to be obsessed with such things. To put it negatively, I’m just a half-baked guy, can’t muster enthusiasm for anything."
Palmer evaluated himself without reservation, "I’m just relatively fortunate, that’s all."
"Fortunate? In what sense?"
Bologue laughed a little; this unlucky guy, Palmer rarely spoke of "being fortunate".
"Fortunate to be Fuen’s child, to inherit a big family this way. Unfortunately, I’m indeed very easily satisfied, given so much wealth and material resources, I just leave them aside."
Palmer took the medicine to avoid making a scene again, "I sometimes fantasize, if I were born into a normal family, what kind of life would I lead."
"What would it be like?"
"Not much different," Palmer emphasized, "pretty much the same as now. I’d probably still fill cabinets with tapes, plaster band posters on walls, lounge on the sofa everyday, eating pizza, watching strange films... The only difference might be work. From the Conder’s fights and battles to simplistic, peaceful life."
Palmer said helplessly, "It’s quite disappointing, not much ambition."
Bologue shook his head, "Not at all, Palmer, you’re just very easy to satisfy. There’s nothing wrong with a simple life, most people live like this, performers on stage are the minority, while most are just the audience."
Being easy to satisfy isn’t a bad thing, similarly as a Debtor, Bologue navigates among various Devils, resisting temptations, being wary of schemes, whereas Palmer is different, he doesn’t care about any of those things.
Since becoming a Debtor, Palmer hardly ever interacted with Devils; maybe the Devils are even lazy to bother with this unambitious guy, feeling it’s a complete waste of time to tempt him.
"It’s different, Bologue, I was fortunate to become Fuen’s son, enjoying extravagant treatment, but everything comes with a price. You could also understand it as, unfortunately, becoming Fuen’s son, even without ambition, I have to fight for my family, for my position."
Palmer rubbed his face hard, smiling bitterly, "I’m already trying hard to muster interest in work."
"Enough talk, let’s go home first. I heard from them that the living room has been renovated, we can move back."
Bologue picked up his luggage, containing some specialties from the Land of Secrets, ornate and flashy crafts and ornaments. These were gifts for Aimou.
Palmer grunted softly, muttering, "I wonder how Nesanel is doing."
After the battle ended, Nesanel was urgently sent back to the Border Sanatorium for treatment, his condition is still unclear. Hence, Bologue plans to visit Nesanel after returning to Oath City, Opus.
"Are you guys planning to leave?"
Just as Bologue was about to pass through the Curved Path Gate, a familiar voice interrupted his action.
"I’m going with you."
Olivia, carrying luggage, still veiled in that layer of mysterious black gauze.
