Devouring Evolution: I Reborn as an Arctic Wolf Chapter 2: Chapter 2: Astonishing Growth.
Previously on Devouring Evolution: I Reborn as an Arctic Wolf...
While nursing on the Arctic Wolf Mother's milk, Su Lin succumbed to the heaviness of his eyelids and drifted into slumber, the system's notifications still echoing in his mind.
Drowsiness is a natural trait shared by all mammalian infants.
Whether it be human babies or Arctic Wolf cubs, this characteristic is prominently displayed.
....
A month later, within the den.
"Awoo!"
A high-pitched, soft growl reached Su Lin's ears.
Blinking a pair of bewildered yet charming eyes, a small figure stared at Su Lin in utter shock.
This was none other than Wolf Sister.
Born almost immediately after Su Lin, she was his closest sibling in age.
She never imagined that her brother, who started out at her size, would undergo such a rapid transformation.
He was now several times larger than her.
Su Lin, who had been lost in thought while observing the frozen world outside the cave, simply turned his head at her exclamation and gave Wolf Sister’s head an affectionate pat with his paw.
He was perfectly aware of the confusion and awe swirling in Wolf Sister's mind.
It wasn't just her; Wolf Dad, Wolf Mom, and the other members of the Wolf Clan were equally baffled by him.
Had Su Lin not been raised right before their eyes this past month, they would have suspected him of being an intruder from another pack.
Su Lin's physical development over the last thirty days had been nothing short of monstrous.
Naturally, the influence of those ten vials of Potential Potion played a massive role in this growth.
By the third day of his reincarnation, Su Lin was already agile enough to run and leap.
By day ten, he had transitioned from milk to the fresh kills brought home by Wolf Dad.
By the twentieth day, his size had surpassed Wolf Sister and even eclipsed the half-year-old cousin from the Wolf Uncle’s lineage.
Now, at the thirty-day mark, Su Lin possessed the stature of a one-year-old male Arctic Wolf.
Name: Su Lin.
Species: Arctic Wolf.
Level: 3. (80 Evolution Points required for the next rank.)
Vitality Value: 300.
Endurance: 30.
Strength: 30.
Defense: 30.
Speed: 60.
Evolution Points: 8.
In just one month, Su Lin had reached level 3.
Unlike the uneven stats of Wolf Dad and Wolf Mom, Su Lin’s attributes were perfectly balanced.
Every time he leveled up, the system distributed 10 points to each of his core attributes.
His Vitality Value also saw a boost of 100 points per level.
Furthermore, he gained an additional 10 freely distributable attribute points each time.
This was clearly a side effect of the Potential Potion, which had tapped into his hidden reserves.
One should not dismiss these 10 extra points; they ensured that at the same level, his raw power was at least twenty percent higher than any rival!
Yet, that wasn't the most formidable part of his progression.
The true advantage lay in the fact that these points could be assigned however he pleased!
Su Lin had poured every extra point into his speed.
Currently, his swiftness far exceeded that of his peers, reaching a point where even Wolf Mom could no longer keep pace with him.
In this world, speed is the ultimate weapon!
Su Lin believed that as long as he was fast enough, he could escape even if he couldn't win a fight.
Suddenly, the deep, vibrating roar of a male Arctic Wolf shattered his train of thought.
Su Lin shifted his gaze toward Wolf Dad.
The command had come from him.
Through weeks of careful listening and living within the pack, he had decoded the basic language of the Wolf Clan.
This particular low-frequency growl indicated that Wolf Dad was summoning the hunters.
Su Lin heard this call daily.
Wolf Dad and Wolf Mom were relentless in their search for food.
However, the brutal Arctic climate and the lack of prey meant their hunts often yielded very little.
The pack didn't dare challenge the massive beasts of the tundra like Polar Bears, Musk Oxen, or Grizzly Bears.
Engaging such giants usually led to devastating casualties within the pack.
Targeting them was a desperate measure of last resort.
Because hunting was becoming increasingly difficult, even Wolf Mom—who usually stayed behind to guard the litter—joined the hunting party this time.
Before departing, Wolf Mom gently nuzzled Su Lin and Wolf Sister.
She let out two soft howls, telling Su Lin to watch over his sister before she vanished into the snow.
Wolf Dad, meanwhile, left instructions for the Cousin who remained behind.
This half-year-old Cousin acted as the older sister to the younger cubs. Having given her his orders, Wolf Dad felt confident enough to lead the pack out.
Every one of the eight adult Arctic Wolves in the den was mobilized for this hunt.
Hopefully, they would return with a bountiful catch.
Only five cubs were left in the safety of the cave.
Among them, besides Su Lin, was a solitary little wolf who kept to himself.
This lone wolf was an orphan, found by Wolf Dad and Wolf Mom during a previous excursion.
Out of a sense of kinship or perhaps pity, they had adopted him into the family.
Though only three months old, he was nearly as large as the six-month-old Cousin.
His growth was impressive.
He clearly had the potential to become a Lead Wolf one day, though he still paled in comparison to Su Lin.
With the adults gone, Su Lin pondered his situation and decided it was time to hunt for himself.
His appetite was growing rapidly, already exceeding the requirements of a full-grown wolf.
Wolf Dad and Wolf Mom were visibly thinning from the stress of hunting and providing for the young.
They were clearly sacrificing their own portions to ensure he and Wolf Sister were fed.
Su Lin felt it was his duty to lighten their load.
Furthermore, the "Devouring Evolution" system demanded that he leave the nest to fight and kill.
He couldn't reach his full potential by hiding in a cave and living off handouts.
Without a second thought, Su Lin prepared to move.
He signaled his intent to Wolf Sister and the Cousin with a sharp howl.
"Awooo!"
The Cousin howled back in protest, attempting to block his path.
Ignoring her, Su Lin brushed past and exited the den, leaving behind a worried Wolf Sister and a frustrated Cousin.
...
The Arctic is a realm defined by eternal frost and relentless winters.
Temperatures here frequently drop to fifty degrees below zero.
It is a lethal environment.
Even with his thick Arctic Wolf fur, Su Lin felt the biting sting of the winter air the moment he stepped outside.
"Extreme cold detected, Vitality Value -1!"
"The freezing environment doubles the rate of Physical Strength depletion; please manage your energy carefully."
The system's mechanical voice rang in his head.
This warning reminded Su Lin that his time in the open would be limited.
"Hiss!"
Drawing in a sharp breath of the frigid Arctic air, he began to distance himself from the cave, one step at a time.
