Lin Muyu was even more shocked.
’Is Lanlan out of her mind?’
She stared at Su Qinglan’s back, almost wanting to grab her shoulders and shake some sense into her.
’We’re talking about a few sub-beastmen! Why would you go so far for them? You’d actually leave the city you’ve worked so hard to improve just because the others refused to accept them?’
Lin Muyu could not understand it.
However, when she thought about Su Qinglan’s position, she slowly calmed down.
Even if some beastmen dared to oppose her decision, would they really dare to drive her away?
Su Qinglan was not only the daughter of the City Lord’s mate but also the most respected witch doctor in Dragon Beast City. Many beastmen depended on her to treat their illnesses, and even the most stubborn ones knew how valuable she was to the city.
If she truly decided to leave, how many people would dare to stand against her?
And if she actually left, who would treat their sick cubs and females?
Lin Muyu’s lips twitched.
’No wonder she’s so confident. She’s not even afraid of leaving!’
Bai Ling also looked at Su Qinglan with complicated eyes. She had never expected Su Qinglan to be willing to take such a step for a group of strangers.
Hu Yan, however, had already recovered. He stepped closer to Su Qinglan and said firmly, "If you leave, I’ll go with you."
Su Qinglan turned to look at him.
Hu Yan raised his chin. "Why are you looking at me? Wherever you go, I’ll go. Do you think I’d stay here alone?"
A faint smile appeared on Su Qinglan’s face. "Who said you could stay behind?"
Hu Yan immediately grinned. "That’s more like it!"
Lin Muyu looked at the two of them and rolled her eyes.
’Wonderful. One has decided to leave the city, and the other has already packed his bags in his heart!’
She was about to say something when suddenly, a rustling sound came from the bushes beside the path.
Hu Yan’s expression changed at once. He immediately stepped in front of Su Qinglan, his sharp eyes sweeping across the bushes.
"Who’s there?"
Bai Ling also became alert, while Lin Muyu frowned and moved closer to them.
Hu Yan had sensed someone nearby earlier, but since there was no threatening aura, he had not paid much attention. He had assumed that some small beasts were hiding in the bushes.
Who would have thought that so many people were hiding there?
The bushes shook violently.
Then, a large group of figures rushed out.
There were men and women, young and old. Some were holding children, while others supported elderly people. Their clothes were worn, and their bodies were thin. Most of them were noticeably smaller than ordinary beastmen, with ears, tails, or other animal features that they could not fully conceal.
Even their auras were extremely weak. One glance was enough for Hu Yan to recognize them.
They were sub-beastmen! And there were so many of them that the path was almost blocked.
Hu Yan’s brow twitched. ’How many people were hiding in those bushes?’
Before he could figure it out, the entire group suddenly dropped to their knees.
"Female master, please take us in!"
"Please, we beg you! We’ll work hard!"
"We can do anything you ask. We don’t need a good house. We don’t even need to live inside the city!"
"Please give us a chance!"
The cries came one after another, and the scene quickly became chaotic.
Su Qinglan was completely stunned.
"What are you doing? Get up first!"
But no one moved.
An elderly sub-beastman pressed his forehead against the ground and pleaded, "Female master, we only need enough food to survive. We can live outside the city walls. We won’t trouble the beastmen inside!"
"That’s right!" another man hurriedly added. "We can gather firewood, hunt small beasts, grow vegetables, or do any work you give us. Please don’t send us away!"
A young female held her child tightly against her chest, her eyes full of desperation.
"My cub hasn’t eaten properly for two days. I don’t want much. I only want him to have enough food to grow up."
"Please, female master!"
"Please take pity on us!"
Su Qinglan’s expression changed as she listened to their pleas.
She had known that sub-beastmen had a difficult time surviving, but she had not expected so many of them to be living in such terrible conditions outside Dragon Beast City.
And from the way they were begging, it was clear that they had not come here by accident.
They had been waiting for her.
But why?
Before Su Qinglan could ask, one of Rao’s females suddenly hurried forward. She had just come out of the cave and was shocked to see the enormous group kneeling in front of them.
"What are you doing here?!" Her voice trembled with anxiety. She quickly rushed toward the group and tried to make them stand up.
"Get up! All of you, get up! Why are you doing this?"
One of the sub-beastwomen looked at her with tears in her eyes.
"Sister, we heard that the City Lord’s wife was coming to help you. We only wanted to ask her for help, too!"
The female’s face turned pale. "I already told you to leave! Didn’t I tell you not to come here and disturb Sister Qinglan?"
"But we have nowhere else to go!"
An old sub-beastman raised his head, tears running down his weathered face.
"We’ve tried everywhere. Nobody wants to hire us, and nobody will let us live near their settlements. Some of us haven’t eaten properly for days. If we don’t ask now, when will we ever get another chance?"
The female opened her mouth but could not find an answer.
Another sub-beastwoman clutched her child’s hand and cried, "Sister, we’re not asking for houses. We don’t dare to dream of living inside the city. We only want a little work so we can feed our families!"
"That’s enough!" Rao’s female cried anxiously. "You don’t understand. Don’t make things difficult for her!"
"We’re not trying to make things difficult for her!"
A young sub-beastman hurriedly shook his head.
"We know our place. We won’t enter the city without permission. We won’t fight with the beastmen for houses. We only want some food!"
His words made the entire group fall silent for a moment. Then someone whispered, "Please, female master. Even if you only give us enough food to survive, we’ll be grateful."
Su Qinglan looked at the kneeling figures, then at Rao’s female, who was standing in front of them with a worried expression.
She finally understood.
These sub-beastmen had heard that she was willing to help Rao’s family. Afraid that they might lose this rare opportunity, they had gathered here and waited for her, hoping that she would offer them a way to survive as well.
They were so afraid of being rejected that they were not even asking for a place inside the city.
They were willing to remain outside the walls. They only wanted food and work.
Su Qinglan’s gaze slowly swept over the crowd. She saw the thin children hiding behind their parents, the elderly people whose backs were bent, and the females who looked as though they could barely stand.
"All right," she said. "First, everyone stand up. I can’t properly talk to you while you’re all kneeling on the ground."
