Clumsy Beast, Keep Your Paws Off Chapter 892: A Golden Opportunity Falls Into Her Lap
Previously on Clumsy Beast, Keep Your Paws Off...
Unlike Hu Yan, Lin Muyu, and Bai Ling, who were completely flustered by the enormous group of sub-beastmen in front of them, Su Qinglan was practically glowing with excitement.
She had been waiting for an opportunity like this for a long time!
Now, look at what has happened. She had barely helped one sub-beastman, and a whole group had come knocking on her door!
Wasn’t this exactly what she needed?
Su Qinglan almost wanted to clap her hands in happiness.
After all, she had many plans for Dragon Beast City, and those plans required a lot of people. The beastmen in the city were strong, but their numbers were limited. Most of them preferred hunting, protecting their families, or doing work that suited their strength. It was impossible to expect a few beastmen to handle everything she wanted to accomplish.
If she could recruit these sub-beastmen, things would become much easier.
They could help with farming, gathering fruits, tending crops, preparing food, and many other tasks. Once they learned the work, they could even take over some of the jobs that kept the stronger beastmen occupied.
Her plans had never been small. If she wanted to turn Dragon Beast City into a truly prosperous place, she would need more hands!
However, Su Qinglan quickly suppressed her excitement.
She could not let these people see how happy she was.
After all, she knew nothing about them. What if some of them were lazy, greedy, or had ulterior motives? What if they caused trouble after entering the city?
She could not simply accept everyone without thinking carefully.
So, while her heart was practically blooming with joy, Su Qinglan deliberately furrowed her brows and put on a troubled expression.
Hu Yan glanced at her.
’Why does Lanlan look so worried?’
He looked at the large group again, then back at his female.
Was she really that troubled by a group of sub-beastmen asking for work?
Lin Muyu and Bai Ling were also watching Su Qinglan closely, waiting to see what she would do.
Su Qinglan cleared her throat.
"First, let me ask you something. Where are you all living right now?"
The moment she asked this question, the entire group became nervous. They exchanged hesitant glances before an elderly sub-beastman finally stepped forward.
"Female master, we... we’re living in this forest."
"In the forest?" Su Qinglan raised her eyebrows. "Do you have caves to stay in?"
The old man shook his head awkwardly.
"Some of us have found small holes between rocks, but most of us don’t have proper caves. We hide wherever we can."
"Then how have you survived until now?"
The old man lowered his head. "We... we find food in the forest."
Another sub-beastman hurriedly added, "We don’t dare to stay in one place for too long. The forest around Dragon Beast City belongs to the people of the city. If the beastmen find us, they chase us away."
A young female tightened her hold on the child beside her.
"We’ve been chased away so many times that we learned to hide very well. Even when beastmen come hunting, they rarely find us now."
Lin Muyu stared at them in disbelief.
"Wait a minute. You’ve been hiding in this forest all this time? Right behind the city?"
"Yes," the female answered timidly.
"And the beastmen don’t know?"
"We try not to let them find us."
Lin Muyu was speechless.
She had lived in Dragon Beast City for so long, yet she had never realized that so many sub-beastmen were hiding right behind the city walls.
She turned toward Su Qinglan. "Lanlan, how many people are there in this group?"
Su Qinglan glanced around.
"Quite a lot."
"That’s not what I meant!" Lin Muyu lowered her voice. "There are so many of them, and they’ve been hiding here all this time. How did nobody notice?"
The elderly sub-beastman looked embarrassed.
"We’re weak, and we’re good at hiding. We don’t dare to make trouble or approach the city too often. If we can find enough food, we stay quiet."
Hu Yan frowned.
"How weak are you?"
The old man hesitated before answering, "Most of us can barely fight ordinary wild beasts. We can catch small animals, but anything larger is dangerous for us."
"Then what do you eat?" Bai Ling asked.
"Whatever we can find. Sometimes small beasts, sometimes fruits, and sometimes wild vegetables."
A young man gave a bitter smile.
"But there aren’t many fruits or vegetables that we recognize. We know a few kinds, but we don’t dare to eat anything unfamiliar. We’re afraid of getting poisoned."
"That’s right!" another female quickly said. "Sometimes we find plenty of fruit, but we don’t know whether it’s safe to eat. We can only leave it alone."
Su Qinglan nodded thoughtfully.
That was understandable. Even ordinary beastmen could make mistakes when identifying unfamiliar plants. For sub-beastmen, who had fewer opportunities to learn about the forest and less strength to defend themselves, the danger was even greater.
"And what about meat?" she asked.
The group fell silent.
After a while, a thin sub-beastman answered, "We can only catch small beasts. Even then, we can’t always catch enough. There are many mouths to feed, and sometimes the food we find isn’t enough for everyone."
A little boy standing behind his mother suddenly tugged at her clothes.
"Mother, I’m hungry."
The female’s face immediately turned red with embarrassment. She bent down and whispered, "Be good. We’ll eat when we get back."
"But we don’t have anything to eat..."
"Be good," she repeated, her voice trembling slightly.
Su Qinglan’s expression softened. She had not expected their situation to be this difficult.
Then another female suddenly looked up at her with hopeful eyes. "Female master, we heard that there’s a stall outside the city gate where people sell cooked food."
Su Qinglan looked at her in surprise.
"Cooked food?"
"Yes!" The female nodded quickly. "We heard that people can buy food that’s already been cooked. They don’t need to gather everything themselves or spend so much time preparing it."
She swallowed nervously before continuing.
"We’ve never tried it. We don’t have enough food or beast hide to buy it. But we heard that the food is delicious, and we wondered what it would be like to eat something like that."
